Jess Phillips

Just a little reminder that Government have spent more money on the failed Rwanda scheme than it did on domestic abuse refuges for women and children.

She's absolutely brilliant at saying very little but with such a great huge meaning which means she actually says a lot.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/11/2023 19:32

What exactly do they hope to achieve with this? Israel is hardly going to pay any attention.

Politics is in self destruct mode. Someone needs to get a grip.

I suspect it’s motivated by domestic politics rather than any desire to engage with the practicalities of getting the parties involved to negotiate - the thing that would really lead to an eventual ceasefire.

I think some of the Labour MPs are under pressure from constituents and the SNP want to cause trouble for Labour.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/11/2023 19:47

Exactly. What was the problem with allowing it as a free vote?

Seems Jess Philips voted for it so now has to be sacked from the shadow cabinet.

DuncinToffee · 15/11/2023 19:49

Jess Phillips steps down

Just watching the start of PMQs, Sunak is faltering, all he has is 'but Jeremy Corbyn' and even he doesn't sound convinced saying it.

Maybe he was trying to copy some of jgw satire? Wink

TokyoSushi · 15/11/2023 19:50

Good grief, I go out for the day and we lurch from one shambles to another!

Jess Phillips: This week one of the toughest weeks in politics since I entered Parliament. Says she “tried to do everything that I could to make is so that this was not the outcome, but it is with a heavy heart that I will be leaving my post”

Robert Peston

I think Rishi Sunak has just said that if parliament votes that "Rwanda is a safe country" via his planned emergency legislation - and that can't be taken for granted - he will just ignore the European Court of Human Rights if it intervenes to stop asylum seekers being expelled there. This sounds like he is saying he would be prepared to simply ignore international treaty obligations. Which would be quite an important - and many would say dangerous - precedent

So when other countries break international law, we can't criticise them because they would just call us hypocrites.

LlynTegid · 15/11/2023 20:11

'I will not allow a foreign court to block these flights to Rwanda'.

Does not stop a domestic court blocking them again.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/11/2023 18:09

He's taking the fucking piss!

How dare he. He is scum, no fucking morals. I'm writing to my MP this evening to demand she send a letter- she won't because her heads up his arse and she also has no morals, but I can make my feelings clear.

This is not acceptable behaviour from a decent government and Britain deserves so much better. They really are in the sewers.

Mines Braverman.

No point whatsoever complaining to her about the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

She's all for treating them like pieces of meat.

itsgettingweird · 15/11/2023 20:16

Jess Phillips gone Shock

Now that is not good for Labour.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/11/2023 20:16

The Supreme Court made it clear that it was illegal as a general principle in law, regardless of formal international treaties. So even if they go full on North Korea and withdraw from every treaty they've ever signed, the UK Supreme Court would still find it illegal. So now they want to destroy what's left of international reputation for absolutely nothing.

Only to the backbench, but yes she is a loss.

I don’t thing we are worried about foreigners calling us hypocrites.

Oh god now they’ve even got Cameron tweeting stop the boats.

Why do they think this a number one priority?

I can see that in some parts of the country there is a practical impact - but outside those areas the numbers just aren’t big enough to make a difference. Most illegal immigrants didn’t arrive by boat and most immigrants aren’t illegal.

Even if the Rwanda scheme were fully operational, it doesn’t have capacity for thousands of people.

Are they are still just trying to fight a battle within the Conservative Party?

DuncinToffee · 15/11/2023 20:46

If only they would put so much effort in reducing the NHS waiting list

My MP has an issue with Starmer.

He’ll probably start tweeting about his haircut next.

I saw that earlier.
Failed to vote on the Boris Johnson lying to Parliamentary standards report but upset that Starmer didn't thank him for hold a door open!

Did he? That figures with the slimy non-reply I got to my email at the time. I could have been totally pro Boris and I bet the reply I’d have got would be word for word the same.

bombastix · 15/11/2023 21:20

Well what a low rent bellend your MP is @RafaistheKingofClay.

Notonthestairs · 15/11/2023 21:20

Actually I've just made a tit of myself. He did back the report. I muddled him with another Tory MP. My mistake. 😳 feel like I should apologise to him!

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/11/2023 21:31

I’ll forgive him for that then. I suspect he may have voted for no confidence in BJ but I wouldn’t like to put money on it.

He is still a bellend though. Hopefully an unseated one after the next election.

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2023 21:34

It is bad manners not to say thank you though
I'd have thought that a gritted teeth ' thanks ' would suffice , even if it seems petty , manners cost nothing and he should , at least , make an effort.
I'm actually surprised his like this tbh , but I guess lots goes on in the HoC.

Philip Davies, MP, on the judgement

"He said: “I think we have a constitutional crisis on our hands. It is clear that Parliament has passed all the necessary legislation for this to happen, and the job of judges is to implement the laws passed by Parliament, not to rule on whether or not they like the policy.”
The MP and GB News presenter added: “If the judges don’t like the policy they should take off their robes and stand for election.
“We cannot have unelected judges determining whether they like a policy or not."

I thought the job of judges was to see if laws and decisions are lawful.
