You may be preventing a fucking divorce here, so please help by answering this question -

Question: If I said "It's milder today than it was yesterday", would you take that to mean:
A: Its warmer than it was yesterday
B: Its colder than yesterday

Very many thanks!

Milder means colder to me. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

TotalOverhaul · 15/11/2023 13:20

It means warmer. Milder than yesterday means not as cold as yesterday.

sparklefresh · 15/11/2023 13:20

It depends. If it was hot yesterday and it's a bit cooler today then it means cooler. If it was cold yesterday and it's a bit warmer today, it means warmer.

Mary28 · 15/11/2023 13:21

I would say A too. But, if it was 40 degrees yesterday and you said that, I would take it to mean it is less hot today. But if you are in Europe this week, then A 100%.

Not in Yorkshire. When Paul Hudson does the weather he always used "milder" to mean less cold.

Colder... though we are getting very warm unseasonal weather just lately.
Milder, to me, means less extreme.
If it were mid Winter and freezing then a milder day would be warmer than yesterday. During a raging hot spell, I would call it milder if the next day were cooler.

Exactly!

Maybe you're just one of those people who use words wrongly. Like saying 'pacific' when they mean 'specific'.

Milder means less extreme.

So if it was very cold yesterday, milder today means it is less cold today.

If it was 35 degrees yesterday, milder today means it is less hot today.

In November in the Northern Hemisphere I would tend to assume that milder means it is warmer.

Notmetoo · 15/11/2023 13:25

Of course it's A - warmer.

stayathomer · 15/11/2023 13:25

Oh my god I can’t answer this at all- it’s so true- could mean either! (I was edging towards warmer but stopped!!)

therealcookiemonster · 15/11/2023 13:25

whatever are you waiting for? LTB

Sugarfree23 · 15/11/2023 13:25

Warmer.

I think the less harsh definition is the right one.
A harsh winter = very cold
mild winter = OK winter

Hot curry = get the water ready
Mild curry = enjoyable.

Hot weather follows the same logic as curries. Too hot weather or curry isn't comfortable or enjoyable.

HyggeTygge · 15/11/2023 13:26

"Milder" means "less different", so saying it's milder today than yesterday means the weather is exactly the same on both days.

Not really, of course, I just wanted the challenge of posting something even stupider than your DH.

Milder = warmer (for weather)
Milder = cooler (for curry)

🤷🏻‍♀️

LylaLee · 15/11/2023 13:27

As you're in the UK, in November, if you are talking about the local weather and say 'milder', you mean it is not so cold. It is warmer.

EeesandWhizz · 15/11/2023 13:27

I would say there is a tiny grey area - here the weather is milder than yesterday. Yesterday was actually 1 degree warmer, but the wind and rain made it feel horrible. Today the sun is out and the winds are low, making it mild, but still technically cooler than yesterday.

If it was mid twenties yesterday and today was in the thirties no one would say it was milder today.

That's because neither the twenties nor the thirties are mild weather.
