You may be preventing a fucking divorce here, so please help by answering this question -

Question: If I said "It's milder today than it was yesterday", would you take that to mean:
A: Its warmer than it was yesterday
B: Its colder than yesterday

Very many thanks!

Ok so technically it just means "less harsh" so it could be both depending on whether it was very hot or very cold. So technically, neither are wrong.

However when referring to weather it's almost always used to mean warmer.

WaWaWaWaaaaaa · 15/11/2023 12:38

Warmer if it was very cold yesterday but colder if it was hot yesterday.

Mild is between hot and cold.

Notsureofname2 · 15/11/2023 12:39

Colder.

WaWaWaWaaaaaa · 15/11/2023 12:39

If it was mid twenties yesterday and today was in the thirties no one would say it was milder today.

Marmite27 · 15/11/2023 12:40

Warmer.

from the Cambridge dictionary:

mild adjective (WEATHER)Mild weather is not very cold or not as cold as usual: We've had a mild winter this year.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 15/11/2023 12:40

It would depend on the weather yesterday

If yesterday was freezing it means it's warmer, if yesterday was a scorcher it means it's cooler

Threewheeler1 · 15/11/2023 12:40

Warmer. Never heard it used to mean the opposite, and I do a lot of talking about the weather because I'm a bit dull 😁

This. I use it in both contexts

Agreed. A day that is 25 after a 35 heatwave is also milder as it's closer to the average.

But people usually only use it in colder weather so it nearly always means warmer.

Yoyoban · 15/11/2023 12:41

Depends on the context. I'd take it to mean not as extreme. So if yesterday was cold, it means it's warmer, if yesterday was really hot it means it's cooler.

That being said, I personally wouldn't really use it in the context of meaning colder, so generally it means it's warmer

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 15/11/2023 12:42

I'm pretty sure people use it to mean warmer but I always feel like it should mean colder

obje · 15/11/2023 12:42

Depends what yesterday was like.

If you live at the North Pole and had 4ft of snow and it's melted over night, it's milder today.

If you live in a typically hot country and the temperature has dipped over night it's milder today?

OpenLanes · 15/11/2023 12:42

Warmer.
It could apply to either as it just means less extreme, but in local dialect at least I would expect to hear "cooler" for "less hot" weather, or "milder" for "less cold" where it doesn't qualify for being "warmer" as its still cool temperatures.

MrsPinkL · 15/11/2023 12:42

It’s mild out today = fairly warm. You know like with chillies a mild one isn’t as hot as a hot one kinda thing

If weather then yes it means it's warmer.

But as others have said - if a curry for example then 'less hot'
