I can't believe they've brought Andrea Leadsom back 😲

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Like that woman would care a jot about social care Angry

Dear oh dear

This has come from Robert Peston but she has written a long letter VONC that I have read. Is this to shut her up?

Edited

Wow I missed that!

Can't actually see any news report on this.

AIBU to be concerned for the health and well-being of our friends on these boards who like to defend Rishi. It must be a terribly troubling time for them having gone from a month ago new government Rishi is the saviour all change, to go back 13 years to Cameron. To go from last week, Braverman is wonderful, to now her being a villian. How will they cope?

I did notice that they seem to have gone awfully quiet about Braverman. It must be confusing to spend all that time looking for old reports to defend her with only to find that the party doesn't want her defended.

I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE BOATS!!!!!

<sobs> <head in hands>

Why are they still going on about the boats?

I care about the boats insofar as it's a bloody dangerous way for refugees to be trying to get here. But after years of hearing Patel and Braverman competing to find the most inhumane and ineffective way of dealing with the issue, all I'm interested in hearing about is it dawning on Cleverly that it could be rather effective to offer safe passage and an efficient asylum processing system.

The mass of overnight posters who jumped on the "hate marches" threads seem to have vanished as well. Strange that.

AdamRyan · 14/11/2023 08:15

When I watched cleverly on the news last night I thought it seemed like it's not his priority.
He said
"As the home secretary I am absolutely committed to stopping the boats as we promised, but also making sure that everybody in the UK feels safe and secure going about their daily business knowing that the government is here to protect them,"

As one of my colleagues says, everything before the but is bullshit Grin

I can't stop laughing at the appointment of a Minister for Common Sense.

Monty Python were ahead of their time.

Wonder who will get the Minister For Running Up The Stairs Two At A Time, Flinging Open The Bedroom Door And Shouting "Aha! Caught You Mildred!" ?

Passepartoute · 14/11/2023 08:20

How could any politician with an ounce of self-respect take on a job requiring them to be "common sense tsar"? The very phrase is an oxymoron. Surely McVey is just setting herself up to be a laughing stock every time her colleagues comes out with yet more stupidity, which is obviously inevitable.

DuncinToffee · 14/11/2023 08:29

I always find the use of the word 'tsar' bizarre.

Comon sense emperor

This whole Cameron appointment had been in the making since Tuesday/Wednesday so Sunak let Braverman spout her hatred and backed her with his confidence whilst knowing he was going to sack her.

To be fair, she knew that too. She was clearly testing out how far she could go before he worked up the courage to do the deed.

DuncinToffee · 14/11/2023 08:52

Yes and neither cared about the people caught up in it.

I thought that was quite slick manoeuvring worthy of House of Cards. Enough rope to hang herself, defenestration, then booted off most press coverage because Hey Dave! I'm late congratulating the Met, as I'm not used to it, but well done for not falling for Braverman's schtick and maintaining order on Saturday.

What she has said and done has divided our country and she should have been sacked a month ago when she did her "winds of change" speech.

I am glad she has gone but the UK has real problems; a PM that appointed someone who was a racialist. I do note something hopeful which is that both Cleverly and Cameron are supportive of remaining in the ECHR. Suella had a few supporters here who talked about leaving it. They are very quiet now. But Suella Braverman is I think still the architect of a campaign to leave; I hope Sunak's changes indicate that the Conservatives will not go for another divisive campaign on that. Sunak has perhaps learned that you can go too far on dividing people from last week.

I hadn't thought of that. She must be spitting feathers at coming second to Dave in the press coverage.

You are quite correct. I wonder why Robert Peston (Political Editor for ITV) reported this? Which he did

Are you sure? I can't see anything about it. You aren't thinking of Andrea Jenkyns by any chance?

LittleBowSheep · 14/11/2023 09:11

I'd like to know whose idea it was to bring Lord Dave back because I can't believe it was Sunak's brain wave.

DuncinToffee · 14/11/2023 09:16

Ouch

Cameron's appointment is “like United bringing back Ronaldo. A failing team reaches desperately for a former hero to rescue them — and there’s a fair chance it ends with Cameron heading to Saudi on a truckload of cash”

I wouldn't be surprised of the brainwave was actually Lord Dave's himself!

AutumnCrow · 14/11/2023 09:22

I wonder if Cameron now regrets walking away in 2016 leaving the ERG and others to rip the Tory Party to shreds and take the country down the toilet. Maybe (in his head) he's back to finish the job he should have started in 2016.

I don't know how, though.

Passepartoute · 14/11/2023 09:29

I suspect Cameron thinks of it as a nice little earner for a few months till they lose the General Election, to say nothing of being a quick pathway into the House of Lords.

On Jeremy Vine today Davina Sheffield, SamCam's sister. Apparently Rishi and Dave are close and have been throughout Rishi's PMship. I think she would know more about it than you.
