If you don't like tattoos

Can you say why?

I'm fed up of people who think those with tattoos are rough arsed bikers, thick or common.

They are permanent and i know people's tastes change over years.
I think skin is beautiful as it is and doesn't need changing.

I have a horror themed tattoo on my leg with Jason, Freddy and a couple of others

Obviously you can do what you like with your own body but...I cannot for the life of me understand why you would do that to yourself. I can guarantee you that 99% of people who see it think it looks fucking awful.

Do you make all your life decisions based upon what other people will think? Who cares what other people think, her body, her choice.

ButDaddyILoveHim · 12/11/2023 16:41

Beezknees · 12/11/2023 16:37

Oh now, I wouldn't say 99%. Perhaps around 80%? 😆

I don't care if people think it looks awful, I didn't get it for other people!

Fair enough! 😆 I guess it's one of those things that non-tattoo-lovers will just never 'get'. There are loads of things I love/am interested in/a big fan of, but it would never ever occur to me to get my skin permanently marked to demonstrate my devotion.

"But loads of people do that with a wedding or engagement ring all the time and the assumption at least is "until death""

Agreed (and I think my wedding ring would date my marriage fairly accurately to the 90s!) but it's small, people probably wouldn't judge it as harshly as a tattoo and I can remove it any time without losing the significance of the marriage.

Plus, that's just my feeling on one of the many reasons I wouldn't personally want a tattoo. I wouldn't comment on someone else's.

Wotsitfappe · 12/11/2023 16:47

I'm coming around to them I've come across some amazing art. But mainly because people who have them often think they are cool and edgy but they're really basic and mainstream now.

Also there's a lot of terrible ones. But it's subjective and each to their own etc.

I think there are 2 different types of people who get tattoos. The ones who have minimalist, beautiful designs that are really meaningful and then the others who have a lot of random ones just because they wanted to. I'm in the latter category. 😂

Me, I don't like my skin. It's mottled, I look grey in winter. Hated my legs and would never get them out. I guess I could have learned to love myself the way I am, but I got tattoos instead and it improved my self confidence so much and I'll happily get my legs out now. Hopefully not scaring too many kids though! It's a pretty extreme thing to do and I know that but I genuinely have no regrets. Out of the 50+ I have, only hated one so much that I had laser removal.

YouJustDoYou · 12/11/2023 16:49

It's cultural in my country. People with tattoos were ALWAYS with "gangsters". Even now many places such as swimming pools won't let anyone in with tattoos.

I wasn't comparing a wedding ring to a tattoo though, but to the comment that a poster wouldn't always want to wear one necklace

I guess I don't see the difference between a necklace and a wedding ring

I get a wedding ring isn't the same as a tattoo as you can take it off and technically change it if you ended up really hating it

MinnieL · 12/11/2023 16:54

I don’t understand how someone looks at a tattoo and thinks ‘yep, that person deserves to be judged.’ I just don’t get the correlation and I have no tattoos either

Thank you for responding to my rather sniffy posts with more grace than they probably deserved 🙂 I'm glad to hear that it's helped with your self-confidence.

Disturbia81 · 12/11/2023 16:55

I like them on others but don't want them on my own skin even though I'm very alternative. I just think I'd regret them!
I do like looking at the artwork on others though, makes for a more interesting world.

dylanschicken · 12/11/2023 16:57

I find naked skin really attractive, covering it up takes away from that.

SeasonalBlue · 12/11/2023 14:27

To me, it's like going into nature and graffitiing all over beautiful trees. They're better off as nature intended: to me a tattoo looks like my child when he's drawn on his hand at school and it needs washing off before bed.

But I realise I'm in the minority and accept that!

@SeasonalBlue
Well, I'm with you on that, so we're in a minority of at least two! 🤷‍♀️

GonnaNeedABiggerBag · 12/11/2023 16:59

I’ve never seen one that looks good. I’ve never told anyone with a tattoo what I think but I strongly dislike them and think they’re both ugly and daft unless for strong cultural reasons such as the person is Māori

caringcarer · 12/11/2023 17:01

I think they look vile and as people age they look horrendous.

rwalker · 12/11/2023 17:04

tattoos don’t age well

my son’s friend had a full sleeve tattoo that wet look colour type look amazing in a 6ft 20 year old

fast forward to guy I work with 60 overweight covered in faded stretched tattoos looks dreadful

Popetthetreehugger · 12/11/2023 17:06

A lot of years ago I briefly dated a guy who’s ex wife was in the police . Their son was being restrained/ arrested ( who knows 🤷‍♀️) and the officer suddenly stoped and said are you so and sos son ? His tattoo was so lifelike of his mum ! The one of his dad looked like a fat Freddy mercury , not even close !

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/11/2023 17:06

I think a small tattoo can look quite attractive. What I’ve noticed though, is that it often becomes somewhat of an obsession, adding more and more quite randomly, so there’s no plan or theme and they then just look messy. I’ve been going to my hairdresser for about two years and during that time, he’s increased the number of tattoos massively, so they look like random drawings all over his arms and legs. Then, if they want more, they have to be fitted into the spaces and they don’t match the originals.

If people feel that it makes them more attractive, or improves their well being, that’s up to them.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 12/11/2023 17:14

Never seen one l like.
I don't have a problem with the idea of them, although l think the whole permanence of them would make me think they need to not be too obvious bit l literwlly have neber said the word "oh wow l love that tattoo!"

I think it's unrealistic to expect people not to notice marks on other people but at the same time, it's not unreasonable to expect people not to comment and surely, most don't, whatever they privately think?

Exactly. Hence why a post calling birthmarks "unfortunate" and comparing them to something the poster thinks is "really ugly" is quite unreasonable.

You're right, it is unreasonable; I didn't say either of those things unless in quote.

This sums up my thinking as well. Why spoil your body?

However, I'm well aware that it's none of my business so I'd never say anything. And luckily DP has a needle phobia so I don't have to worry on that front.

AtomicPumpkin · 12/11/2023 17:45

I find tattoos aesthetically displeasing, and they are difficult to remove and tend to look worse as the owner gets older. I've never seen anyone look better after getting a tattoo. But I would not assume that the person is 'thick or common'.

tuvamoodyson · 12/11/2023 17:58

As you get older and your skin gets wrinkly, they all just become a big, blue, indecipherable smudge…full sleeves etc just look dirty to me.

Malarandras · 12/11/2023 17:59

Just because. I don’t like Marmite either. Or marzipan. That’s how the cookie crumbles I guess!
