I hate my new car, I feel sick

It’s my fault, I was easily talked into it by the sales person.

It’s such a basic car and I’m embarrassed by it. It’s expensive and I want to cry

I mean I get driving a Merc is a bit embarrassing / vulgar but do get a grip.

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 12:55

Jesus, from the reaction here you’d think I said a 2024 Porsche.

Why would it be a wind up? Or me bragging? It’s a common car

So why are you embarrassed by it? Or is it too ‘common’ for you?

clary · 11/11/2023 13:23

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 13:15

I didn’t even get a car when I passed, I had to car share. My point was I wasn’t sure if it wa something an 18 year old boy would get as opposed to a woman in her late 20s that finally has a job that doesn’t severely underpay me.

I'm pretty sure most 18yo boys don't drive a £30k car. Honestly I do wonder what sort of world some people live in. Have a bit of empathy OP.

You could at least have posted that you weren't keen on your new car, was there time to take it back and what would people advise wrt an SUV?

Thatbloodyhedge · 11/11/2023 13:24

Have you got kids of driving age?

Wotsitfappe · 11/11/2023 13:25

I think if this isn't a joke you need to think about your priorities and sense of self. To be embarrassed by an expensive car because it's too basic really sounds insecure.

I also think you are very out of touch or very privlidged if you think this is what an 17 year old gets on passing their test. Now ths embarrassing

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/11/2023 13:26

Return it then OP. Ultimately I don't really notice or care what cars others drive, surely only enthusiasts do. Equating the car to someone's genuine social status or what job they may have is about ad daft as teenagers doing the same with branded vs unbranded and bullying each other for it. It means nothing, I'd just try and move past it and choose a car that suits your budget and lifestyle that you like the look of.

Thatbloodyhedge · 11/11/2023 13:26

You were talked into it????
Jeez
Grow up

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 11/11/2023 13:27

Fucking hell, and I thought I was being a dick*, about having a brand new Corsa as a courtesy car, when my Mini was in for repairs.
*I was being a dick

AliceOlive · 11/11/2023 13:27

You are kind of acting like a kid, though. Just go solve the problem and get what you want.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/11/2023 13:27

I was going to reply, but actually I can't be bothered.

My DC and their partners are mid to late 20s. All successful. I'd be embarrassed for them if they were wittering on about this.

I'd be worried for them if they had wasted money on a brand new A Class Merc. It isn't a kid's car BTW, my 87 year old mother has one.

Oh shit, I responded.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2023 13:28

It sounds like a nice car Confused

But fuck knows what you'd think of my 4 YO Skoda citigo, that is very basic. It doesn't even have electric mirrors, the back windows aren't electric either.

I'm not embarrassed about it, because it gets me from A to B and what more do you need?

Soooooootired · 11/11/2023 13:28

Just take it back - it’s something you will have for a long time

I bought a Nissan xtrail last year - initially regretted it as we had looked at the kia sorento which I loved but it seemed out of our price range on contract purchase. All used btw.

DP talked me into getting a loan to buy a car, bought the xtrail and realised that actually we could have bought the sorento. Love my car now though!!! Had no issues with it, it’s a great car and I think I’d struggle to get a car as reliable as it to be honest!

squashyhat · 11/11/2023 13:29

Will it get you from A to B and back again without breaking down? If so job done.

Baffledandalarmed · 11/11/2023 13:30

TBH your hysteria just makes me bloody glad you didn’t buy an SUV. People with the lack of grip you’ve demonstrated here shouldn’t have big cars ‘to feel safe.’

SUVs (and they should be proper 4x4 not the twatty Sevenoaks school run mum type ones) are needed for people who live in the country. End of. Not to feel safe.

Ballsbaill · 11/11/2023 13:30

Can anyone recommend a really basic cheap car... not a Merc A class.

I do actually need one.

funbags3 · 11/11/2023 13:30

If you're within the cooling-off period, just take it back. It's a very expensive mistake to make otherwise.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2023 13:30

And I'm a woman in my 50s in what is a well paid job in the real world that is a pittance by MN standards obvs.

GotNewHair · 11/11/2023 13:31

First You have to weather the trauma of not ‘even’ having a car when you passed your test then for this to happen too, and well within the cooling off period. It’s almost too much.

Wintersgirl · 11/11/2023 13:31

I have a better job so I thought I’d treat myself.

And you didn't think at any point to do research for your next car? Test drive it? Mull it over? Have a look at other models? Yeah this thread is bollocks....

Squirrelsbite · 11/11/2023 13:34

As long as you don’t drive it like the twat ( Mercedes) that was trying to hump my bumper this morning you’ll be ok

Hayleyoldnewwm · 11/11/2023 13:34

I had Merc A class last year and it’s definitely NOT a basic or embarrassing car!
its stylish and beautiful and i will forever regret it getting rid off it!

fulawitt · 11/11/2023 13:35

Did you pick the colour, are the seats leather? do they heat? what extra do you want? make your list before you return that one.

Lionoso · 11/11/2023 13:35

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 12:44

It’s a Mercedes A Class and I just think it’s basic and a car a parent would buy a child who just passed their test.

I assume this is a deliberately goady post. If it's not OP in the nicest way, get a grip.

Seaweed42 · 11/11/2023 13:35

Look, if consumer rights say you have a right to return then do it!

You can go back and buy it again in two weeks if you want.

Don't let your impatience beat you. It's a big decision buying a car so take your time, don't be afraid to 'bother' the sales person by doing a few test drives, and then a few more test drives!

Pretend the sales person doesn't exist. you are not there to make his feelings all nicey nicey so focus on the issue which is 'I need to buy a car that I am happy with, that I look forward to driving and I'm entitled not to be rushed into anything'
