Oh and healthcare in the US is profit driven and despite an eye-watering cost per capita have some of the worst healtb outcomes in the developed world.

What @Neurodiversitydoctor said is right

I would just say don't trust your doctors too implicitly if you are paying them.

Even if you aren’t paying them… I went through multiple surgeries and told would never conceive… at all!! And did so multiple times naturally, though stonking number of miscarriages, I’m not the desert they made me out to be.

Doctors are people too, and they do not know it all, have faith, it will come right and lots of TLC for you @PP82.

I highly recommend spa days, fertility acupuncture and loving yourself all you can. 💐

I've been advised by doctors in both the public and private systems. I've been given basically the same advice by all of them, but due to my age the ones in the public system can only advise me or give me Clomid, as I'm too old to qualify for free IVF.

I can keep trying naturally for a while, and maybe try IVF with my own eggs (for various reasons we're still not sure if that's a goer), but realistically my greatest chances are with donor eggs, and if I want a second child it's almost certain that I'll need to use them. While a natural conception is still possible for me, I'm just delighted to have other options should that not work out.

I'm skeptical about acupuncture but love a spa day. Haven't been able to go since getting pregnant (was too worried about temperatures) but you've just reminded me that I can now book one.

Miamonthly · 12/11/2023 18:11

'Abroad' is not all sketchy and sinister.

Please read what I said…

“I’m sorry but I really am not convinced, particularly outside of the U.K. that fertility clinics are closely regulated enough, things have progressed faster than the legislation required. There are a lot of sketchy ethics (to my mind)”

I said particularly outside of the U.K., but did not exclude the U.K. or put it on some righteous pedestal.

The fact is the legislation takes time to come through, for anything, anywhere!! The technology available is outpacing the ability of policy makers to push through adequate legislation to regulate it.

And what is ethically right or wrong is a bit of a grey area, largely because a lot of the biology surrounding this is not fully elucidated, particularly in regard to the long term impacts for the donor and child.

While this remains in a private clinic domain as opposed to public health it does unfortunately open the way for these clinics to profiteer and gain ludicrously vast amounts of money from desperate people.

PP82 · 12/11/2023 18:17

I mean, ultimately I don't believe in any form of private healthcare, but I'm currently using it because that's what I need to do, and so far my experiences have been largely positive. Going forward, we'll see. Life isn't perfect, unfortunately, but I consider myself privileged to have the options that I have. Others aren't so lucky.

You can get your nails done or have a pregnancy treatment, even a head or foot massage could be relaxing. Obviously avoid the sauna.

The acupuncture was a turning point for me, I stopped miscarrying and it was just nice to go into this space every week and have a treatment, went the whole way through my pregnancy first time.

Check out BBT tracking as well. My cycle was a lot shorter than 28 days and sometimes fluctuated but the temp monitoring let me accurately assess when I was ovulating which was crucial as I couldn’t manage a lot of sex due to pain. Fun times.

Anyway, I had an encyclopaedia of conditions that should have prevented any pregnancy and quite clearly they were wrong!

I used to get my nails done religiously but stopped after reading 'It Starts with the Egg.' I know you can get phthalate free polish, but I prefer to avoid just to be on the safe side. I still get the odd polish free manicure. I had a very luxurious three day spa break just before I conceived. Maybe that helped? I also had an HSG the week before. That's more likely to have made the difference.

I use the easy@home ovulation tests and premom app. Know I should BBT track too but not sure how much difference it would make. I don't always ovulate on the same day in my cycle but I know by this point what my window is, and the month I got pregnant was the first time in a year that I didn't catch my peak, so thinking about abandoning testing altogether going forward and just dtd regularly in my fertile window. Worked for a friend of mine who was ttc for a long time. Abandoned the testing and got pregnant right away. It gets stressful over such a long period.

I have various quite specific reservations about the acupuncture but maybe I should be more open minded. Maybe I'll look into it.

I have two conditions that may be affecting my chances, but both are treatable so fingers crossed. Can I ask how old you were when you had your children? (Obviously don't answer that if you don't want to.)

Miamonthly · 12/11/2023 18:52

@PP82 you sound like me, I stopped colouring my hair for 14 months, looked horrendous.

Relaxing at the spa will have contributed, your body is not going to conceive whenever you’ve so much cortisol going round your system that it’s as if you’re being chased across the Serengeti by lions.

Ovulation sticks were crap and massively inaccurate for me. I’ll link you the sheets and thermometer I used.

I was early 30s after several surgeries. Now late and considering another but not letting the doctor panic get to me this time!

I only stopped colouring my hair once I got pregnant, even though my obstetrician said it was fine. I do look crap and am gonna make an appointment this week.

For various reasons keeping anxiety and cortisol levels down is a HUGE challenge for me but I'm getting better, plus I have private health insurance now so should be able to access better support (the public healthcare system where I live is brilliant for physical health, but lacking for mental health.) However from what I've read, the science on stress and infertility is inconclusive. Less stress can only be a good thing, but everyone constantly telling you to relax has the opposite effect! (They don't always tell you in a very relaxing way!)

I think the ovulation sticks were pretty accurate for me but I am massively bored of them so would be interested in a different approach, so please do send the links.

Good luck if you decide to go for another!

I had 5 rounds of IVF, the first 4 were unmitigated disasters, my egg quality was dreadful. I also read it’s starts to with the egg. I was so shocked. I took a very high dose of Q10 and cut out as many chemicals and plastic in my diet. The 5th round was amazing, I got 7 blastocysts. First one didn’t take but the next 2 that were implanted are now my 4 year old twins currently colouring. I’m now 43 and have 5 embryos frozen, but honestly I don’t have absolutely no intention of using them.

I’m certain all of these modern day chemicals contribute towards a massive increase in the need for fertility treatment

I absolutely agree. I changed all my beauty, household and cleaning products, plus got rid of plastic storage containers and utensils, and stopped eating processed food when I started ttc. Also started taking supplements (though for some reason my doctors keep telling me to stick to 200mg of Coq10, thinking of ignoring them and upping dose. How much did you take?)

What took me longer was buying a water filter and replacing cookware. About two months after that I conceived for the first time, though the pregnancy wasn't viable. I'm absolutely sure these chemicals, plastics above all else, are having a disastrous impact in lots of ways, including fertility, but awareness still seems to be so low.

heartofglass23 · 12/11/2023 19:41

People seem quite naive.

This won't have been a natural conception.

He will have come from a batch of frozen embryos from before the last one was born, likely even before they lost Rocky at 20 weeks in 2016.

There's a big difference from gestating a baby age 49 and conceiving one.

Do people really not understand biology.

These cases give ordinary women false hope of natural conception at older ages.

They may have taken 20+ rounds of IVF to have these later babies. Most people couldn't afford that many cycles of IVF.

I’m pretty certain I tool 600mg - it was the more pure form, ubiquinol Q10, it was quite pricey from what I remember. The pills were black gel type tablets. I think it was £80-£90 per month but I was only on them for about 6-8 months.

I was pregnant on and off for the 14 months so it was a long time for bad hair!!

You need a distraction, something a bit consuming and enjoyable - I took on a qualification, thought don’t know if that would work for you. Also maybe consider getting a dog or something fluffy to cuddle.

Many gynae conditions are linked to stress such as endometriosis so be mindful of that.

Why are you asking solely about married women?

Because the thread is about one.

Trez1510 · 12/11/2023 22:52

@blacksax

No.

The reference to (married) women was in relation to them finding themselves accidentally pregnant at that stage in life.

TR is not, by all accounts, someone who has found herself in the position of unplanned pregnancy.

Therefore, the question remains: why was the question regarding what women in their fifties should do in the face of an unplanned pregnancy do focused solely on married women?

ChannelNo19EDT · 13/11/2023 08:54

I'm single, I get it. If heaven forbid I'd got pregnant at this late vintage, it'd have been a very easy quick decision. If I had been married, wealthy, secure, had four adult children, well it would have been a slightly different decision that I would have run past at least one other person.

What is this, the Spanish Inquisition?

Nowhere near it.

Just looking for people to own their words.

It's pretty obvious where/when people can do this.

It's equally obvious when they can't.

Anyway, have a good day. 🙂

What do you mean, own their words?

I already explained once, but since it seems to have passed you by, I'll explain again. I used the term 'married woman' because that's what the thread is about - a married woman. If that explanation's not good enough for you, I can't help that. The hypothetical scenario I created was with a hypothetical woman in a similar scenario - ie: of a certain age and married. Fairly straightforward enough. Other long-term co-habiting relationships are available and we all know that, but that's not what the thread is about, and it was pretty obvious really. Don't know why you got such a bee in your bonnet about it.
