My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!

Was just reminiscing about massive jacket potatoes (where have all the big ones gone??)

Which led to pondering the demise of Spud U Like 😭😭😭😭😭

My 22 year old son didn't believe a shop that only sold jacket potatoes ever existed until Google provided evidence.

Anyone else remember Spud U Like?

Or got memories of other eateries that have been retired to memory lane?

We still have independent jacket potato shops in Sheffield! I used to like them - nothing against them now but there's a much better range of food than in my 80s childhood, so I wouldn't go to one now.

I was just about to mention there use to be a great one on the moor when I worked in that area maybe 13 years ago

Such a good idea wasn’t it. Healthier than burgers and way ahead of its time.
I think Wayne and Waynetter ruined it.

Picklewicklepickle · 10/11/2023 20:36

Me neighbour used to run one of those little jacket potato vans! To be fair it was my staple lunch when I had a Saturday job in a clothes shop in the city centre in the late 90s. I still order jacket potato with cheese and beans in cafes now 😅

Allywill · 10/11/2023 20:36

tell him about the egg and potato shop in newcastle - yup just sold eggs and potatoes.

YouJustDoYou · 10/11/2023 20:38

We had a local stall that only sold jackie tatties. It went out of business pretty quick sadly :(

Tulipvase · 10/11/2023 20:38

I seem to remember that a town/village near me (Oxfordish) had a spud pub!

Pushkinini · 10/11/2023 20:39

I loved a Spud U Like!

Clingfilm · 10/11/2023 20:40

Why has nobody mentioned the 'spork'?

HideTheCroissants · 10/11/2023 20:40

pinkglass9 · 10/11/2023 20:32

@HideTheCroissants this is only recent though isnt it? I clearly remember 2nd jan i went shopping and saw the sign and fancied one!

The last time I saw it there was in the Spring. I go several times a month. January was nearly a year ago and some of the food stalls in the food court only last a few months.

Tisfortired · 10/11/2023 20:40

Loved spud u like. I used to get a meal deal which was beans and cheese jacket potato, Pepsi and 2 slices of garlic bread 😋

2gorgeousboys · 10/11/2023 20:41

30 years ago I used to buy a jacket potato with cauliflower cheese from an independent market stall on my lunch break from my Saturday job in Woolworths. Those were the days and I've never had jacket potatoes as tasty since.

Ponderingwindow · 10/11/2023 20:42

We have a place near us that still does giant potatoes. You can tell where they splice them together though to get them to the right size. Still delicious.

the toppings are really limited though compared to the old days

pinkglass9 · 10/11/2023 20:43

@HideTheCroissants i wish i got one now! im in south east london and rarely go bluewater. Makes me fancy one right now! 🤤

saveforthat · 10/11/2023 20:43

Have a look at the jackets in my Tesco on line delivery. One of them is the size of a new potato.

My son didn't believe me about a Jacket Potato shop!
Justcallmebebes · 10/11/2023 20:43

I worked in one many, many moons ago

MrsSeveride · 10/11/2023 20:44

In Harrow there was a Spud U Like on the main road near the old cinemas. But there was also an outlet in the shopping centre food court, where I had one every day for lunch whilst working nearby (Beans & Cheese or Chilli & Cheese - yum!). We were spoilt!

I used to visit the one in the St Anne's Centre in Harrow regularly when I worked there too haha! Tuna/Mayo/Spring Onion was my go-to!!

Just found that Tatties is STILL OPEN.

Ooh it's moved. It used to be opposite the entrance to Parker's Piece by the University Arms hotel. Absolutely massive spuds, and it was my go to treat when I'd missed halls because I'd had practicals that afternoon.

CesareBorgia · 10/11/2023 20:44

@CantFindTheBeat Spud U Like is alive and kicking in the food court of the White Rose Centre, Leeds.

However, they have recently adopted wooden cutlery and it's impossible to cut the skin of a jacket with a wooden knife.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 10/11/2023 20:45

Spudulike did the BEST garlic bread

Big fan of the chilli too

I miss spudulike but I remember the prices seemed to shoot up just before it shut

Medusaismyhero · 10/11/2023 20:46

Upstairs in the Marlands Centre in Southampton... God I loved that place 😭

GuitarGeorgina · 10/11/2023 20:48

Spud U Like Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester.

Palace of dreams.

Alovleyjacket · 10/11/2023 20:50

Beeston Nottingham, we have a van - way better than spud you like - have to get there early on a Saturday or they sell out

grumpycow1 · 10/11/2023 20:51

There’s an Italian deli style cafe near Holborn which does amazing jackets! Loved Spud U like too

BloodandGlitter · 10/11/2023 20:51

Bulwell in Nottingham has a potato van too! He does a roaring trade. There's usually one or two in the city centre too.

ladycarlotta · 10/11/2023 20:52

I was a big fan of Tatties about 15 years ago when I was a student.

You used to be able to get a baked spud everywhere though! Back when it was all little caffs and not chains like Pret. I sound ancient saying this but surely as recently as the early noughties! Baked potato, ham egg and chips, probably a lasagne or a moussaka depending on the extraction of the owners. It's not like that any more! My 4yo asks to go for sushi! We've forgotten the old ways!
