31sBREAK: The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon James Cleverly MP as Secretary of State for the Home Department.
This follows the departure from Government of the Rt Hon Suella Braverman KC MP.

Confirmed now

Off the point, but it's a real disgrace that Braverman gets to call herself KC for the rest of her life purely on the basis of relatively short periods as an utterly incompetent Attorney General and even worse Home Secretary.

Well the return of Cameron is certainly a turn up for the books. I'm still angry about Brexit but I believe that he didn't think Leave would win.

Well no, he didn't. But that doesn't excuse him for the fact that he didn't put enough effort into the Remain campaign to call out the outright lies being spouted on the Leave side. You'd think he might have learnt from the way he barely squeaked through on the Scotland referendum, but apparently not.

Passepartoute · 13/11/2023 09:56

If the imminently-to-be-ennobled Cameron becomes Foreign Secretary, there presumably has to be someone with some heft to act as Foreign Office spokesman in the Commons? I wonder who that will be?

Cornettoninja · 13/11/2023 09:59

I despise Cameron for the whole referendum mess, but I can see that appointing him would not be a stupid idea. One of the main defects with Sunak's cabinet has been lack of experience, including lack of experience in opposition, because Johnson basically got rid of all the ministers with any sense. This begins to remedy it, and it's particularly important to have someone experienced in the FO currently

@Passepartoute its an astute observation and might have worked maybe four or five years ago. Given everything that has gone on in that time period it’s just an admission of a collective weakness in the whole party.

it’s clear Rishi doesn’t have an iota of control or faith in his own party to have to go crawling back three PM’s to find anyone even partially credible/capable.

Does it really matter who it is though? It's the government and PM that's the real problem and the fact that she was ever considered to be suitable for that position and allowed to continue and stir up such division is the real issue. Once again Tories only making the"right" decision once their hands are forced.

It does matter who it is. Look at the havoc SB managed to create this weekend. We don't need more of the same.

Buckingham Palace confirms David Cameron has been made a life peer.

First former PM to join the Lords since Thatcher.

There’s a reason he hasn’t before now. That first register of interests will be one to watch.

Lord Carrington was Thatcher's Foreign Secretary so I suppose Lord DC can serve as well. I hope he's got a Very Big Shovel to start clearing up the pile he left behind when he left.

BestIsWest · 13/11/2023 10:07

Disgraceful that one of the High offices is held by someone unelected. Albeit that Cameron almost seems grown up compared to this lot.

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2023 10:08

It must have been an interesting post ceremony dinner yesterday

DC’s appointment will really annoy Johnson 😁

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2023 10:12

I have seen people saying that Cameron will not be accountable in the Commons.

How does that work?

Did you see the pictures at the Cenotaph yesterday? Sombre with some concern. Braverman look terrified.

Have any of the Tory party been accountable in the Commons? Just asking really...

Roussette · 13/11/2023 10:36

I just knew that SB would be gone early this morning but I had to go out and have had my DCs whatsapping me with updates!

The Cameron appointment will have been bubbling under for quite a while betcha

And it had to be done before SC Rwanda decision on Wednesday, because whatever way it goes, it would be a shitstorm with Braverman still in post

tobee · 13/11/2023 10:41

So who's pleased to see the lovely Therese C go in to no 10?

bombastix · 13/11/2023 10:43

Interesting day. Might see the demotion of a lot of wannabe leaders

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/11/2023 10:44

Its a gamble to engage DC again for sure. Will he bring together the more moderates of the party and regain some of the soft Tory vote that was haemorrhaging to Labour and Lib Dem, or will it cause the entire hardcore right wingers and eurohaters to explode entirely, fracturing the party further? Probably both I'd guess.

tobee · 13/11/2023 10:44

Plus I've seen Cameron getting out of his big car too many times now. #bbcnewsonaloop

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2023 10:44

I think the general public will perceive the new FS as being anti Brexit.

I think they will also assume (probably correctly) that Sunak could think of an actual sitting MP good enough for high office.

bombastix · 13/11/2023 10:49

Well question is whether Cameron is better than David Lammy. I think so.

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2023 10:50

Nope. Don't agree. I like Lammy.

Roussette · 13/11/2023 10:51

Really? 100% don't agree, I have a lot of time for Lammy. My DD has met him a number of times.

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2023 10:51

And I don't think that really is the question- Lord Sir David of Cameron is the one in post.

It’s Cameron. Just like it was Lord Douglas Home in the 70s.
