Is this local to my area or is everywhere being inundated by people wearing dry robes like they're a winter coat?

I live in the original home of the Dry Robe & they are very common but I love them. Both for beach/surfing but also for standing on the sidelines… as someone said above it goes over your coat!

lochmaree · 19/11/2023 21:29

@NatMoz thanks! been looking for one and hadn't seen this brand yet and it looks fab.

lochmaree · 19/11/2023 21:40

has anyone got a link for the mountain warehouse one? I cam only find a mens one

Could I go to the swimming pool, come out and chuck one on and drive home?! I can’t bend one leg and don’t go swimming as can’t face trying to get dressed in the changing room.

Definitely. I bought one (a different brand) for this very reason and its so nice to not have to deal with the grotty showers and tiny changing cubicles

brokenhearted2 · 19/11/2023 21:57

@liveforsummer @foxlover47 what are the equestrian versions please?

Yuja · 19/11/2023 21:58

My DC have had them for a couple of years as they are competitive swimmers- they usually just bung their dryrobe on and we can head home, or they change quickly underneath it. Recently, however, I keep seeing them at the school gates so they are definitely gaining popularity where I am, in place of a normal coat it seems

brokenhearted2 · 19/11/2023 22:02

@liveforsummer @foxlover47 sorry what I mean is, how aww the equestrian ones different?

liveforsummer · 19/11/2023 22:04

@brokenhearted2 the 'equidry' which is the original and similar other brands tend have side zips on the skirt and leg loops to accommodate sitting on a saddle and to stop it flapping in the wind when doing so.

foxlover47 · 19/11/2023 22:05

Hi @brokenhearted2
I don't know for sure if they are very different , they're by Equidry , fleecey warm inside and maybe cost a bit more , a friend uses the primark dry robe version as much cheaper but they keep your legs covered when you're out riding aswell so are functional for that

Dry robes everywhere!
grumpycow1 · 19/11/2023 22:09

Yep saw one on a guy on the tube the other day, he definitely didn’t look like he’d been for a swim! Saw one on a lady walking down the street too.

grumpycow1 · 19/11/2023 22:12

I really like the style but would hate having the word dry robe plastered over it- I’d pay the same for just a plain non-branded one!

TheAirbender · 19/11/2023 22:15

We got my rugby playing son an Osprey one from Amazon. Much cheaper than the Dryrobe brand and he loves it.

gawditswindy · 19/11/2023 22:45

I feel sorry for wild swimmers because how will people know they're wild swimmers now, if everyone is wearing them?

BogRollBOGOF · 19/11/2023 23:05

I've got a cheaper version which lives in the car. It is genuinely used for changing after swimming or running or just slinging on afterwards. It might make its way into a supermarket after I've been to a fitness class and the chills kick in. It has been used on a school run on days when the rain is bouncing off the pavement and you'd otherwise be wet up to your knees; it beats joining the strings of jammed up cars of fair weather walkers who don't want to get wet. It's also a boost for layering over a lighter coat for waterproofing/ wind protection/ warmth. It's also good for hanging around spectating or supporting outdoor sports. Plus camping. It's also good in heavy summer rain as being baggy, you get a bit of airflow through and the towelling doesn't get heavily wetted or bunch up from sweating.

It's not my everyday coat, but it's very versatile to keep avaliable to enhance other layers or change under for people who spend a lot of time outside.

Wheeking15 · 19/11/2023 23:06

Me too @Rosiem2808. They look so snuggly and perfect for a guinea pig to snuggle into.

SaturdayGiraffe · 19/11/2023 23:27

Do you think you could wear one on a bike?

GrizabellaGerbil · 19/11/2023 23:40

I have a cheaper version and it’s great. I would wear it over my coat so that when child was subbed off the rugby pitch, it was pre-warmed for them. I use it for changing after outdoor swimming. As a first aider, it was great for keeping injured players warm even their arm is in a sling.

TorroFerney · 20/11/2023 07:28

do you think there were similar conversations when people first started wearing track suits away from the track?!

It would be at risk of catching in your wheels.

I would imagine so. There are still plenty of people who disapprove of sportswear when you're not doing sports.

I remember when I was a teenager (about a million years ago) and it was then considered very naff and unstylish to wear trainers when not exercising. Now, if I go out into town about 80% of people - whether young or old, or male or female - seem to be wearing them. Well, they are comfy!
It seems that fashion these days has moved more in the direction of comfort and practicality.

I find wild swimmers are a bit like vegans...they can't help but tell you.

Unless it's an ebike you'd be sweating in minutes. They really are very very warm. I don't wear mine walking, only standing/sitting around and I suspect the dogwalkers who wear them are doing some standing about / throwing balls for their dogs rather than a purposeful hike.

All the mountain warehouse ones are here - the don't seem to have any own brand women's ones although there are four by other suppliers. TBH they aren't a fitted garment so I'd also look at a S or M men's one or a large child's depending on height and size. https://www.mountainwarehouse.com//Search/beach%20changing%20robe/

I love mine, I am guilty of wearing it on the school run or in the supermarket, usually because I'm heading back from a dog walk or I've been out watching the kids training until 8pm during winter months.
TBH I don't really care if anyone judges me, I'm really warm and dry so it's worth it.
Also DC school have dry robes as their sports coats. Went to a netball tournament and I would say 80% of school kids had dry robes on, some schools branded others not. They were all indie schools though.
