This virus is a doozy!

Got sick on Saturday, generally achy and exhausted, accompanied by a throat so sore it felt like I was swallowing razorblades (been checking, no white spots on tonsils so confident I've not got tonsillitis).

5 days later I'm worse rather than better, the cough is so painful, along with your standard streaming nose/eyes, ears and throat/neck and head feel like they're in a vice.

I.FEEL.AWFUL.

It's just a bad cold/flu type virus I'm sure, but by god I feel like death warmed up. A friend has it too and she's on day 9!

Anyone else? Is this a thing at the moment? Please tell me it goes as quickly as it arrives.

DH, DS and I all had that. I tested positive for covid. They didn't. It's horrible. Expect to feel weak and knackered for a week or two afterwards. Please take it very easy with loads of rest to avoid long covid.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 15/11/2023 13:35

I had it for four weeks, only just got rid of the cough after 6 weeks.
I actually drive 5 hours to stay with friends so they could look after me, that was a nightmare journey.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/11/2023 13:40

Day 9. Caught off hudband. Started with really achy teeth and jaw then horrendous sore throat and sinus area became very painful. Sneezing and coughing and build up of congestion in head meant I became partially deaf. Did covid test last week and came out negative. Very chesty cough now and continued sneezing. Been resting a lot and keeping warm. It’s a bastard of a thing.

I’m on day 12 of this beauty, and only just feeling better!

It has been brutal… Started off feeling “weird” with body-shaking chills and really nauseous, then by next day had earache and deafness in both ears, like the earache I got as a child (late 50s now) weakness, sweating/chills, no appetite and a horrific headache. The sweating at night was unreal, my hair was stuck to me! My DP has also had it, but not as bad, his has been with more coughing than me, but also the lack of appetite, headache, chills, etc.

Anyone know what it is? It has felt fat worse than the average snotty cold, but hasn’t felt like the doses of Covid that I had in 2021.

PearlSlaghoople · 15/11/2023 14:10

Just to add, my boss was bedridden with this, and he’s never ill. He wasn’t jabbed for Covid, neither did he catch it when we all did, but he wondered if this time it was Covid?

Apparently he was really unwell… very weak, white as a sheet, not eating etc, he’s mid 40s and usually fit and well.

To previous op, yes, forgot my teeth all ached! Usually that means my sinuses are about to start hurting ( yes, they really hurt, Sudafed blue box are the only meds that help)

TheTecknician · 15/11/2023 17:26

I've had a rather unpleasant virus since Saturday but nothing like as bad as what I've read here. Chesty, phlegmy cough, temperature yo-yo-ing, pounding headache, general aches and pains, variable appetite. I thought it might be a bacterial chest infection as I wouldn't normally expect a virus to last five days without showing some sign of abating. Doctor told me these things can last up to a fortnight. Big up to AFP for fitting me in same day!

May we all get well really soon.

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 15/11/2023 17:51

I started with this at the end of last week - I initially thought it was because I'd exerted myself by walking down the road the day before (have long covid, so sometimes hard to tell if have a new virus or symptoms just exacerbating). I've completely lost my voice and am vomiting more frequently than usual. Coughing loads - ranges from phlegmy to dry. Was snotty and more headachey than normal. Ears feel permanently blocked anyway as a long covid thing, but don't normally hurt, whereas on weekend were quite painful and pressured. Throat and tongue very sore, but long covid toothache feels better (hope that bit lasts). Sleeping a lot. Covid test negative.

Username917778 · 15/11/2023 17:51

Gosh I really relate to a lot of the symptoms being shared! I'm on day 7 now, began with a really sore throat, moved onto being wheezy and a chesty cough, to nose and eyes streaming and yesterday I started with earache and sinus pain resulting into really sore gums and teeth too! Interestingly mostly just on my right side. Just feel miserable.

Avatartar · 15/11/2023 17:59

Interesting - had 6 weeks of feeling off- starting with pea size painless (unless touched) lumps on right side of neck only with tiredness. Once they’d gone I got COVID quite mildly and felt ok, then 2 weeks later terrible sweats, headaches, nose, tired but no temperature- not testing positive. Slept lots and it seems to have gone again

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/11/2023 18:00

Interesting. I’ve had a mild case of this it seems: sore throat, earache, crushing headache, really weird swollen glands that felt like my neck was bruised. Negative covid test. I work from home so I’ve carried on working but on Monday I felt dreadful and have been incredibly tired.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/11/2023 18:16

It sounds as though its absolutely rife.

I'm on day 4 and have literally every symptom mentioned. The nights are horrific I'm having intense night sweats and absolutely mental dreams. I don't usually dream!

My 9 month old is so poorly with it. It's hell.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 15/11/2023 19:04

Yes, the sweats when you sleep are eugh. Am going to go drag myself out of bed for a bath, see if that helps at all.

MrsMurphyIWish · 15/11/2023 19:10

Day 16 and still unwell. All symptoms listed above. Came down ill in half term (obviously as I’m a teacher) and still unwell now. Just about dragging myself in each day. I’ve taken to drinking cough syrup straight out of the bottle! Phoned GP yesterday and have a telephone appointment booked for next Wednesday. I haven’t been this unwell since the last time I had Covid but we’re not given tests now so I wouldn’t know.

susiedaisy1912 · 15/11/2023 19:43

Day 11 here had all the same symptoms mentioned apart from temperature, did two covid tests both negative, the cough is starting to subside but have been left with labyrinthitis so feeling dizzy and tired. Had to be signed off work as can't drive or move around without feeling like I'm going fall over. Praying that it passes over soon. Sympathies to everyone on here.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/11/2023 19:45

Dh is only just getting over his bout of this and it’s been about 4 weeks.

rickandmorts · 15/11/2023 19:54

I'm on week 2 of this and feel fucking grim 😭 started puking up tonight too 😭

Taylorscat · 15/11/2023 19:54

Can I join just because I feel so awful although my virus is just a bad cold I think. I cannot stop sneezing with it, multiple sneezes and violent. Feel like utter shit. Day 3. I’m going out on Friday but I’ll have to cancel tomorrow unless a miracle happens.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 15/11/2023 20:28

My young adult son has all those symptoms cold, nose streaming for days, sneezing non stop for days, throat in bits, bones sore, and now 5 weeks later had to get emergency appt. at doctors as had to leave college early yesterday as his chest awful for weeks, wheezing and he is drained. Tried so many over the counter products for him to get the mucus out and he never goes to the doctor. He was given antibiotics and a steroid inhaler. Everyone has it and it lingers for weeks. So get to the doctor soon as possible so it does not get into your chest if I were you as wasted so much money on stuff that did nothing to clear the mucus, nasal drip and went to chest. Hope you all get better soon.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 15/11/2023 20:36

Taylorscat my son's sneezes were multiple violent sneezes and he was exhausted after 3 days of that and then when he got over that he got the dizzy spells, drained, upset tummy, the works. Everyone has it here in Ireland and so hard to get rid of also. Please go to the doctor so you can get something for it before it gets worse as over the counter meds do nothing, sudofed good for the sinus but if it gets into the chest which it usually does with nasal drip then you need steroids etc or antibiotic. Hope everyone feels somewhat better soon. Also he had awful dreams which he usually never remembers dreams.

Taylorscat · 15/11/2023 20:38

@BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants ah your poor son! Thank you - I’ve got Sudafed tablets which are making me feel a bit better, the sneezing is still violent though. I think mine is just a heavy cold, I’m not in bed, just slumped in front of the telly for hours. Although about to take my nighttime Sudafed and hopefully conk out for 12 hours!

Taylorscat · 15/11/2023 20:39

I’ll definitely heed your advice if I’m still unwell after the weekend though!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 15/11/2023 20:50

Hope you get well soon, drink some hot water with lemon also as soothes the throat. I can only take sudofed spray as the tablets have that stuff in it that makes me feel as if I am tripping out of my head, took them many years ago and was feeling so strange on them. Mind yourself and if you are feeling up to it have a good old Irish hot whiskey with lemon, cloves, brown sugar or honey. If nothing else it will help you sleep.

TheTecknician · 15/11/2023 21:23

Can somebody please invent an all-cure pill for all these nasty viruses?

JMAngel1 · 15/11/2023 21:40

I hate to tell you guys but I’m on week 7. Was absolutely awful the first week - bed bound for 3 days but since then I have had no energy, fevers, hot and cold, shivering, the snottiest nose and the worst cough that makes me vomit most mornings. It’s been horrific. I’ve had 2 courses of antibiotics which haven’t done a thing and a chest x ray which luckily showed no abnormalities.
So what the hell is wrong with me? 7 weeks! Aside from the first 3 days, I’ve been struggling through work and kids. It’s been horrible.
