alice9263 · 18/11/2023 15:40

My local supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, LIDL has got no strawberries for about 2-3 weeks now. M&S has got a small bit.!" Googled a bit and didn't see any news on shortage... asking cause I bake a lot using strawberries

I posted too soon. My husband eats loads of strawberries and I've never had a problem buying them in big supermarkets at any time of year before now.

Read the link.

Changed weather patterns affected the growing season across Europe, and there are shortages everywhere.

And with the changes to the climate, those altered weather patterns are very likely to be the new normal. So the seasonality of produce may in turn be altered (especially the extended seasons) and so we need to get used to the idea that not everything will always be available

Or bubble wrap.... it's nowhere to be seen ANYWHERE

WTF? Strawberries are in season in June. It's November. Duh.

itsmyp4rty · 18/11/2023 21:33

There was no broccoli or cauliflower in Waitrose today, half the shelves in the fruit and veg section were empty. Strawberries I get at this time of year, but broccoli and cauliflower??

Yea, I realise the British strawberry season has ended but you can usually buy Egyptian, Jordanian, and Moroccan strawberries in the winter months.

A lot of green veg has been absolutely hammered by the constant wet weather. I did pick up some weirdly small but quite tasty broccoli in my Sainsbury's local, a couple of days ago, though.

I would say we need to get used to eating cabbage and root veg in winter but the last cabbage I bought was almost as baggy and insubstantial as they were back in the spring.

Jk987 · 18/11/2023 22:46

It's Autumn. Pick seasonal fruits for your baking.

PuppyMonkey · 18/11/2023 23:05

I don’t think anyone has mentioned it being November and thus not strawberry season so I thought I’d post this in order to make OP aware.Grin

Use a big red wine gum for the Santa hat instead?

It is funny how nobody thought to mention that, isn't it?

alice9263 · 19/11/2023 11:07

Tbh I have not experienced this for the past 7 years. This is the first time I need to turn down some requests on the snow man cakes 😂

I love your panda cakes particularly! I would buy those. They're all impressive though.

Blatantly touting for business.

My mum gets in a huff about berries outside summer, yet buys bananas, grapes and avocados year-round - make it make sense!!

Oh my goodness, my mummy is EXACTLY the same... Happily fills her fridge with fruit and veg that literally cost the earth while with no sense of irony banging about seasonal produce and food miles...

Tronkmanton · 19/11/2023 20:58

I work for a Lincolnshire farming company that grow strawberries nearly all year round in a glasshouse heated sustainably. It is usually possible to buy British strawberries all year round. However, the UK & European (indoor) strawberry crops have recently been badly affected by the mild nights and generally overcast weather leading to fungus & mushy fruit not meeting quality standards. That would probably explain the lack of availability.

Tesco also has a broccoli shortage which is very unhelpful.

Aah! Not just me then.

StillWantingADog · 19/11/2023 21:15

It’s November. Yes you can buy some this time of year but they’re usually shit

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/11/2023 21:17

Back in the 1980s my best friend's birthday was at the end of December, and we had to go to Harrods' food hall to get strawberries for her birthday. (We lived in London anyway, but usually shopped less extravagantly).

Bippertyboppertyboob · 18/11/2023 18:38

If you go to your local greengrocers, they will be able to order stock from their wholesalers for you, but it will be expensive.

@Bippertyboppertyboob

local & greengrocers ?!?!

no such creature near me. Nearest thing is a 'farm shop' which looks lovely but charges like a wounded bull - £4 for a small cauliflower. As much as I'd like to I can't afford to shop there.

massive mark up on products readily available at the supermarket too.

Cathyt90 · 21/11/2023 19:55

Imported raspberries and strawberries are not usually flown in, they come in lorries typically from Spain, Egypt, Morocco and the Netherlands. Blueberries and blackberries are flown in this time of year, typically from South America. A lot of Dutch strawberry growers have stopped growing because of the high energy costs contributing to the recent shortage. The British growing season was also shorter this year because of energy costs and there was a lag before imports could make up the slack.

Nicthechick · 25/11/2023 07:44

I have just read this thread as I too was interested In knowing why there are no strawberries in the supermarkets recently (regardless of what most of you say there always has been on previous years) but can I just say I think it’s totally unnecessary for so many of you to be so unkind in response to the poster’s question. Yes it’s November but she was only querying why this November was different as she had always been able to buy them for her cakes in the past. And as for accusing her of using it to advertise her cakes that is also unnecessary…people were asking her what she was making that even needed strawberries so she showed the picture!! No need for countless numbers of you to repeat what you were saying just so you could jump on the bandwagon of being unkind and so judgmental of this poor lady who basically just asked an honest question.

luckylavender · 25/11/2023 08:19

sixteenfurryfeet · 18/11/2023 16:22

No strawberries in November?

Good. Better for the planet if there aren't.

We do not need to force seasonal fruit to grow in a hothouse somewhere so it can be transported hundreds, if not thousands of miles to get here. Ridiculous carbon footprint.

My thoughts exactly

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 18/11/2023 15:43

It's November.

This!! People need to learn to eat seasonally.

I never buy strawberries this time of year even if I do see them as they’re often flown in from Africa. I then only buy British strawberries in the summer.
