My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

I like a Costco cafe Jacket Potato. Wish spud u like was still a thing.

Costco JPs are incredible

Team Spudulike. My first was the one in Harrow near the cinemas then the one upstairs in St Ann's shopping centre. Also discovered the ones in Bromley and Bluewater - all sadly closed now. It seems that 3 remain (Drake Circus Plymouth, Leeds White Rose shopping centre and Food Court Trafford Centre in Manchester).

I don't know why any company selling potatoes is struggling. Possibly the price put people off, and the gentrification of the fillings perhaps. My 'Jo Special' was always a potato with a bit of butter, hot baked beans on top then cold cottage cheese and chives on top of that.

When I visited the one in Bromley they wouldn't make it for me like that though, I had to have the cottage cheese in a separate pot and pour it over the beans myself. For some reason they weren't allowed (or the staff member serving me misunderstood the instructions) to put two fillings on top of each other. Perhaps there's a good reason but I couldn't think of it.

The incredible fluffy cottage cheese in the 2016 picture was from Longley Farm in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Happy days :)

We've got Jack's baked potato bar, they do baked potatoes or fresh cooked baguettes with the same fillings. No seats just a shop front so you get your potato in its takeaway box and off you go.

We love Jack's! I assume you're in the East Mids?

ehb102 · 10/11/2023 23:31

Tatties is still going in Cambridge.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/11/2023 23:33

I miss t'famous local market and Jacko's spuds... big black spud engine, garlic butter under, chili over, cheese on top and back in for 2 to melt. Mmmmmmmmmm.

It is, but I don’t think it’s the same. The previous location was the golden era. The present one gets mixed crits

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece @ScrambledSmegs @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g and all other sweetcorn lovers , there are two guys that walk up and down market st and St Anne's Square in Central Manchester selling hot corn , they have different size cups ranging from about £1.50 to £3 they have toppings like butter ( of course) pepper , chilli flakes, mayo and I think another sauce .
I had one with butter and pepper last weekend , bloody lovely!

Southlandssue · 10/11/2023 23:45

Does anyone else remember Pizzaland that did a small pizza cut in half either side of a jacket potato with coleslaw? Have I made this up?

Admittedly a few years ago, but had a very underwhelming experience in an Edinburgh mashed potato + sausage restaurant.

So did I but I had entirely forgotten about it until I read this post.

I’m laughing at the Spudulike menu posted upthread with ‘flavours that can only come from James Martin’ that includes butter, cottage cheese, and prawn cocktail. How I wish I had that man’s creativity.

We still have independent jacket potato shops in Sheffield! I used to like them - nothing against them now but there's a much better range of food than in my 80s childhood, so I wouldn't go to one now.

Point me in their direction please!

Glad to see Spud memories and spud fans around!

My son's girlfriend has now told me of a Garden Centre cafe that apparently does potatoes as big as footballs 🤩 so might try that tomorrow!

Oh that takes me back - when I lived in Islington we would go to the S&M cafe on Essex Rd for a hangover special. I don't think I ever went there when I wasn't feeling delicate Grin.

It's not there any more of course - even Essex Rd seems to be foodie-wankersville now.

CyberCritical · 11/11/2023 17:32

@GiveUsACoffee I am in East Mids. Jacks has been around forever, I'm 40 now and would go to Jacks for lunch back in the Olden days when I was 15 and a Saturday girl in Dunelm.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 11/11/2023 17:35

We have "Renegade Spudz" it's grim.

I'm not sure if it's still there but there was a stall in Lewisham Shopping Centre for years selling cardboard cups of corn. Never seen the appeal!

I saw a girl aged about 8 wandering round town with a cup of sweetcorn today. I was starving and quite envied her!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2023 18:27

TMI alert, but I have grounds to think I don't fully digest sweetcorn, so the idea of heating a whole big cup of the stuff really doesn't appeal. It's probably my least favourite vegetable. Give me the humble potato any day instead!

Thereisnoname · 11/11/2023 18:30

Nishky32 · 10/11/2023 19:52

Oh yes! Egg and chips/ sausage egg and chips.
Sophisticated it was not. Very busy on Friday and Saturday nights in the 90’s though

Was that near the hippodrome area, in big corner shop?
Remember going there in my student days ( or just another random chippy, they all seem similar after a few drinks)

No one fully digests sweetcorn, the inside is high in starch and is digested, the outside is nearly pure cellulose and we can't break that down so it exits the body the only way it can. DD was obsessed with sweetcorn when weaning and a toddler, her nappies were a joy.

Yes. Near Hippodrome!

Titsywoo · 11/11/2023 19:12

I sometimes go to Costco and get a jacket potato there. Huge potatoes with loads of filling for £2.99. Bargain!

MaryBeery · 11/11/2023 20:45

PingoDome · 10/11/2023 21:22

Chemistry labs, MaryBeery?

Nope, Physics at out the Cavendish. The practical sessions didn't finish til 6, so by the time I'd trekked back from there the canteen was normally closed, and Tatties was the nearest place to get hood food at a reasonable price.

No you didn't dream it , that was a Pizza Platter . DH and I used to go when we were living in Glasgow . The pizza was a small round one , jacket potato and a dollop of coleslaw (so you could pretend you were at least trying to get one of our 5-a-Day)

I did baked potatoes last night before I read this thread. We'd ordered a bag in our delivery , some were ok size but not big .
Did them in the microwave to start them then in the oven to go crispy .
With baked beans, cheese, onions, sour cream dip . <delish>
