My local supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, LIDL has got no strawberries for about 2-3 weeks now. M&S has got a small bit.!" Googled a bit and didn't see any news on shortage... asking cause I bake a lot using strawberries

Well, they look lovely, but would it be possible to use a substitute or frozen fruit? Strawberries, even if grown in poly tunnels, don’t taste of much at this time of year.

alice9263 · 18/11/2023 16:32

maybe I will use fondant figurine instead for this year 😂

You keep showing the same pic, but it won't change the fact that beard or no beards, November strawberries taste like crap!

This is a complete guess on my part but it might be something to do with the high cost of fuel now. Strawberries are naturally a summer fruit and need heat to grow so to get them now is going to mean using fuel for heat. My guess is that it is not economic to grow them out of season.

Itsbritneybitch22 · 18/11/2023 16:35

@FuckingHellAdele

Op does .. for baking as she said in her post that you’re replying to.

As others have said, British strawberry season has pretty much ended so most strawberries available in the supermarkets will be imported from warmer countries like Spain or Egypt, which will be more expensive, not taste as good & maybe affected by Brexit/import issues; adverse weather, transport issues etc.
I'd suggest you look at alternative decorations for your cupcakes in future so you aren't so reliant on one out of season fruit.

horseymum · 18/11/2023 16:39

I'm glad they're not. They don't travel well so best kept for British summer time. I buy bananas etc when British fruit (mostly strawberries, apples) are out of season. I'd love to buy more seasonally but I'd not eat much fruit in the winter! Oranges etc must travel well too.

Some supermarkets still sell strawberries. Lidle does anyway

Not mine. None for the last couple of weeks but I accept this as it's winter 00

Pack it in. It's November

MintJulia · 18/11/2023 16:41

Fresh strawberries will be completely tasteless this time of year.

Can't you use frozen ones for cooking? At least they'll have some taste.

TheWizardHowl · 18/11/2023 16:47

Quite an interesting advertising technique OP. Do I DM you for orders?🤔

Exactly what I was thinking!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 18/11/2023 16:50

Do I DM 4 orders hun

mrssanchez · 18/11/2023 16:51

Winter strawberries are flown in, bad for the environment and do taste of nothing... However, they are also one of the few things my bloody picky, autistic DC will actually eat in a packed lunch so it bothers me too!

GirrlCrush · 18/11/2023 16:51

Op you've shown us that photo twice now

It's irrelevant

Strawberries are out of season.... if you find them they will have been forcibly grown. And as a result, taste vile

MyKindOfWonderful · 18/11/2023 16:54

Raspberries are still available, can't you use those ?

uhOhOP · 18/11/2023 16:57

Strawberries in November? I know it's been pointed out 30 times already, but it was my first thought and I couldn't resist. They are flying in from Jordan, which is 3,000 miles away. I can't imagine how awful they'd taste.

ManchesterGirl2 · 18/11/2023 17:03

This is a stealth advertising post, right?

Catandsquirrel · 18/11/2023 17:05

But why do they need strawberries? Hard fondant icing in artificial colours doesn't exactly make an exquisite match with fresh summer fruits

Morrisons haven't had any raspberries or strawberries for weeks but my mum got some in Tesco this morning.

Nellieinthebarn · 18/11/2023 17:07

Not very helpful if you are miles away from here, but Aldi, Tesco and Co-op have them in the Forest of Dean. I think some were in union Jack packaging too, but must be indoor grown even from the South West.

FuckingHellAdele · 18/11/2023 15:52

Who wants shit strawberries in November?

My kids!
