That's amazing thank you. May see you there!

You can try driving to Njarðvík, since you're on holiday and everything. Apparently you can see it from there and that road is open.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:41

Look for Kambur in Njarðvík on Google maps. It's about 40 minutes to drive from Rvk.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:44

The Vísir webcam is good right now, but they're playing the radio over it so it's a background of pop songs and light chat. Which is quite funny.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:46

There's a digger apparently trying to build a wall in the 30 seconds before the lava reaches him. Crazy. I keep shouting at him to just leave. It's too late!

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:52

@CrunchyCarrot That guy is just nicking the Vísir feed.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 11:03

He normally pays for access to feeds though so I doubt he is stealing it. I watched his reporting of the Gaza/Israel situation and he only ever used cams that he'd paid for access.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 11:06

Lava's reaching the berm. Wow.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 11:07

Fair enough!

The lava is about 1 km away from the pipe that supplies hot water for all the surrounding towns so it's a serious situation. Residents have been asked to turn down their heating and refrain from any showers/baths, turn off hot tubs etc. The hot water company have filled their emergency tanks in preparation.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 11:09

Oh look at this, magnificent lava fountains!

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 11:21

They're trying to close the berm across that road (Blue Lagoon road?), goodness they'll have to be quick because the lava is motoring.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 11:30

This account is about to become throwaway.

Iceland - possible eruption due near the Blue Lagoon
CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 11:44

Beautiful clear day over there! Enjoy your trip @Bimblesalong

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 11:47

It's stunning. I don't think we'll see anything but smoke but even that is incredible.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 11:49

Keep going to Kambur in Njarðvík, I definitely saw some people standing there watching the lava earlier. Have a lovely day anyway, it's superb weather for it!

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 12:11

Heating pipe breached by the looks of it:

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 12:19

This is going to be a huge issue. People can't stay there without hot water. I suppose the airport could be affected, too.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 12:20

We saw lava!! On my big camera so will post when back in the uk.

Cool, where are you?

OP posts:
RomComPhooey · 08/02/2024 12:31

Am I right in thinking the hot water provides heating too, not just hot bathing water? In which case no heating in winter in Iceland is a big deal.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 12:35

@Puffinshop Steve just stating now he can't show certain cams that have a better view because he 'can't steal footage' that he doesn't own the rights to.

Unlike a certain geologist who DID steal footage from Isak last time.

Yes, this is exactly right.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 13:11

Puffinshop, you win every good citizen of mumsnet going. Your tips were amazing! Thank you.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 13:12

Just north-east of Njarðvík.

Seeingadistance · 08/02/2024 13:20

How big an area is supplied by the heating pipe which has ruptured?
