Is this local to my area or is everywhere being inundated by people wearing dry robes like they're a winter coat?

I actually can’t get mad about it, we started using them years ago when starting sea swims, everyone seemed to have them but never saw them anywhere else. Now they are everywhere not just the beach and I can see why, the warmth is next level!

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 18/11/2023 12:07

I know of 3 people wearing them at the moment. One says it's ideal.for wearing when she watches her son play football and the weather is crap .
They're quite pricey I think but do look cosy . I'm short 5ft so I'd imagine it'll touch the floor

TigerRag · 18/11/2023 12:08

It's not just you.

I have one for swimming. But it's the towel version.

GCAcademic · 18/11/2023 12:09

I haven’t seen them out and about but I’ve recently started swimming again after a hiatus of several years, and it’s a completely different experience at the pool now. Dry robes, pull buoys, fins, timers - none of those were a thing last time I swam. Every bugger seems to be training for a triathlon (my sense is that the MAMILs of old have found a way to increase their opt-out of family responsibilities, by adding running and swimming to their time-consuming cycling).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/11/2023 12:10

Honestly it has been so wet here, they seem the most appropriate thing to wear.

KevinDeBrioche · 18/11/2023 12:12

Do you live in Crouch End?

shockeditellyou · 18/11/2023 12:12

Yep, at my kids (indoor, non sporty) Saturday activity and there are loads of them. We are miles away from the nearest outdoor swimming location and they are being worn over Norma clothes. They look ridiculous, especially with the dry robe branding.

Scruffington · 18/11/2023 12:13

I suppose it's like people wearing those creepy toe shoes to the pub, or wearing expensive hiking boots to Sainsbury's. Wanting to signal to people that you're involved in a certain physical activity.

As long as they don't use the phrase 'wild swimming' I can make peace with seeing them everywhere all of a sudden.

IndecentFeminist · 18/11/2023 12:13

Yes, and I don't understand why. They're no warmer or more waterproof than a decent coat, their unique feature.ia that they're cut to enable changing underneath. Do if you're not doing the latter why not wear a coat? I presume it is to declare to the world that you go to the beach/sea swim. I mean, I have one, for changing in on the beach. But it doesn't fill any other role better than anything else.

McConkeysPlate · 18/11/2023 12:18

I absolutely love mine. We camp often and it’s the best thing I have found due to the length and the thickness. It has loads of pockets so I can keep all sorts in them. It’s great for the school run too in this weather, I stay as dry as a bone. I see lots of people wearing them and I can see why. It doesn’t bother me if people think I look a twat. It’s perfect for me and my lifestyle.

No, I'm miles away but equally miles away from large expanses of outdoor water you're able to participate in water sports on also.

I have one for outdoor swimming, and also wear it to other outdoor sports sometimes if the weather is horrible or if I'm going to need to get changed outdoors. I could see why rugby/football mums might be wearing them to a match/to wander round before and after to be honest - they'll keep you warmer and drier than a normal coat and frankly if I had to stand there for 3 hours in the pouring rain I would not care how ridiculous I looked.

meagert · 18/11/2023 12:29

Is this another marketing attempt? Every so often a thread like this comes up for dry robes worded almost exactly the same, I've never heard of them and had to google, which is why it has stuck in my mind.

Rosiem2808 · 18/11/2023 12:32

I don't care if it's a marketing attempt. I am desperate for one (when funds allow)

FloozingThePlot · 18/11/2023 12:33

Yep - saw someone in one doing a big shop in Tesco yesterday.

Omletteandsalad · 18/11/2023 12:38

I have one for swimming and it Iives in the back of my car.

Last week I got wet on a long run to meet my husband for coffee. It was like an oasis in the desert. I'm definitely not signalling anything. It's just everywhere because it's so useful.

I will never understand how anyone can get upset about other peoples choices. Like crocs. I loathe them but when they were everywhere I didn't ascribe the wearers as some sort of personality type.

No idea why dryrobes promote so much hate.

RuthW · 18/11/2023 12:40

What's a dry robe?

ChicoryDip · 18/11/2023 12:42

Lots around here at weekends for watching kids' sport. They are big enough to go over another coat so tend to be used as an extra warm, dry layer when the weather turns.

No. Nor do I hate them, I've been into town today and they're everywhere!

I saw someone wearing one into my office yesterday, in central London 😂
i’ve definitely seen more people wearing them.
I get that they’re warm but they just look so massive (because they’re designed to get changed under at the beach aren’t they? That’s just what an outdoor swimmer friend told me!) but they look a bit silly when you’re not being outdoorsy and using them to get changed under.
I mean, I don’t care what people wear, but I do think they look a bit out of place unless you’re on a beach!

itsallnewnow · 18/11/2023 12:46

I second thé lady who said they're excellent for keeping warm on winter mornings stuck watching a kid play sport outside, that and a coffee make it doable

londonmummy1966 · 18/11/2023 12:48

Mine was a godsend changing in the rain after my swim on Tuesday - even more of a godsend walking back afterwards when it started sheeting down - only bit of me that was wet was the 6 inches below the hem. I probably looked an idiot popping into M&S enroute but I was dry.

RedCoffeeCup · 18/11/2023 12:49

They're not just for outdoor swimming and water sports, my DD plays netball and coaches / umpires and her dry robe is fantastic in winter.

museumum · 18/11/2023 12:52

I out mine on top of my running gear when I have to wait about for one of the dc (I run while they do their sports). It really helps avoid the sudden chills when you’re sweaty or wet/muddy.

There are quite a few outdoor swimming places in london though; several without indoor changing facilities.
