Oh joy, so we're back to breaking the law in a specific and limited way, or whatever it was!

If I remember right it doesn't count if you only break the law for 20 minutes.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/11/2023 22:13

Can you have a constitutional crisis if you don’t have a written constitution?

Or there’s cake.

Now this might be mega controversial and I'm sorry if it is... but are people really as bothered about 'the boats' as the government think they are?

Honestly, it's really not my priority, paying my mortgage, and heating my home, and feeding my family is my priority. Granted 'the boats' aren't ideal, but they're not my number one priority. I'd like the asylum system sorting so it's not costing a fortune for all those in the backlog, but the government think it's a real vote winner...

IClaudine · 15/11/2023 22:16

Bloody hell. What a binfire for both parties today.

Sunak showing his true self. The mask has slipped. He will do anything to cling on to power, including ripping up all our rights and protections. Can we use the 'f' word now about these bastards? Because that is how they are acting. No ifs, no buts.

I don't think they are. It is just a knuckle dragging minority who have it at the top of their wish list. The sort who make incomprehensible phone calls to LBC.

No. It’s niche and if it does come up it tends to be a long way down the list of priorities IIRC.

But then nobody was bothered by being part of the EU in 2015 so that doesn’t necessarily mean much.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/11/2023 22:22

A lot of the time it’s about the way polling questions are asked too. A straight ‘do you think we should stop the boats’ is likely to get more people saying ‘yes’ than more nuanced questions.

I am sure that framing the questions and the lead up questions can get you the answer you are looking for*

TokyoSushi · 15/11/2023 22:27

Yes agree, 'Do you think we should stop the boats' most people would say yes.

'Is stopping the boats more important to you than sorting out the economy/NHS/Housing/Cost of Living/Education/Transport etc etc' - Well actually no!

TokyoSushi · 15/11/2023 22:28

Forgot my ? there!

Notonthestairs · 15/11/2023 22:32

Never mind the cost of living, they are cutting inheritance tax next week!

I'm sick to death of these idiots. I hope they're gearing up for the Last Battle in which they all fight one another to the last one standing. Who can then be invited to bugger off and form a party of one. No bar is too low for them. Dreadful people.

Oh excellent. A tax that only 7% of the wealthiest estates pay. That’s going to help no end, isn’t it?

IClaudine · 15/11/2023 22:49

Re: Labour. Why the bloody heck didn't Starmer allow a free vote on the ceasefire question? If he not careful he will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and then we will be really screwed.

This coverage is quite interesting because its conspicuous in how the press are treating Starmer as if he's the next PM already. Still he will survive it

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/11/2023 23:01

He’ll survive it. it’s just indicative of Labour’s incredible knack doing something stupid while all the focus is on the Tory party.

It’s probably not the worst example but it does seem to happen regularly.

bombastix · 15/11/2023 23:17

My mother once remarked that the Labour Party was like a dog with fleas; it couldn't help but scratch itself.

I haven't seen the newspapers, but a comment on r4 newspaper review that in some papers Starmer's troubles were mostly absent.

In other news two polls are out since the weekend. Too soon probably to suggest a pattern, but...

Totally agree. However, it's appealing to those voters who are a bit iffy about brown people, so it is purely designed as a pre GE vote winner, which is why they keep saying 'it's what the people want'. It's a slogan and a panic about an impending GE.

No, they don't. They want their school buildings sorted, financial security and cut the ruddy NHS waiting lists for ops, amongst other things.

bombastix · 16/11/2023 07:13

@jgw1 - yes this is now consistent and has been for a year. Strong performance by Labour.

Edited

I would suggest that there is a significant number of conservatives who would like to think of themselves as compassionate people who are not racist in the Shire counties. The Tories can't win a General Election without securing those seats, but the return to stop the boats, which went so well in the summer is not likely to help with that.

I don't remember previously seeing consecutive polls previously with the Tories below 20%, but perhaps I wasn't paying attention. It may just be a blip and further polling will indicate little change to the position.

itsgettingweird · 16/11/2023 07:28

I often wonder if "it's what the people want" is a way of trying to pursuance those who don't think that way they are wrong as everyone else does?

Like trying to gather a hard mentality?
