My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

In Harrow there was a Spud U Like on the main road near the old cinemas. But there was also an outlet in the shopping centre food court, where I had one every day for lunch whilst working nearby (Beans & Cheese or Chilli & Cheese - yum!). We were spoilt!

I used to visit the one in the St Anne's Centre in Harrow regularly when I worked there too haha! Tuna/Mayo/Spring Onion was my go-to!!

Another one who used to visit the St Ann’s one! Miss it 😢

There was one at Lakeside (Thurrock) up near the McDonalds at Debenhams end , but it wasn't there long . And a baked potatoe shop on the upper level Food Court (cannot remember the name )

Does anyone remember Sweenet Todds ? They did huuuuge potatoes and sour cream. There was one at Bath and one of Tooley Street in London Bridge , late 90s

used to be a spud u like in Halifax opposite one of the nightclubs used to do a roaring trade when the club turned out about 2am

In Edinburgh the Tempting Tattie is ace, been going since I was a student in the 90s

There used to be a Spud-u-Like in the shopping centre at Waverley Station. It had a fantastic food court altogether. I was so disappointed at how dilapidated it had become when I was last there, probably more than 10 years now. It was one of my favourite places to go for lunch.

There was a Spud U Like between Edinburgh Uni's Pollock Halls and the main university campus back in the 80s. I lived above it!

Isometimeswonder · 10/11/2023 20:58

The best Spudulike was cheese and sweetcorn. The potato was scooped out and mixed with sweetcorn and cheddar and then put back and baked more.
I make it myself with Worcester sauce cos it's flippin delicious

StopWastingTimeOnMN · 10/11/2023 20:59

Oh yes!

The one in Newington, Edinburgh c. 1992. We used to walk down from Pollock halls to have one as a treat (and in second year lived just round the corner). My go to was cottage cheese, no butter if being ‘good’ and cheese, pineapple and onion if being decadent - I’m not sure any thing has ever tasted as good…

Fat Jackets at Lakeside Thurrock.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/11/2023 21:00

I went into a Spud U Like when I first moved over here because I was baffled by the whole concept of a food place dedicated to jacket potatoes. Grin

(I left again without ordering anything as the fillings were not at all appealing.)

ElizabethAA · 10/11/2023 21:01

I think James Martin bought spud u like not so long ago

BCBird · 10/11/2023 21:01

Was a gourmet meal for me as a student in Chester. Egg mayonnaise and cheese filling was the best. This was 35 years ago.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/11/2023 21:03

Back at the end of the 80s/early 90s I worked in Shepherd's Bush and regularly went to the Spudulike on Shepherd's Bush Road. Loved it.

Oh, Tatties. Be still my beating heart. Garlic mushrooms and cheese were my favourite filling. Also in Cambridge a potato van outside Woolworths which I got my lunch from at least twice a week.

There is a James Martin Spudulike in York Designer Outlet Village.

That’s the potato van of my youth, outside Woollies in Cambridge😍

Loved the smell so much, jacket potatoes are pure nostalgia for me.

NoMoreCapsLock · 10/11/2023 21:11

There was a Spud U Like in Notting Hill in that road between the tube station and Portobello Road.

MissIndecisive2023 · 10/11/2023 21:13

Ha! I had the same conversation with my son this week - he couldn't believe it either about Spud U Like. It was brilliant!

I am craving jacket potato dinners now. Cheese, beans and lots of butter.

I think Edinburgh still has a few baked potato shops, including The Baked Potato Shop

LadyHag · 10/11/2023 21:16

We have a proper jacket sud van at our local market, been there decades, football sized spuds, leathery skin, slab of butter on, with either cheese, tuna mayo, chilli or beans.

Bloody gorgeous!

whataretherulesss · 10/11/2023 21:18

Potatoes are small this year because we had such a rubbish summer. That's also why they're more expensive atm.

Edinburgh apparently has a mashed potato restaurant now too, and I have to say I am tempted to trek into the city to try it.

Jellycats4life · 10/11/2023 21:19

I’m surprised a 22yo doesn’t ever recall seeing a Spud U Like. They only went under in 2019.

TitsInAbsentia · 10/11/2023 21:19

Used to visit a spud u like almost every saturday! Loved the little spoon with the spud man on the end.

PingoDome · 10/11/2023 21:22

MaryBeery · 10/11/2023 20:44

Ooh it's moved. It used to be opposite the entrance to Parker's Piece by the University Arms hotel. Absolutely massive spuds, and it was my go to treat when I'd missed halls because I'd had practicals that afternoon.

Chemistry labs, MaryBeery?

Wow is that still there? I used to go a lot when I worked in the offices that are now the Leonardo hotel in Jeffrey Street.
