This virus is a doozy!

Got sick on Saturday, generally achy and exhausted, accompanied by a throat so sore it felt like I was swallowing razorblades (been checking, no white spots on tonsils so confident I've not got tonsillitis).

5 days later I'm worse rather than better, the cough is so painful, along with your standard streaming nose/eyes, ears and throat/neck and head feel like they're in a vice.

I.FEEL.AWFUL.

It's just a bad cold/flu type virus I'm sure, but by god I feel like death warmed up. A friend has it too and she's on day 9!

Anyone else? Is this a thing at the moment? Please tell me it goes as quickly as it arrives.

I have this, I'm now on day 5 and think I'm just on the mend, woke up feeling a bit better. Still coughing and not up to doing much, though.
I was feeling so rough I did a Covid test - negative, thank godl

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 15/11/2023 10:51

I've had all that with covid. 3 weeks in.

Mindymomo · 15/11/2023 10:54

Adult Son came down with this first, bad throat, coughing then sneezing, but all over for him after 5 days. Then I caught it, similar symptoms but so bunged up, having to cough to get relief. It’s taken me over 2 weeks to feel better, but still having coughing fits and taking vitamins, honey and ginger in my drinks. DH caught it and fortunately for him, he only felt rough for a day. He’s the only one in the family who was eligible for a Covid booster and I wonder if it’s helped him to not have it too bad, along with flu jab, but I’ve had that.

Don't tell me it hangs on that long. I'm on day 2. Started with a headache yesterday morning and now have no voice, razor throat, cough and head feels like it is going to pop.

2 negative covid tests. Actually feeling worse than when I had covid. It keeps triggering my asthma so now mainlining steroids too.

dumpkin · 15/11/2023 10:58

isn’t this covid? You may test positive till later

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 15/11/2023 11:00

I didn't test positive until 7 days in.

Greentomatoes21 · 15/11/2023 11:02

I'm on day 5 of something like this. You have my sympathy!

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 15/11/2023 11:13

DH told me recently that one of his work colleagues had had covid, was really unwell with it and had to see the GP, who told her that this most recent strain isn't always picked up by the covid test and may still show a negative. Which is a bit disconcerting.

I was horribly unwell with a virus just over a month ago, with similar symptoms, and am still not right. I also had painful earache and have still got some hearing loss. Despite getting a negative covid test, I'm not convinced it wasn't covid.

iPreferBooks · 15/11/2023 11:14

I had similar to what your describing.
It did turn out to be covid despite being triple jabbed and never had it before etc. Irritatingly I still have a small lingering cough but much better than I was. I think it lasted about 3 weeks.

Do you have a thermometer or a way to check if you have a temperature? I felt dreadful - shaking, cold, and alternating between hot/cold no wonder (my temp was 39.5).

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 15/11/2023 11:18

Yes, it's a thing, several threads in the last few weeks all saying similar.

It's almost certainly covid - it's knocking people off their feet for 1 - 2 weeks, but it's officially "mild" (because that means simply that you didn't need admitting to hospital, not that the illness is trivial). Only a small number of people now test, and for this variety it's possible to test negative until you've been ill for a few days already. But there are enough positive tests around (and from sentinel testing, which has resumed) to show we're in a covid wave.

The most important thing to do is rest - never try to push yourself through an illness that could well be covid.

Theproofofthepudding · 15/11/2023 11:23

Did anyone else have painfully swollen glands in their neck?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/11/2023 12:04

Interesting to hear it may be Covid but not necessarily being picked up on tests, or showing positive later on. I've done 2 tests over the past few days but both negative. Was due to have my booster and flu jab tomorrow (think I'm classified high risk due to a previous pulmonary embolism so get offered them), obviously had to cancel. May test again.

Yep got swollen glands, well, one side of my neck.

My HUGE sympathies with everyone with it, it's horrid. Had Covid last summer, thought I felt bad then but this is definitely worse.

spiderlight · 15/11/2023 12:08

DH and I had this last week. God it was horrible. I had a 39+ degree fever last Wednesday and could barely stand up. DH is still coughing, but we're pretty much OK other than that. Both negative for Covid and triple jabbed, but who knows?

easyellis · 15/11/2023 12:12

I've got this and if it is covid it's the fifth time I've had this year! Seventh total!

Is it just like a cold or is it gradually destroying my insides?!

Thingamebobwotsit · 15/11/2023 12:17

Week 6 here. Covid tests all clear. First week the worst but been up and down since. It is miserable.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/11/2023 12:19

Week 6?! Jesus wept.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 15/11/2023 12:35

Yes I had swollen painful glands on right side of neck.

It was the painful earache that got me. So painful it was keeping me awake. I thought I was heading for a burst eardrum, but it didn't burst. Both ears completely blocked up a couple of days after the earache and high temperature. I had to go to the walk in centre to see a doctor as it felt so bad. I was dizzy, nauseous and disorientated. She said it was an ear infection on top of everything else.

It's been weeks now and I'm still not right. Am due to see an audiologist soon as it appears to have damaged my hearing 😕

SausageAndEggSandwich · 15/11/2023 12:40

I'm on day 9 and had to ring in sick to work

I WFH but it's not getting any better so I think I need to rest

Started with horrendous sore throat, so bad I couldn't swallow properly. That subsided a bit and then the cough started, then got wheezy, now started sneezing and getting snotty.

I did do a Covid test but said it was negative.

tescocreditcard · 15/11/2023 12:41

Day 17 here. Think I can see the end in sight now, finally

TeddyBeans · 15/11/2023 12:43

I had a rubbish time last week, snotty and full sinuses, sore throat appeared on Tuesday, Wednesday had a couple episodes of cold sweats and shivers, Thursday my throat felt like it was tearing itself apart, Friday and the weekend it's been okay. This week is much better and I'm pretty much back to normal today other than a constant feeling of phlegm at the back of my throat that won't shift for toffee

Theproofofthepudding · 15/11/2023 12:44

Yes!! On right hand side only, this was for 10days, ibuprofen and paracetamol every 4 hours it went down then the cold syptoms started for me. So Ill for at least 3 weeks.
A friend who was tested for work was positive after several tests had been to visit the week prior to the earache, swollen glands and nausea

BearSoFair · 15/11/2023 12:47

Going through us at work at the moment, one colleague had never phoned sick in 15yrs until this week! The throat wasn't unbearable for me but my God, the headache...like someone was trying to push my eyes out from inside my skull. Awful.

Resisterance · 15/11/2023 12:54

I've had this.. felt awful for three solid weeks with it not helped by coughing all night so not getting any sleep.

I tested negative every day for covid so can't have been that but most I'll I've been for ages. Felt utterly wretched.

I hope you feel better soon

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/11/2023 13:30

Yes, the earache is awful. The pressure in both of them is so painful. And each cough now feels like it's tearing my throat apart.
