Is this local to my area or is everywhere being inundated by people wearing dry robes like they're a winter coat?

I love mine! Used for watching rugby, dog walks and at the yard when messing about with ponies. It lives in my car. I would never wear it into town but I think you should give one a ago and see how bloody brilliant they really are!

TheCadoganArms · 18/11/2023 12:57

Loads of people down my rowing club use them at head races or on the pontoon before outings. Rugby subs have been using them for well over a decade. Not sure if I would wear mine too the pub though.

Schoolsearchhh · 18/11/2023 12:58

They are everywhere. I had one (no longer) when they were fairly unknown (because of my water sport) and used to get asked where I got it from constantly! So I feel like I watched the rise of them. They’re lovely and warm. I totally get the appeal - being cosy in winter!

Got rid of mine as it swamped me a bit and I found a lined puffer coat I liked better that did the same job.

AIstolemylunch · 18/11/2023 13:00

I want to get my son one for Xmas for Rugby. Are there any other brands people would recommend or does it have to be the price DryRibe ones?

Is this another marketing attempt? Every so often a thread like this comes up for dry robes worded almost exactly the same, I've never heard of them and had to google, which is why it has stuck in my mind.

No, they genuinely are being worn as coats - I see them most at school drop off. Even the gate monitors wear them. You are probably seeing them without registering them.

CreepingCrone · 18/11/2023 13:01

I absolutely love mine. Originally bought for camping as I'm away in my van most weekends. It's perfect for sitting round a firepit or dashing to site showers and back. The inside pocket is big enough for a bottle of wine! 🍾😄 I do also wear it after lake swimming. I call it my outdoor dressing gown.
In my defence, it's not the DryRobe brand.

DryRobeWanker · 18/11/2023 13:03

I find it bizarre when people say things like "Oh they're excellent for keeping you dry watching DC play sports"
or
"but they're essential for staying warm on dog walks"
as though coats had never been invented.

DH got me one for kayaking and swimming, I don't find it as useful as other things tbh. For watching sport and walking in cold wet weather I have a coat which is warmer and fits better than the dry robe.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/11/2023 13:05

I've seen them around and I can see the attraction, I just think they would probably be too warm for me as I'm always hot. What I like about it is that it's cut to be very roomy. I like to wear loose things, so I'm light and flowy in the summer and tunic type tops and baggy jumpers in the winter. Coats are generally quite snug, and if I try on bigger ones so that they're a bit roomier then they're too big across the shoulders and don't sit right. I prefer a 'swing' style that fits on the shoulders and flares out from the armpit downwards, but that hasn't been available in the shops for about a decade now, it's all fitted to the waist.

Octavia64 · 18/11/2023 13:10

I bought one for swimming (I do do outdoor swimming in the winter) and I love it.

In the rain they keep you much drier than a normal coat.

mindutopia · 18/11/2023 13:10

I wear mine places sometimes, though it’s not a dry robe, it’s a cheap knock off. It’s because it’s warm and waterproof and I don’t really have the extra money to by a nice warm, waterproof winter coat right now. Seems silly not to use what you already own. I’m a proper cold water swimmer though, I sea swim in January. I haven’t just bought it to be a twat because everyone else has one.

casuarinatree · 18/11/2023 13:11

I see loads of them on the school run in south London. We do have a Lido locally, but I'm pretty sure that not everyone I see wearing one has just been for a swim.

Theproofofthepudding · 18/11/2023 13:11

I bought the primark version a couple of years back for less than £40...I love it for its handy pockets warmth and weatherproofness.

Oriunda · 18/11/2023 13:19

I bought the Dryrobe towelling version for my son years ago when he started swimming lessons at a pool where there was no privacy. They size up huge (I got the 10-14; he’s coming up to 12 now). Fantastic for changing aftewards, and he uses it at the beach all summer. Plus as a towel after the bath. It gives him the privacy he wants. Downside is that they’re huge and take up masses of space.

Theproofofthepudding · 18/11/2023 13:19

And yes to the pp a bottle of wine easily fits in the pocket...its perfect when you're in your pj's and want a top up from the corner shop!

LeRougeEtLeNoir · 18/11/2023 13:28

I have the Oodie version. Does it count? @Username467849865
Bought after reading one of those threads on a Dry Robe.

Snowdropanddiddums · 18/11/2023 13:39

I don’t see a problem with them. There’s no rule that they have to be worn on the beach or cold water swimming. If they’re keeping people warm and dry on dog walks or whatever then good! I’m sure lots of people wear lots of things you also wouldnt want to wear, not sure why it’s dry robes in particular that get so much hate on mumsnet.

RuthW · 18/11/2023 12:40

What's a dry robe?

Cross between a raincoat and a dressing gown.

PearlClutzsche · 18/11/2023 14:18

I’d love one. I swim in the sea all year round and walk a big dog in the countryside every day. In Wales 🌧️!
Most raincoats are too short.

A friend has something similar that she wears to work with horses.

NatMoz · 18/11/2023 14:29

I think the Ddipp version is better and more versatile.

It fits into it's own bag (like a pac a mac) which is great as space is a premium when camping!

It also has zip off sleeves for the person who said it may get too hot!

I also think the colours are fab!

Sea Monster Hydro Adult

The uprated ddipp Sea Monster Hydro is now twice as waterproof, with a few additional pocket zips and improved.breathability. Still all the great features from the Sea Monster such as the packaway pocket and the lightweight and really comfortable fit.

I believe that the collective noun for wearers is 'dry robe wankers' according to a recent MN thread.

AdoraFruitcake · 18/11/2023 14:34

Haven’t seen a single one yet (London).

LlynTegid · 18/11/2023 14:34

Very expensive in my opinion.

FunkyMonks · 18/11/2023 14:38

They are fab my children have one each keeps them warm after swimming and to be honest weather is dire in the uk always raining more than sunshine.

trialanderrordarling · 18/11/2023 14:40

I saw someone wearing one in central London yesterday and I fully expect to see more around as we head into winter.

grayhairdontcare · 18/11/2023 14:42

They are very popular on the nursery drop off at the moment
