What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

I do t understand that thinking. Basically they are saying ‘I don’t think I’m beautiful enough so I hide behind fake.’ It’s so sad.

No it’s a display of wealth. It’s saying « I have hundreds of pounds to spend on myself every month »

janesee · 06/11/2023 18:06

No they don't. I'd love to know what other observation skills people have who can supposedly see 0 25ml of filler! It's just so embarrassing for you and other who claim this is the case.

They can't. If my husband (ex) and family friends have never spotted it, then nobody else can.

Some might THINK it's a display of wealth. It really isn't.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 06/11/2023 18:08

It's hyaluronic acid. Naturally present in our skin, too.

That doesn't mean much. I have air in my lungs but I wouldn't want it injected into my skin. Natural substances have a natural place. The rest is ultra-processed bodies.

Meowandthen · 06/11/2023 18:09

You can shout me down as much as you like but I think it’s rather sad that women in their 20s feel the need to get Botox and alter their appearances so much.

We never realise until much older how fresh and lovely youth is.

The overly smooth brows, filled cheeks, huge lashes, caterpillar brows, and pouffy lips are aging. No one needs Botox at 30 as I saw claimed recently.

Yes it’s your choice but what happens when fashions move on? When your face drops so you have to inject more and more (expensive) poison?

I just think it’s a shame that so many feel the need to do all this. Too many young women look exactly the same with this look.

SirChenjins · 06/11/2023 18:09

janesee · 06/11/2023 18:03

But mostly because it seems so stupid to pump garbage into such an important, delicate and naturally beautiful part of the body.

It's hyaluronic acid. Naturally present in our skin, too.

A synthetic form. There are lots of naturally occurring things in our bodies which we wouldn’t inject in synthetic or natural form in larger quantities than occur naturally .

Real wealth whispers. It doesn’t shout, or do all that. It’s a bit of disposable income, that’s all.

Shadowonasun · 06/11/2023 18:10

Meh. I don't want to look 'natural', I want to look GOOD!

What's the weird obsession with 'natural'? To me, something either looks good or it doesn't. I don't give a shiny, if it's 'natural'. Huge duck pout doesn't look good (to me), but nicely done (not overdone) lips can look absolutely great, as many women on this thread shown. Whether you can tell or not, who cares.

I don't have lip fillers, 'done' eyebrows, fake lashes. But it's not because of my 'superior character', it's because I have dark full eyebrows, long black lashes and full lips already. If I didn't - I'd do something about it for sure. My hair is cut and colored, I have tattoos, teeth straightened and whitened, breast lift post-baby. None of this is 'natural'. So should I walk with greying hair, saggy tits and yellow crooked teeth if I can change it? Why would I?

My mum has botox and a little of lip filler. Yes, I can tell, but she looks bloody great, much better than without it. I know mumsnet is full of women age 70, who don't look a day over 25, not a tiniest line on their faces, and people regularly assume their daughter is their mother. Yep, totes believable. In reality I've never ever seen anyone remotely close to that, even the most beautiful multimillionaire celebrities doesn't look decades younger than they are 99% of the time.

What I'm saying is, if you want it - go for it. Your body - your business.

suitsyoumissus · 06/11/2023 18:10

Skintoday · 06/11/2023 14:44

In my opinion, you should never be able to detect lip filler.
I run a successful aesthetics clinic and focus on extremely natural results.
I have a small amount of lip filler every 12-18 months.

I do agree that some lip filler can negatively detract from someone’s beauty and in 20 years many women will regret their lip filler decisions.

Less is more 😁

Yours are quite subtle but they are quite % obviously filled. It will be even more obvious in profile. Filled lips tend to look better face-on, and of course that's how people who get it done tend to see themselves. The rest of us see their faces from all angles and it's often the profile view that has me looking twice.
Having said that - I defend the right of anyone to stuff themselves with fillers if that is what makes them happy. I just hope they are still as happy in say 20 years time.

To be fair it is a display of wealth!

loads of people in this country are barely scraping by. As in they cannot pay household bills and cannot feed their kids.

so having a couple of hundred extra per month to spend on yourself 100% is a display of relative wealth.

You just don’t like it! 🤣

Acornsoup · 06/11/2023 18:11

I think it's more a display of priorities.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 06/11/2023 18:12

Love the fact that so many of the defences of lip filler on this thread basically say that 'when it's done well you wouldn't notice it.' A cheaper way to make it look like you had made no change to your lips would be to make no change to your lips.

Sunsept · 06/11/2023 18:12

It’s a look I strongly dislike too, especially in young women when they could/should be celebrating their youthful looks! They probably looked just as good before they had it done (same as eyebrow tattooing).

@MonsteraMama your fillers look good!

overthinkersanonnymus · 06/11/2023 18:13

Ivegotsunshineinabag · 06/11/2023 12:22

Love my lips….

I’m also botoxed to the point of no frowning and have my eyelashes curled and dyed.

BTW I also have no breasts or nipples due to breast cancer.

It’s my body and I probably only have a few years before the next cancer hits, I’ll do what I want with it.

If you don’t like it, don’t have it done.

I think they look lovely!

chaosmaker · 06/11/2023 18:14

Also who is it that has to rectify and ultimately pay for all this 'beauty' treatment when it goes bad? Often it is the overstretched NHS that should charge for correcting pointless purely cosmetic (not talking about corrective or reconstructive) procedures. The news article linked early on in the thread said that the woman had paid £700 to correct it.

To the person saying it is natural, not everyone goes to a reputable source and don't know what is being injected into their face.

I completely agree with this.

Anyone who has the money to get their nails done, lashes, hair extensions, lip filler, Botox etc. has significantly more disposable income than the average person.

Just because people disagree with the outcome of the (relative) wealth, it doesn’t mean it isn’t wealth.

CoffeeCantata · 06/11/2023 18:16

I think they look awful. Yes - a sex doll is what comes to mind when I see women with over-inflated, shiny protruding lips.

Apart from anything else - it looks really painful and inflamed. Hadn't realised it can affect speech too!

I really hope these women are doing it for themselves because I dread to think the sort of weird blokes they will attract.

Alliannna · 06/11/2023 18:16

I just saw on Instagram someone posted Katie Prices new lips....I don't understand why you would want your lips to look like this?! They look more like a monkey's bumhole than a lip! Her lips are touching her nose? It's not even remotely attractive looking?

janesee · 06/11/2023 18:17

A synthetic form. There are lots of naturally occurring things in our bodies which we wouldn’t inject in synthetic or natural form in larger quantities than occur naturally

Of course it's going to be synthetically produced. Mainly^ plant based.

No it’s a display of wealth. It’s saying « I have hundreds of pounds to spend on myself every month »

Or, "I feel like getting fillers or Botox because I want to" I certainly don't do it to show my wealth or get it every month. I preferred my younger face so I've had a small amount of filler in my lips and Botox just to smooth things slightly but would never get fillers to change my cheeks or jaw line or Botox anywhere else than my forehead.

Many more people flaunt wealth by buying shit like clothes and cars than get their faces filled/smoothed!

They look dreadful. 'Duck-mouth' DH and I call it. Plus all that eyebrow stuff that women have done. And don't get me started on those plastic fingernail things.

I love my acrylics- I won’t have a word said against them 😃

frenchfries111 · 06/11/2023 18:18

I worked with a young woman who loved filters. She touched her lips non bloody stop, they looked so uncomfortable.
She was only 23/24 and it all made her look middle aged, I saw a pic with her mum and they looked the same. Sad.

torimangion · 06/11/2023 18:19

I just thought that you think lip filler ALWAYS looks bad because when you cannot tell if someone has had it done, you just can't tell so by your own argument it doesn't ALWAYS look bad! I came to this thought when I saw "Ivegotsunshineinabag's" photo - I'd have never guessed that she had the lip filler procedure done to herself, her lips look LOVELY. So thank you sweetheart, for taking the plunge and sending us a photo of yourself to show us your lips, you really DO look stunning. That said I abhor the Big Lipped brigade who wear those caterpillars over their lashes and face shaper shadows around their cheeks, they all look as one - the clown!

5128gap · 06/11/2023 18:22

BansheeofInisherin · 06/11/2023 18:01

@5128gap why is it faux feminist to not want your daughters sucked into this Love Island crap? There is an immense amount of pressure on them because everyone is doing it. There was none on me because i grew up pre Insta.

Which is a fine and valid point. Its when people feel the need to justify their unpleasantness by adding a feminist angle to a post where they have previously described young women as looking like animals, aliens, porn stars, blow up dolls, where they link their appearance to negative character traits, where they collude with men 'me and my DH always say..' to scoff at them that I doubt their sincerity.

WimbyAce · 06/11/2023 18:23

I find the whole thing weird but maybe it's my age. The lips, the fake tan, the huge eyebrows, the crazy eyelashes. Just looks awful in my opinion.
