I need a good cry. What songs make you cry? I might make a playlist. The Disturbed version of The Sound of Silence gets the tears flowing for me, especially if I sing along loudly, although it's a marmite song here on mn.

OP posts:
Knackeredhamster · 14/11/2023 21:03

Famous Last Words - Tears for Fears

Rings of Saturn - Nick Cave

Lots that have already been suggested.

I lost my mum 10 weeks ago. Songs are bittersweet but I know they're there for me in good and bad.

Sorry just making me think.

Xx

Literally anything since having children 😆- what's that about?

PatFussy · 14/11/2023 21:55

Chamber of reflection - your anxiety buddy. I always put this on when I need a cry.

Sellingbedtime · 14/11/2023 21:56

I second This Woman's Work.

OP, you are going to need a cheer me up playlist after listening to all of these.

DD has a book version of Coat of Many colours (it's basically just the song but as a story) and I can't read it without crying half way through and it's very difficult to explain it to her.

I don't want to talk about it, the Everything but the Girl version, playing on the radio in the Uber as DH and I travelled home from the hospital after being told there was no heartbeat.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 14/11/2023 22:35

Amazing song, amazing Sparks.

Have you seen the documentary Sparks brothers.

Yes, isn't it fabulous. Have seen it a couple of times.
Saw them live in Manchester in May too. Best concert I have been to in years.
Looks like they will be touring again next year! Exciting, especially as have heard rumours they might be doing something special for the 40 year anniversary of both the Kimono My House and Propaganda albums.
Glad to see I am not alone in the Sparks love!

Breathe No More - Evanescence if you’re feeling emo

The Call - Regina Spektor if comforting things make you cry

Nimrod - Edward Elgar if you’re more into classical or suffering bereavement, super common funeral song

Bogorodiste Devo by Rachmaninov - so calming and gorgeous but also sad and with funereal undertones for me

I Can’t Make you Love Me - the Bon Iver version is heartbreaking

A Far Green Country from the LOTR soundtrack is very sad to me in context

Blue - cover by Faouzia. Discovered it through the BBC’s Red Rose and it just gets that atmosphere that encapsulates depression

Final one, and this is a choral one as well, and I Saw a New Heaven by Edgar Bainton. As a non-believer there’s something unbelievably poignant about beautiful music hopeful for the afterlife when there isn’t one.

sashh · 15/11/2023 02:16

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.

elm26 give your little girl an extra cuddle today.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 15/11/2023 02:25

Sorry, coming back with a couple more:

No more from Into the Woods (preferably not the film version). Again it just pictures hopelessness.

For an instrumental capture of real anguish, Death of Cedric from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire score. If that doesn’t make you cry, the only thing that will is going to be watching the actual scene. That’s my SON! That’s my BOY! It’s agony.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 15/11/2023 02:28

And one (just one) extra: Wizard Motor by Mogwai. To be honest the relief at the chord change thirty seconds in is enough to make anyone sob.

RecoveringBorderline · 15/11/2023 04:11

Time after Time - Cyndi Lauper

The End of the World - Skeeter Davis

Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)

The Fields of athenry

Fields of Gold - Sting

The Captain- Pink Floyd

savethatkitty · 15/11/2023 05:55

Pearl Jam - the last kiss. The lyrics are heartbreaking (to me).

If I need a huge, big old ugly cry, i read "A pets Prayer" & reminisce about old friends
