Can you drink a whole bottle of Prosecco?

Most Friday nights I drink a bottle of Prosecco to myself. Sometimes I have a gin and Tonic as well, or a glass of wine. I often have a nice relaxed feeling but don’t feel drunk. Is this a bad sign? I feel like Prosecco is easier to drink and goes down quicker and easier than wine. I am going to do dry January and go until the end of lent, but am enjoying drinking what is probably too much at the moment….but it’s easy to tell myself this is my normal and rationalise it, so checking in with other people as to whether this is a worrying amount of booze….

No way. I'm too old to bounce back the next morning after more than half a bottle. I wouldn't drink Prosecco anyway. Also too old for all that fizz.

elliejjtiny · 11/11/2023 00:13

Also if I drank that much of anything in the evening I would be up in the night at least twice needing the loo.

febbabies2023 · 11/11/2023 00:13

Yep could quite happily do a bottle on a Friday and still feel okay! Probably helps me sleep to be honest. A bottle and a half and I'm probably a bit drunk though

You know you can buy small bottles that just contain one glass right? No need to buy and drink a full 75cl bottle (and the rest) yourself because 'DH/DP doesn't like it' when you could just have a couple of the little ones.

In answer to your concern I think a bottle plus extra is too much every week. Whether it's a problem or just a habit you've fallen into depends on how easily you can skip a week or two. Rather than saving yourself for dry January, start cutting down now and try to go without until December. If you're finding excuses not to, then you know you need to nip this in the bud before it becomes a bigger issue

You think drinking one bottle of Prosecco a week is a problem? Really? Tell me what it will do.

HikingforScenery · 11/11/2023 00:22

It’s good to see some more of the latter replies pointing out that it is indeed a lot of alcohol.

porridgeisbae · 11/11/2023 00:25

I've had 2 of the smallish 200ml bottles tonight so that could be worse. Think it's the first time this week I've had a drink.

Of course there's such a thing as too much, recommended units etc.

mrsfollowill · 11/11/2023 00:27

I think I'm the other end of the spectrum to most of mumsnet then! I can easy drink a bottle of fizz to myself- most Saturdays we have a Prosecco/Cava/Cremant /Champagne (my fav) - I let DH and DS (adult!) have a glass each then I normally finish it. Then have a few more other drinks. Glass of red or 2 with a steak. I am a smoker as well ShockShock so destined to an early death it seems! I'd better make a massive salad to compensate.

Hardly, a bottle of Prosecco only has 9 units in it!

NHS says 6 units in one session is binge drinking for women. 9 units is the equivalent of drinking 9 vodkas/gins/whiskies - I would say that's quite a lot, especially if also having wine too.

mondaytosunday · 11/11/2023 00:50

Sure. I could drink a bottle of wine and not feel drunk. But it's not healthy so I only do it a few times a month.

SleepPrettyDarling · 11/11/2023 00:53

I was dating someone last year and I got a big job, which I’d been really hoping to land. He said he’d come over with bubbles to celebrate. He arrived with a four pack of the small screw top Proseccos that have no fizz and just look forlorn. I was like 😕. There’s something indulgent about a bottle; often they’re only 10-11% and they don’t last. Not mad expensive either. Nothing wrong with enjoying a bit of sparkle in life.

mrsfollowill · 11/11/2023 00:57

@SleepPrettyDarling how bloody disappointing! Hope he an ex these days- that deserves a proper bottle.

PinkPantherPrat · 11/11/2023 01:00

Even my practically non-drinking mother got through a bottle of prosecco a couple of years back.

Usually she has one glass of wine or a brandy once every few months, so I did splutter a bit when she told me.

I'm no good, I can drink far too much at times.

afinethingindeed · 11/11/2023 01:02

I don't anymore but I could absolutely drink a whole bottle in one go.
I find putting a teaspoon in the bottle helps to keep the fizz :)

Newstaronthehorizon · 11/11/2023 01:03

No wonder the women in the UK are the biggest binge drinkers of the world.

Way way too much. It's also not good that your body has to deal with so much toxin.

Why not treat your body with care instead?

Ugzbugz · 11/11/2023 01:07

The utter drama on here! It's 750ml so most people on a night out would have 3 or 4 prosecco as a prosecco drinker and no one would batter an eye lid.

OP I happily drink that and more sometimes but one bottle would not give me a hangover, its Friday so enjoy!

Chirpinup · 11/11/2023 01:12

Well you can drink it but it will still give you the same increased risk as anyone for all the associated health problems.

MonsteraMama · 11/11/2023 01:17

Yeah I could easily drink a bottle and be fine.

Given the average lifespan of women in my family is 96 I'm hoping the prosecco will trim a few years off for me.

RubyRubyRubyRubay · 11/11/2023 01:18

Yes over an evening with crisps and food and chatting - 2 bottles between 2 friends - if we open a 3rd it can get a bit messy

Oh gosh me too.

I want to live to 70, 75 tops! It'll just be too sad losing people.

fluffi · 11/11/2023 07:14

Bottle of Prosecco over an evening is nothing, might be a bit sluggish the next day but not hungover. Wouldn’t do it every week but once or twice a week if our with friends / work and chilling at weekends is fine.

You can treat your body with care and drink a bottle of Prosecco per week, same as you can treat your body with care and have a pizza/take away once a week.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 11/11/2023 07:20

If you’re worried about your drinking I wouldn’t be taking comfort in others doing the same or worse than you. Cut back if you want to. Sure it’s not a crazy amount but it still counts as binge drinking.
I couldn’t drink a whole bottle and be fine. I imagine I’d be very drunk but I don’t drink much now.

EffinMagicFairy · 11/11/2023 07:20

Squiffy on one glass and a banging headache, never touch it.

FloweryPumpkin1 · 11/11/2023 07:29

I could until a couple of years ago (and did regularly) until I suddenly developed an aversion to alcohol. I sometime think I want it, buy a bottle and then feel unenthusiastic about it when the time comes to actually drink it, so I don't. I don't know why, the only thing that changed is I developed an autoimmune disease around the same time that I went off it. Alcohol is one of the things that can exacerbate my condition so maybe my body just knew.

Howtosolveit · 11/11/2023 07:33

I don't like Prosecco but could drink a whole bottle of good wine, easily, and am only a very occasional drinker. I am 5'11 though, which makes a difference. If I had it over the course of an evening with dinner I would be drunk, but not messy in any way. However I would feel ropey the next day though and don't think it's good for your health. The effects are really noticeable because I don't do it very often. When I used to drink more regularly the subtle hangover was less obvious. I think you should forget Dry January and just continue to enjoy your stash but at a more moderate pace. Make it into something you relish rather than feel bad about.
