My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

In Harrow there was a Spud U Like on the main road near the old cinemas. But there was also an outlet in the shopping centre food court, where I had one every day for lunch whilst working nearby (Beans & Cheese or Chilli & Cheese - yum!). We were spoilt!

Memories. You are so right

RumNotRun · 10/11/2023 22:30

There used to be a jacket potato van outside Boots in Broadmead, Bristol. They also did amazing steak baguettes. Downstairs in The Galleries was a frozen yoghurt store "I can't believe it's yoghurt" They were two of my favourite places when I went into town as a teenager 😂

Victoria Wood said "Is it Spud You Like?! Maybe its Spudoolickay!"

tolerable · 10/11/2023 22:35

"imagine all the 'tatoes"

Wayne and Waynetta Slob called their baby girl Spudulike (spud-yooo-lick-a)

It’s exotic!

I'm not sure if it's still there but there was a stall in Lewisham Shopping Centre for years selling cardboard cups of corn. Never seen the appeal!

Whaaat? This sounds amazing! One of the few things I can eat till I burst is Esquites, aka Mexican street corn. Also the cob version, Elotes. Genuinely one of the most inhaleable foods ever.

HiThereSupermouse · 10/11/2023 22:40

I remember Spud U Like. Loved their chilli and their coronation chicken too.

I also miss:

Wimpy. Very few of them around now.

Happy Eater.

I am too young to really remember Berni Inns but I had a peek at a menu on a retro food site and they seemed wonderful places. I enjoyed Victoria Wood's little number about them in The Day We Sang too.

I mourn the demise of so many good greasy spoon cafes. Did what they said on the tin and often delicious meals too.

We've got a local takeaway called the hot potato. The previous owners used to have every jacket potato filling imaginable. But it was taken over and changed into a kebab shop. I don't know why I liked it better selling jacket tatties. But they kept the name.

Assuming this is still current ...

So true that so called baking potatoes are just not big enough

bluebeardswife7 · 10/11/2023 22:46

I used to work of Oxford street and we used to get our baked potatoes from BHS. They used to start cooking the potatoes at dawn, then give you the butter and filling and in tiny pots so you could butter the potato first. Happy days

SpeedbirdSquawker · 10/11/2023 22:47

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I loved going to the one in Manchester on Piccadilly (where Subway is now). A shop called Shared Earth was next door and I bought a beautiful carved wooden box from there. I loved looking.royndnShared Earth and then going in Spudulike!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 10/11/2023 22:47

Tattie shops, Cranks and those roasted chestnut sellers with hot coal brasiers in London!

ButterfliesandMoths · 10/11/2023 20:05

I said to my husband the other day that Subway should start doing jacket potatoes. They've got loads of toppings there already so just need to add jackets to the menu. I'd be in there all the time.

Dragons Den that idea. I would if I had any money.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 10/11/2023 22:48

Oh this is taking me back to being a student in Aberdeen. Night out at the Triple Kirk then Tasty Tattie on the way back to halls!

shellyleppard · 10/11/2023 22:48

I remember it. First encounter was Edinburgh in the 80's......my taste buds were in heaven!!! Chicken curry and jacket potato bliss ❤️

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 10/11/2023 22:51

I’m pretty sure white rose in Leeds still has a spud you like.

Wolvesart · 10/11/2023 22:51

We had a local places called Tatties, it was brill.
Re large potatoes, our Coop sells god sized loose ones

ScottBakula · 10/11/2023 22:54

@GuitarGeorgina , I use to go in that one too , it's a subway now .

Up until last year (ish) there was one in manchester arndale food court .

There is a spud van on Oxford Road that is great.
Many years ago the council tried to get that and the fruit & veg stall moved / closed down because they 'were not in keeping with the area'
( for those of you that don't know manchester this area has 100s of take aways in the area and is prime student area )
Lot of the students and local businesses banded together to defend both small businesses, it was a landslide victory .
Both businesses are still going strong 😋

SpeedbirdSquawker · 10/11/2023 22:57

I think simple food like jackets are often the very best. I often fantasise about a good hour to myself in a quiet village cafe with a jacket potato for lunch!

dylanschicken · 10/11/2023 23:00

DD is 22 and we used to go to spud u like all the time, it only closed in 2019.

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 10/11/2023 23:02

Teafoot · 10/11/2023 19:31

Ooooh. Round here it was Olivers. Why did they end? I loved a jacket potato, prawn or egg mayo for me. You sometimes still see vans doing them at events, but what happened to the shops?

I loved Olivers! With their weird little mugs 😂 I also remember their chocolate flake cakes, which seemed so grown up to me as a 6/7(??) yr old

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/11/2023 23:03

I have a vague memory of spud u like (spudulikay) being mentioned in one of the Terry Pratchet Johnny Maxwell books. Don't think I'm imaging it.

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 10/11/2023 23:04

Spud u like was definitely a thing, there was one in Harrow, near the market that my sister and my mum went to all the time! We thought it was a real treat at the time! I miss those days so much!! And I miss spud u like massively thinking about it!!
