Is this local to my area or is everywhere being inundated by people wearing dry robes like they're a winter coat?

A few people wear them to our local lido. I haven’t noticed them otherwise.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 18/11/2023 14:49

@HaveANiceFuckingDay I'm 5'2 and a size 12. I wear a kids one. It's the same size as the small adult but shorter.

margotrose · 18/11/2023 14:50

I've never seen anyone wear one and I'm a dog walker in rural Cumbria.

Everyone around here is head to toe in GoreTex!

TorroFerney · 18/11/2023 14:52

I was saying the exact same thing last week. It’s always the camo print ones with the pink inside. I can only assume they must be very comfortable.

I saw someone wearing one into my office yesterday, in central London 😂
i’ve definitely seen more people wearing them.
I get that they’re warm but they just look so massive (because they’re designed to get changed under at the beach aren’t they? That’s just what an outdoor swimmer friend told me!) but they look a bit silly when you’re not being outdoorsy and using them to get changed under.
I mean, I don’t care what people wear, but I do think they look a bit out of place unless you’re on a beach!

Ah now that makes sense, I thought they were just being worn by large people but it’s probably the size of the garment not the person!

liveforsummer · 18/11/2023 14:56

My girls are horsey so i see the equestrian version instead. They are throughly practical for keeping you warm and dry in bad weather and I assume the robes are the same . I drive to work along a city sea front so the actual dry robes I see mostly in their natural habitat as people don't tend to wear them where I live further in to the city centre

foxlover47 · 18/11/2023 14:58

Another horsey family so me and
My daughter have the equestrian version , worth every Penny I also wear mine for dog walking

Psychoticbreak · 18/11/2023 15:06

I live a 3 minute walk from the sea so everyone where I am has them - well not me cos I wont swim in the sea but most others.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 18/11/2023 15:12

80% of the parents of the 2 opposing teams at my child's football match today were wearing them, I half wondered if they all text to arrange it before hand Grin it was a pleasant 15 degrees here today. The team is from a very naice village whereas we're in a big town (which ironically is by the sea!).

UnbreakMyFart · 18/11/2023 15:14

If you want to get changed while wearing one do you do them right up to the neck and shimmy your wet/dry clothes up and down the inside while your arms are out of the sleeves?

I think I'd get all panicky.

cariadlet · 18/11/2023 15:18

I have a friend at work who wears one.

She does a lot of paddleboarding and I think that's why she bought it originally.

I borrowed it once when I was helping out at an evening event which involved being stuck outside in the cold for several hours.
I was unbelievably warm and dry. It was in a different league from any coat I've ever had.

pinkpanther84 · 18/11/2023 15:50

Lots at my sons rugby. But also saw a couple the other day in sainsburys wearing matching ones

Yes.

They're very big (deliberately) so it's really easy to do.

I don't care if it's a marketing attempt. I am desperate for one (when funds allow)

There are loads that aren't the same brand but do the same job. Don't get sucked in by the name

ssd · 19/11/2023 08:56

Id love one

IndecentFeminist · 18/11/2023 12:13

Yes, and I don't understand why. They're no warmer or more waterproof than a decent coat, their unique feature.ia that they're cut to enable changing underneath. Do if you're not doing the latter why not wear a coat? I presume it is to declare to the world that you go to the beach/sea swim. I mean, I have one, for changing in on the beach. But it doesn't fill any other role better than anything else.

I can’t afford a coat which does the job as well as a dry robe (which was a present), so given the choice to be cold and wet on a dog walk and have to change when I get home, or wear a dry robe, there’s no debate really. It does make me smile that people get very snobby about it.

terriblyangryattimes · 19/11/2023 09:06

Lots where I am, but it's a seaside/river town so mostly forgiveable. Not for me though, I'm a fair weather sea swimmer and tend to only go in when it's warm enough to dry in the sun!

KenAdams · 19/11/2023 09:08

They're pricey so if you double it up as a winter coat it's worth the investment. I imagine it also does a good job of covering up PJ's on the school run too.

WhatWindyWeather · 19/11/2023 10:26

I am disabled and not into wild swimming etc., but I have considered buying one. The reason for this is that I have a mobility scooter and thought that whilst I was sat down, a waterproof coat would ride up so that my thighs get wet, but this would be spacious enough to cover my knees and calves too. Any other disabled mobility scooter riders got any better ideas?

I want to get my son one for Xmas for Rugby. Are there any other brands people would recommend or does it have to be the price DryRibe ones?

Mountain Warehouse do a dryrobe type - its not as cosy as it is lined in towelling rather than fake shearling but they have good sales so you can normally pick one up for about £40. They are a bit longer than the Dryrobe.

livingthegoodlife · 19/11/2023 14:01

equidry and dryrobe in our house. ideal for riding and swimming.

my kids have told me that some kids are wearing them to school.... i think thats a bit much.

If you need to cover up on the school run because you cannot spend five minutes getting dressed, then you need to take a good hard look at yourself and self-respect. Or you are drinking too much in the evening. Or both.

CornishGem1975 · 19/11/2023 14:30

They very big in the football mum world, I think think they look ridiculous!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Lovethatforyouhun · 19/11/2023 14:35

I’m in the SE and considering it feels like its been raining every day for months i can’t blame people for wearing them!
