What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

I really want people like you to post a pic of your lips alongside 3 or 4 random others that's don't have filler so we can see if we can identify which are yours because I always wonder if there really are people who have filler when you can't tell. To me both of those who've posted so far are pretty obvious, but of course that's easy for me to say when that's literally why they've posted. Totally up to them if that's the look they like of course, I just don't think they can say they look natural.

Here's mine....no filters/lip gloss etc.

I was thinking about getting my lips done but unsure now! I'm mid 50s & have lost the top & bottom corners of my lips. Lip liner doesn't work, I look like a child playing with their mums make up bag! I wanted just enough to be able to wear red lippy! 💋💋 👄

Women are judged for their appearance, which is oppression. When women pay to improve (or "improve") their appearances, this disadvantages women who cannot afford such treatments, and makes things harder for all women by artificially raising standards, contributing to us all being judged more harshly.

Case in point: celebrities have so many anti-ageing treatments that it has distorted what people think looks "normal" for a given age. Celebrities at 40 now look closer to untreated people at 30. 50 year olds look 40, and so on.

So now natural looking 30 year olds are treated as haggard slobs, or as if there is something physically wrong with them such as an unhealthy lifestyle.

I have not even touched on Botox and Juvaderm being continuously tested on animals - that's not ethical.

Right, but you’re also judging other women for their appearance if they have chosen to have filler, so you are also oppressing other women just because they are doing something you don’t personally like.

And your point about affordability, does this mean that we as women should never spend any money on our appearance just because not everybody could afford to do so? I shouldn’t go to the hair dressers because not every woman can afford to? I shouldn’t wear makeup because not every woman can afford to? I shouldn’t buy new clothes because not every woman can afford to? I shouldn’t wax my upper lip because not all women can afford to? The list is endless if you put it that way. EVERY women can and should do whatever she personally likes to make her personally feel more confident and better in herself.

Plus if you look at the vast amount of replies, it’s quite clear that the majority of people responding are not concerned about “other women” or about ethical testing (although that may be your concern and that’s fair enough), or indeed about anything at all OTHER THAN they don’t like how lip filler looks. At that point, it’s plain and simple judging another woman's appearance and as you said yourself- that’s oppression.

janesee · 06/11/2023 15:06

My only worry is the overfilled lips being so stretched that when they decide to tone it down they have sagging skin. Is that what happens ?

You could go somewhere reputable for a consultation. I just get the edges defined, including my Cupid's bow. I have very little volume added, and almost nothing in my bottom lip.

Princessbananahamock · 06/11/2023 15:09

I think they resemble The Simpsons lips .

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 06/11/2023 15:12

They are horrible, and turning the women who wear them into a homogenous looking tribe of fuglies. However, YABU to absolve women of all guilt. Whichever nefarious males in the beauty/plastic surgery industry came up with these things (if indeed they are male), the vast majority of those promoting their attractiveness, either as influencers or working as beauticians, are females.

badhappenings · 06/11/2023 15:12

Yes I have to agree with you, it looks so false and in my opinion detracts from their natural beauty,

What happens when these young 20 something girls are in say their 40s? Do their lips enter a room 5 minutes before the rest of them does😂

Twillow · 06/11/2023 15:14

Annna41 · 06/11/2023 14:17

I'm mid 40s and these are a selection of my lips from over the last 14 years.

I would be interested to know if people think I have had lip filler 😊
If so in what pictures?

I'd say all except the first. That blistered look to the bottom lip, and in 3 the top lips outline is beyond the lip.

Ffsebok · 06/11/2023 15:29

nat1972 · 06/11/2023 14:36

My bottom one is my natural lip, no fillers at all!!!

You can easily tell. You have the giveaway of the ridge across your top lip.

jays · 06/11/2023 15:33

wensleywhale · 06/11/2023 12:13

It's so gross to look at though

Don’t look then. No need to shame folk for their choices, it’s their body. Tad melodramatic!

adriftabroad · 06/11/2023 15:37

@BarbiesWorld is the only poster IMO, with nice filled lips.Would never have known.

The rest are so obvious.

Gnomegarden32 · 06/11/2023 15:38

ManateeFair · 06/11/2023 14:40

But your notion of beauty might be different from theirs. Other women's faces aren't there to make you happy. The idea of 'natural beauty' is intrinsically harmful anyway, as it implies that women who are not lucky enough to be born beautiful are somehow of less value because they choose to enhance themselves. Natural beauty is a) in the eye of the beholder and b) a fucking lottery, so let's not start praising women just for having the right genetics to meet your beauty standards.

I was waiting for someone to say this. I am aware other people’s faces are not there to make me happy, which is why I have voiced my feelings anonymously on an online forum and not in real life.

I also believe that all women in their 20s and 30s are naturally beautiful.

MonsteraMama · 06/11/2023 15:39

I like mine 🤷‍♀️ judge away, I think they look great.

What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful
Ffsebok · 06/11/2023 15:41

@MonsteraMama They do look great in this pic but typically in real life and especially from the side, they look really odd.

HowAmYa · 06/11/2023 15:43

Hit and miss really.
On the whole I think every just looks the EXACT same nowadays; same huge lashes, cheek fillers and lip fillers.

Though it's MUCH easier to draw the conclusion you have OP, and I for that matter, when you don't suffer with self confidence issues regarding certain facial features. My confidence is in the gutter since the age of 11, however I like my lips so of course I wouldn't think of getting them.

I remember reading about how Faryal Khan (Amir Khan's wife) felt under intense pressure as the wife of a celeb to get them done. And it's quite tragic because she is totally unrecognisable now and her own children don't look like her.

What can we do though? There's aesthetic clinics on every high street now.

BringMeTea · 06/11/2023 15:47

They all look rank. Don't do it!

RUBBISH

i think you forgot to prefix your moment with ‘In my opinion…’

BackAgainstWall · 06/11/2023 15:50

Each to their own, but personally I think it’s not a good look.

They look like plumped up duck bills that also end up with the splits at the sides of the mouth getting bigger and bigger. A bit like the Joker in Batman.

What happens when these 20 somethings become 30/40 - do their lips enter a room 5 minutes before the rest of them does 😂

I think it makes a lot of girls look very false and plastic, and it detracts from their natural beauty.

I think definitely the last one, possibly the third one but that might be because you’re pouting in that photo more than the others.

Angrymum22 · 06/11/2023 14:31

I spend my working life looking at lips (dentist) and however little is used it is very obvious up close.
What I struggle to understand is if it is not noticeable why spend all that money having it done in the first place?
It’s a bit like the emperor’s new clothes. You are being sold a product to enhance your looks that you admit you cannot detect.
As for Botox, it is not preventative, your skin will still age and wrinkle if exposed to the sun. High factor sun cream or moisturiser is a far better investment.
People who use Botox lose the subtle muscle movements we use to read body language. It’s similar to what happens when people suffer with Parkinson’s. It leaves you emotionless. The smile ends at the mouth which we often interpret as fake.

Exactly….I would hate to lose those subtle (or not so subtle in my case!) expressions. A lot of my communication is through those micro-expressions and they really connect people I think. Although a lot of people don’t communicate in this way I’ve noticed….I wonder if it’s an introvert (Asperger’s in my family’s case) thing and it’s because we find talking so exhausting…?

Weddingpuzzle · 06/11/2023 15:52

I haven't had my lips done, I have naturally fleshy lips (genetic) but I have a ridge on the top and bottom of my lips, a deep indent above my cupids bow (it actually looks like a fingerprint in playdoh on closer examination) and a blurry left hand side of my top lip which are all apparently signs of fillers?! Is nature screwing with me?? I am so lazy when it comes to beauty, I hate the thought of people thinking I've put filler in!

Cincinnatus · 06/11/2023 15:54

I can always tell. I assume they are insecure which is sad. I would never insult my face.

Weddingpuzzle · 06/11/2023 15:54

This thread prompted me to take a face on picture of my lips and a side on profile view. I am warning you, if you are feeling a bit sensitive about yourself today don't do a side profile. Vile!

ManchesterLu · 06/11/2023 15:57

cardibach · 06/11/2023 11:54

Someone will be along in a minute to say you can’t tell they are filled, it’s only bad filler you can see.
I agree with you though. And they don’t move properly either so people with them often look/sound odd when speaking.

Edited

Honestly though, this is absolutely true. Subtle aesthetic work can be great. Other people might not be able to tell you've had it done, yet it will change your overall look.

I've seen some absolutely horrific examples of lip fillers though, and the people who've done them should be arrested to be honest as they're crap. Yet you can guarantee you'll have a queue of 'huns' lining up on social media to say how good they look baaaabe.
