My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

Yes there's a spud u like by James Martin in a shopping centre in Leeds!

I commented on the fact there was no cheese when we passed it!

Loved Spudulike, perfect half healthy lunch and yes, enormous potatoes!

There used to be more baked potato portable sellers as well, with their lovely baking potato aroma. Haven’t seen one for years!

Many years ago there was a bloke on my local high street with a kind of oven on a barrow-type spud thing - was my favourite Saturday afternoon treat. Lots of butter, salt and coleslaw for me.

My youngest DC's godmother ran one for decades! Best place ever. She only closed when the lease ran out and the council knocked the little parade of shops she was in down.

LittleMooli · 10/11/2023 20:11

There was a spud you like in Chester or York (sorry can't remember which) and if you asked they would lead you down some stairs to see some random roman architecture.

AmandaHoldensLips · 10/11/2023 20:12

Didn't Brian Harvey of East 17 run himself over after eating 3 baked potatoes with tuna mayo? Not sure if they were from Spudulike though.

LittleMooli · 10/11/2023 20:12

I can't help but find "Spud U Like by James Martin" an amusing name.

Newestname002 · 10/11/2023 20:12

I do remember Spudulike. My firm's staff canteen, many years ago had a couple of large black baked potato machines that baked the flesh a lovely creamy texture with sweetish flavour and the skins crispy. Utterly delicious with various toppings of your choice and, if I was feeling a bit guilty about all those carbs, a side salad with vinaigrette. Any left over cold baked potato is great as potato salad. 🌹

We still have one in Cardiff!

I said to my husband the other day that Subway should start doing jacket potatoes. They've got loads of toppings there already so just need to add jackets to the menu. I'd be in there all the time.

Baguette Express used to do anything you like on a potato, or in various roll options for £2 (I bet it's more than that now. There used to be one on every street in Edinburgh but it looks like most have closed)

motherofawhirlwind · 10/11/2023 20:16

Wasn't it Spud-you-li-ka?

Floopyfloop · 10/11/2023 20:16

I can’t believe there are so many wimpy burger bars still open. Our last Welsh one was in Porthcawl and that was a blast from the past!

We still have one in Cardiff!

Do we?!

I remember the one in St David’s changed to massive plates and glasses that didn’t fit onto the trays very well not long before it shut down.

where is it now?

Lynseylou1 · 10/11/2023 20:19

It's still going in the Trafford centre it's the only eatery that never has a long line but I'm not surprised given the extortionate prices they charge for a jacket spud! I did like them however not wanting to pay nearly 10 quid for one

Cheepcheepcheep · 10/11/2023 20:20

Oh I miss Spud U Like. We had one in the food court in Woking shopping centre.

Not reminiscing, but I was only thinking the other day how wild the trade would be at a unit in the City that just did festival style totally unhealthy toasted sandwiches I may have been slightly hungover

There’s one in plymouth

First thought when i saw this thread was there one in Drake Circus still

Xmasbaby11 · 10/11/2023 20:21

We still have independent jacket potato shops in Sheffield! I used to like them - nothing against them now but there's a much better range of food than in my 80s childhood, so I wouldn't go to one now.

That's what he claimed. Many suspected other substances besides potatoes with tuna mayo and cheese were involved...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2023 20:27

I remember Spudulike. There was one at Clapham Junction that I walked passed between home and the station to get to school. Girl in my year worked there when she left school.

When I was at university the building that I had most of my lectures in also had a baked potato canteen (for some reason)...they had two of those black baked potato ovens and the potatoes were HUGE. I think the toppings were fairly basic - grated cheese, cottage cheese, baked beans - but they were cheap and delicious, I wish I"d bought one more often

pinkglass9 · 10/11/2023 20:32

@HideTheCroissants this is only recent though isnt it? I clearly remember 2nd jan i went shopping and saw the sign and fancied one!
