My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

Oh I miss spud u like!

Does anyone remember the stands that used to just sell sweetcorn with flavouring?!

Just pots of corn!

Magic Corn is still around - there's often a cart in The Mall Walthamstow, and I bought a cup from the one in Edmonton Green a few weeks ago.

The smell is its own advertisement!

Illbebythesea · 10/11/2023 21:26

I made a banging jacket today. Coleslaw and cheese. I DO miss spud u like! I used to get cottage cheese.

DangerousMouse · 10/11/2023 21:29

I remember being sooo disappointed by Spud U Like, they didn't have butter... a jacket potato shop without butter - what is that? I can't comprehend it.

The closure of Birmingham’s Mr Egg is an ongoing source if sadness 😂

I don’t think I’ll ever get over the loss of Mr Egg 🍳

HoneyButterPopcorn · 10/11/2023 21:30

What was the comedy where someone was going on about spu-du-li-keh?

Yes I remember them. Perfect fast food. There’s a baked potato shop just off at Martins lane. Almost a tender for a baked spud! 😳

Fat Jackets at Lakeside Thurrock.

Yes !

I just looked on the sitemap, doesn't look like its there now .

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 10/11/2023 21:32

Yes there was one similar here where I live and it was great, massive potatoes all crunchy on outside and so soft inside and you could get so many great toppings. When I lived in London and where I worked was also one of those food trucks that did Jacket Potatoes, think was a big thing in the 90's. A lot healthier than all the fast food crap now.

cocoapple · 10/11/2023 21:33

I loved spud u like! I think there’s still one open at the Trafford centre🤔

Vettrianofan · 10/11/2023 21:33

Yes I remember Spuds U Like from the 90s! I do miss it. Can remember getting a lunch there with DM years ago. Maybe a few times...

Oh I miss Spud U Like. We had one in the food court in Woking shopping centre.

Not reminiscing, but I was only thinking the other day how wild the trade would be at a unit in the City that just did festival style totally unhealthy toasted sandwiches I may have been slightly hungover

Edited

We've got On Toast in Gloucester. It's the perfect reasonably priced lunch - about 4 or 5 quid. Sometimes I think I should open a similar enterprise somewhere else - would be quite profitable in a university town in term time.

WrinkledCucumber · 10/11/2023 21:34

Does Spud U Like not exist anymore??!! 😢 I haven’t been for at least 5 years but I always used to have cheese and coleslaw on mine and DH would always have prawn cocktail, so 😋 😋 😋

itsgettingweird · 10/11/2023 21:35

West Quay on Southampton had a jacket potato shop. That's where my love for steaming hot jackets and cold egg mayo sprang from Grin

itsgettingweird · 10/11/2023 21:37

And I still buy giant potato's.

Actual fruit and veg shops and butchers get some great sized ones in. Cook in the air fryer like a gem!

I know someone who used to work in one, she used to shag her boyfriend on the sacks of spuds. Put me right off eating in there 🤮

I know you posted this ages ago, @userxx, but it gave me a much-needed laugh, so thank you so much Grin

Was it the Haymarket area, Newcastle?

A few remaining ones are mentioned upthread if any are within your reach.

emummy · 10/11/2023 21:38

Yes @Boredatthemoment ! I had a lovely cheese & mango chutney tattie there a few months back - the ‘Richard Herring’.

Omg the sweetcorn pots🤤 They still have a stand in the shopping centre near me and it’s the first thing I can smell when I walk through. I want sweetcorn now🫣

WearyAuldWumman · 10/11/2023 21:40

There was a Spud U Like in the Waverley Centre, Edinburgh until a year or so ago!

DelightfullyDotty · 10/11/2023 21:41

Victoria Wood called Spud U Like “Spudoolicay” in one of her routines. I had an argument with my boyfriend in Birmingham in about 1992 because I said “Oh look it’s a Spudoolicay!” and he didn’t know what I was talking about. I felt all embarrassed and went in a huff😆

Tommythetortoise · 10/11/2023 21:42

Yes @LittleMooli!! I remember going on a school trip to Chester and traipsing through Spud U Like to see the Roman remains. Many moons ago though

BarqsHasBite · 10/11/2023 21:46

When I was about 5 we were meant to go in a family ski trip to Aviemore in Scotland. But I got measles so my dad took my sister.
When they came back she told me that they ate every night in the Baked Potato Train. It added insult to the injury of me not being able to go skiing.

scotstarstrikestwo · 10/11/2023 21:48

The main shopping street in Lerwick had a takeaway called 'tatties and point'...ready to go beautiful baked tatties with loads of different fillings available. Absolutely lovely, especially as 1am after a night out!

Yes! We used to go for chips and egg before going clubbing every Saturday. Can't believe it's now closed, how can an egg and chip place go out of business, what's not to love.

GardenGuardian · 10/11/2023 21:49

When I was doing my A Levels back in the later 90s, I and the girl who sat next to me in French came up with a business plan for Stud-U-Like, which would I guess have have been the flip side of Hooters if we’d ever heard of that… The name was definitely a rip off of the potato place!
(Hi Jill if you see this!)

MsInterpret · 10/11/2023 21:49

There used to be a great one at the top of Cockburn St in Edinburgh. Prosaically named 'The Baked Potato Shop' 🤣
