Law Society of England and Wales spokesperson said:

“The government’s proposals are lacking detail, appear ill-conceived and are likely to be a false economy.

The ones who will suffer will be the public, who can no longer get legal aid when they need it most. Victims of domestic abuse seeking protection for themselves and their children, families facing homelessness and people with mental ill health and other disabilities will be left to fend for themselves.

The impact of depriving people of advice and representation is almost always counterproductive because of the knock-on costs to the taxpayer caused by the failure to nip problems in the bud, halt misconceived applications to court, and ensure that court cases are run efficiently.

This is a seriously detrimental step for citizens’ access to justice and potentially increases the burden on taxpayers.”

I'd really like to read the impact assessment of this policy.

L1ttledrummergirl · 16/11/2023 21:16

Do you really think they've bothered to do an impact assessment?

bombastix · 16/11/2023 21:25

VimtoVimto · 16/11/2023 20:19

It’s almost as if they want a revolution.

You say that. But I don't think people will protest this at all in any number. You will get what the Conservatives call the "do gooders" complaining. That will not stop it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/11/2023 22:24

Gosh. How unlike them.

Mrs Braverman said that to prevent further legal challenges, the PM's proposed legislation should ignore "the entirety" of the Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as other relevant international obligations, including the Refugee Convention. This would prevent migrants bringing legal challenges that their rights have been breached, she said.

Wtf. I really am scared this country is turning into some kind of dictatorship. Yes let's just ignore all international law that stops us doing whatever we want. Nothing to see here.

Suella Braverman

Suella Braverman: No flights before election under PM's Rwanda plan

"Tinkering with a failed plan" will not achieve the government's aims, the former home secretary says.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67446101

AdamRyan · 16/11/2023 22:57

Oh she's such an idiot
Mrs Braverman also argued the UK must take practical steps to improve Rwanda's asylum system, for example by embedding UK observers or independent reviewers of asylum decisions there.
Yep. We have loads of people who can process asylum claims, we can spare a few for Rwanda I'm sure Shock

This really makes no sense to me at all. Surely they must see that noone thinks the government have the money to spunk on sending a few immigrants to Rwanda??

lljkk · 16/11/2023 23:08

Braverman is not Johnson. Braverman is abrasive & lacks wit, charisma or charm in front of telly. She makes Hilary Clinton look like a cuddly charming witty funny doll.

How can Tories rally round Braverman as posited future leader? Sunak's policies depress me but even I can tell he's amusing & personable and oozes an air of slick competence. I know people who would like Braverman for being a hardass, but with zero charm apparent and a track record of obvious screw-ups, she won't get anywhere with majority of voters.

L1ttledrummergirl · 16/11/2023 23:13

@lljkk you give Sunak far too much credit.

bombastix · 16/11/2023 12:37

Can we all note that Rwanda has capacity to consider 200 yes, 200 hundred asylum seekers.

All you naysayers just don't see the difference they could make here. It is totally worth it to override your constitutional precedent, undermine your judiciary and create further division for this. It is.

And definitely worth abandoning human rights for.

Passepartoute · 16/11/2023 23:47

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/11/2023 18:33

I couldn’t get share tokens to work the other day but I came on to post this which is the same thing from the government site.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/employment-support-launched-for-over-a-million-people

Looks like workfare is back as an option too.

No legal aid either. So if you're wrongly deprived of benefit by some Job Centre idiot you will thereby lose the right to any help to challenge it. And, judging by the success rate of appeals to the Benefits Tribunal, you have at least a 62% chance of some Job Centre idiot making the wrong decision.

Catch 22 lives.

Because of course sending a message to other countries that we will ignore Treaty obligations in order to send all of 200 asylum seekers to Rwanda for no sensible purpose whatsoever is going to play really well internationally, isn't it?

Whoever gave her a law degree should be hanging their heads in utter shame.

Hmm - employing, say, 10 people to go and live in Rwanda as observers of the asylum system - surely that's got to be worth a salary of at least £50K each plus on costs plus their travel, housing and subsistence costs, plus all the admin, management, training and recruitment costs involved. That's going to add at least another million a year to the money they've already wasted on this nonsense.

I'm seriously wondering whether she'd actually quite well in mental health terms. The sheer batshit irrationality of all this is just staggering.

bombastix · 17/11/2023 00:12

Oh no. Suella is offering to take it on and run it. That's been something she's wanted for ages. Her Rwanda dream.

Not a joke. I am serious

IClaudine · 16/11/2023 18:43

They really are disgusting aren't they? Picking on the most poor and vulnerable. Hopefully none of it will happen because they will be booted out. They are deluded though, employers don't exactly queue up to employ people who are disabled.

I expect a few threads will pop up on this.

They're Tories. It's what they do.🤷‍♀️. Fortunately, they're going soon.

In the meantime we'll just have to put up with their nasty rhetoric and complete inability to repair the damage they've done to the country.

Dicks!Angry

I doubt they've done any kind of assessment.🙄

It just a load of bollocks, spouted to keep the Gbeebies viewers quiet after they binned Suella. Talk shite, do fuck all is their strategy until they're voted out.

IClaudine · 17/11/2023 02:42

Talk shite, do fuck all should be emblazoned on Rishi's! lectern.

(I have covid and can't sleep for coughing, hence being up and reading MN at daft o'clock).

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/11/2023 02:57

Covid sucks. Hope you feel better soon.Brew

I get to drink wine and stay up late on Thursdays as DS2 is with his dad. Or I get to sleep for 16 hours uninterrupted. Depends on how my week has gone.Grin

IClaudine · 17/11/2023 02:59

Ta. Enjoy the rest of your night off!

Zonder · 17/11/2023 07:05

What really pees me off about Sunak is that he will make all this mess and strip the country bare, then bugger off to the States where he will never know the impact of his utterly self-serving decisions.

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2023 07:30

“If parliament were to pass legislation the effect of which was to reverse a finding of fact made by a court of competent jurisdiction, that would raise profound and important questions about the respective role of the courts and parliament in countries that subscribe to the Rule of Law."

Please stop worrying about all these trivial things. In an effort to improve things for everyone, a government nonentity has been wheeled out this morning to demand fair treatment for war memorials. Apparently they are being desecrated by lefty nutters who climb on them occasionally. And police fail to arrest them. So positing changing the law to protect our memorials. The radio presenter could barely suppress his laughter.

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2023 08:12

Times reporting that Hunt is looking to cut inheritance tax rates (worth £7 bin paid by 3.76% of estates), taxes for small businesses and extend full expensing. Manifesto to include proposal to abolish inheritance tax.

And then says - The tax cuts are expected to be funded in part by cuts to benefits.

Will go down well in some quarters. Won't be considered enough by Truss fans etc.

Just why?

Is this a reward to donors before they are booted out?

Merrymouse · 17/11/2023 08:29

Maybe it’s just a trap for a future Labour government?
