My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

There's a Ted's in Sutton Coldfield (north Birmingham). Always busy. Just sells potatoes, none of your fancy baguettes.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2023 08:13

I remember the local spud shop, and some TV comedian - Victoria Wood? - saying she always wanted to pronounce the name as if it were foreign, e.g. Greek, Spud-you-lickay. 😂

Of topic Belfast briefly had a shop selling only potato crisp sandwiches.

CHEESEY13 · 14/09/2024 10:50

A former neighbour - who was a dead ringer for Hyacinth Bucket - righteously insisted that "baked" potatoes were common. "Jacket" potatoes was the correct term

Snobbish cow!

Spudulike. Don’t know why they didn’t survive. Such a great fast food .

Yes I'm tired of getting teeny tiny potatoes from the supermarkets. Usually the 4 in a bag ones. They are far too small to make a meal now.

That said I got loose ones in Tesco today and they are large so hooray.

Don't know what's going on with potatoes.

I think I do remember the shop you are talking about. I bet they had amazing fillings

The worst potato growing season in living memory is what’s going on. Due to climate change. 😞

I used to love a Spud U Like potato with garlic butter and chili con carne.

I think the one I went to was in Harrow or Watford. Somewhere around there, anyway.

And yes, agree that you just don't get the massive potatoes in the shops any more. Baking potatoes my arse! I want to eat them, not play marbles with them.

Yes there was one in Harrow, the St Ann’s shopping centre, upstairs, used to go in my college days. Loved it

Oh yes,I remember SpudULike! There was one in the town near me. Can't remember when it disappeared, mid 90s? I used to love the prawn cocktail filling, also the tuna mayo and sweetcorn one. I was gutted when it closed down and became a Poppins restaurant.

AutumnCrow · 14/09/2024 21:06

I had the mussels filling once on my potato at the Spud U Like on the Haymarket in Newcastle. I was sick as a dog.

Tbf to Spud U Like, I was very very drunk.

@Nishky32 I frequented Mr Egg 1994 to 1999 :) the toilets were permanently out of order.

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/09/2024 22:00

There is a cafe near our work that we often all pile into which is mostly baked potatoes with various fillings.
marvellous and is the best value lunch in town for £4.50 for a spud and a Diet Coke! Extra 50p for a homemade cookie.

I miss Spudulike. It was one of my favourite lunch stops. BHS did some fantastic jacket potatoes as well. My favourite fillings were chilli con carne and the curry. Yummy.

When I last visited Leicester there was a baked potato shop there but sadly none where I am now.

Remember Wayne and Waynetta Slob on Harry Enfield naming their baby?

”We want to call her Spud-u-like-a”

“No. It’s pronounced SpudYOOlica. It’s exotic!”

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/09/2024 07:09

Yes.😂

anxietyaardvark · 15/09/2024 07:17

There was one on the platform at St Pancras in the days when the station was still old and sooty inside.

You could eat your spud amongst pigeons and diesel fumes on very cold red metal chairs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2024 07:49

I have fond memories of Victoria Wood saying she always felt that Spud - U - Like should be pronounced as if it were in some foreign language, so Spudyoulickay. 😂

HoneyButterPopcorn · 15/09/2024 16:46

There was one not all that long ago off st martins lane. It was bloody lovely - huge potatoes or sweet potatoes with yummy fillings. I love a jacket potato.

I remember a spud u like in Notting Hill.

Now what was the comedy programme with a character going on about 'spu-d-you-li-key'?

Elderflower14 · 15/09/2024 17:06

Saw one a few years ago at Westfield Stratford.

JoBrodie · 15/09/2024 18:32

There seems to be only one SpudULike remaining in the UK - it's in Leeds. The last time I looked there were 4. I think they tried to gentrify the potatoes a bit with fancy fillings, but the market appears to have resisted the accompanying price increase https://spudulikebyjamesmartin.com/find-us/?radius=999

Spudulike. Don’t know why they didn’t survive. Such a great fast food .

Because it was incredibly expensive and shit.

When you can go tk the local potato van and spend £8 why would you spend £18 in spudulike for far less?

Oh this is taking me back to being a student in Aberdeen. Night out at the Triple Kirk then Tasty Tattie on the way back to halls!

Was that the shop near the St Nicholas centre? If so I remember it well, they used to have smoked sausage as one of their fillings which I loved.

They opened a Mr Potato Had in my town last year but I think it has closed now. It sold tatties and toasties. I think it closed because of poor location, no parking except pay and display and very limited footfall.

Gingerkittykat · 15/09/2024 19:36

Here is the menu for the new Spud U like by James Martin and it looks shite, only 6 fillings and one of them is butter, no cheese and low salt and sugar beans as a side.

It doesn't have prices either, I bet it is really overpriced.

I would love to visit Spudman's van. It has good hearty potatoes with a nice range of fillings.

I hate the fact he puts cheese on the tatties before the beans though, that's just wrong!.
