Matthew Perry buried already?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 04/11/2023 12:42

I don't mean this to be an insensitive question but why has Matthew Perry been buried so quickly? Is it customary in America? Admittedly it was nearly 20 years ago but when a family member died unexpectedly at home in the UK we had to wait over a month before the body was released.

I was wondering the same, esp when the cause of death hasn’t been announced and the tox reports will apparently take weeks to come back

but I (gladly) know little about burials etc

PickAChew · 04/11/2023 12:44

It's usual in the US. I might have misread something but I think it's actually law that it has to be done within a certain time frame.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/11/2023 12:45

This is totally normal in the United States.

Washyourfaceinmysink · 04/11/2023 12:46

If they’ve done all the tests they need (toxicology etc) I don’t think there’s any reason to delay the burial?
My mum’s funeral (uk) was the same timeline, although her death was expected.

saraclara · 04/11/2023 12:47

It's only this country which can't manage to bury its dead in a timely manner.

When I was younger, a week was normal. Now, as you say, it's a month. As usual, we just don't have the public services that we need.

Alifestylechoice · 04/11/2023 12:47

Only reason for delays here are it’s yet another thing broken in our country. Most places in the world manage to bury their dead within the week.

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 04/11/2023 12:48

I think perhaps England (not sure about Scotland and Wales) is the outlier on the length of time between death and burial compared to the rest of the world.

It always seems to be bordering on the inhumane to make the family wait that long to me coming from a perspective where 3 days is the usual.

BigFatLiar · 04/11/2023 12:55

In laws died in Scotland, MiL died Saturday buried Thursday, FiL died Monday buried Friday.

This

My Mum was cremated within a week and a half in Wales, this was in the before times* though, so things may be less efficient now (everything else seems to be)

bratchlocks · 04/11/2023 12:59

My gran was buried a week after death because my uncle wanted to go on holiday that was already booked. At time time it raised a few eyebrows, but looking back, and now I'm an adult too, I don't feel upset by it. Family holidays are expensive and life needs to carry on for the living, so why not get it done quick.

BadFaith · 04/11/2023 12:59

England, for some reason, has exceptionally long gaps between death and burial/cremation. Often a week or even more elapses, unless the deceased has a religious ceremony.

Erber · 04/11/2023 13:02

I've always known people to be buried/cremated resonably quickly, within a week or 2 at most. Most people I have known have died from old age or chronic health issues so the cause of death has been obvious with no real investigations.

The only time I've known it to take longer was 1 man I'd known who committed suicide. His funeral was held a month after he died, although I believe his actual body was with the funeral directors that day so I'm not really sure what the issue was as I don't believe his death was treated as suspicious in any way. I've never had to deal with death or funerals much, so perhaps it was more 'administration' type issues that delayed it?

ASGIRC · 04/11/2023 13:03

In my country, unless there is a need to do an autopsy, which would delay procedures, youd have a wake and burial within a couple of days of the persons passing.

Ive never really understood what takes so long in the UK... Why is it a month later?!?!

Completely agree with that!

Neighbours87 · 04/11/2023 13:04

In Northern Ireland we usually have a wake days 1 and 2 and then burial on day 3

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 04/11/2023 13:06

The UK, particulalry post-Covid UK, is a disgrace.

I live in the Middle East and the dead are buried the same day!

Recent Scottish and English deaths I know of have taken 3 weeks.

I have Irish family who will attend anyone’s funeral in the community, even if they don’t know them. It’s really nice.

But from a practical perspective I imagine it’s quite difficult to drop everything and attend a funeral within a few days

This.

it is another example of english services being poor.

Offredismysister · 04/11/2023 13:07

A family member died recently & it took 3.5 weeks for the cremation. Which was awful, we were all in limbo.

FancyFanny · 04/11/2023 13:07

It's only recently that UK funerals seem to be so long after the death.I remember family members being buried within a week back in the 70s and 80s. I think it's more to do with the broken systems now than any customs. A week is about right.

MistyMountainTop · 04/11/2023 13:09

A friend of mine's father has just died in the US and the funeral isn't until 27th November. Don't know why!

Yep. I found the 3.5 week wait for my DH's funeral absolutely agonising. The day that he died, I called the funeral directors, and when they said what the wait would be for a crematorium date, it was like another knife had been stuck in me.

My MILs last year was also almost a month. That was not so traumatic and untimely a loss though, so we were able to use the time for daily abroad to join us. But still, it was a hurdle that we had to wait to get over.

Really? The last person I know to die had their funeral held within the week. That was only a few months ago. Perhaps, like a lot of things in this country, it's dependent on area? I'm in Scotland.

BigFatLiar · 04/11/2023 13:13

It may be simply a lack of capacity. There are a lot more people living in our town, must be at least three times as many as when I was little, no new cemeteries or crematoria.
