Wow that's insane!!!! 😱

Wolfiefan · 06/02/2024 22:45

Bloody hell! I can’t see how anyone could feel safe working there. I feel so sorry for those who can’t go home. I can’t imagine how they must feel.

EwwSprouts · 06/02/2024 23:06

No, I would not want to work there. Be on tenterhooks the whole time. Feel very sorry for the displaced townspeople.

Icelandtrip2024 · 06/02/2024 23:27

Did you see the Grindavik man who is seeing the government for not letting him into the town?

Icelandtrip2024 · 06/02/2024 23:27

Did you see the Grindavik man who is seeing the government for not letting him into the town?

Yes. I do have some sympathy with the principles of his argument but I also think there could easily have been more than one fatality if they had just allowed a free for all.

quivers · 07/02/2024 14:01

That fissure in the sports hall - OMG!

Zonder · 07/02/2024 18:53

Wow that's shocking!

Icelandtrip2024 · 07/02/2024 20:44

I keep seeing things saying they are on high alert again - are an legitimate?

RomComPhooey · 07/02/2024 21:39

The regular seismology updates are posted on the Icelandic Met Office website - it has seismology as well as weather. This is the landing page for Grindavik updates:

Thank you.

Another eruption has started!

https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/jardskjalftahrina-nordan-vid-grindavik-hofst-i-nott

At 5:30 this morning, the intensity of small earthquake activity started northeast of Sýlingarfell. About 30 minutes later, an eruption began in the same area.

For the first few minutes, the crack extended both to the north and to the south.

Based on the first reports from the Coast Guard's surveillance flight, the eruption is in the same areas as the one that erupted on December 18. The crack is about 3 km long, runs from Sundhnúk in the south to the eastern end of Stóra-Scógfell. Lava flows mostly to the west at this stage. Lava flow appears to be slightly less than at the beginning of the eruption on December 18.

The jets reach a height of about 50-80 m and the plume rises to a height of about 3 km.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 08:01

From what I can make out this is not nearer to Grindavik but is along the same fissure that erupted on 18th December.

Some webcam links

RedToothBrush · 08/02/2024 08:11

Shamelessly nicked off twitter. A rough idea of location.

Iceland - possible eruption due near the Blue Lagoon
CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 08:13

That looks about right @RedToothBrush - always hard to make it out in the dark! Thanks for the map.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 09:25

Trying to work out if there is somewhere we can go to see anything, even if it's just the light.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 09:32

Are you in Iceland? You can see the light from capital very easily. My son spotted it immediately this morning on the way to school.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 09:38

Yeah, we are on holiday. Trying to work direction! Do you know anywhere closer at all? I suspect you can't get as close as the webcam but would love to try.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:06

Just go up a hill. E.g. where Perlan is. Or Ægissíða is where I go because it has a clear view across the bay.

You won't get close enough to see it fully, unless from a plane, and I think it's not a great idea to try, but you can see the glow. Try at dusk if the weather's clear, it shows up better then.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 10:08

I made a couple of screenshots to show where things are at currently. Lava getting close to the road, location of berm (wall) and the Blue Lagoon.

Icelandtrip2024 · 08/02/2024 10:22

That's amazing thank you. May see you there!

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 10:25

Well the lava has reached the road, tarmac and water pipes clearly breached.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 10:29

Much closer view on Agenda Free TV. The guy who fronts the channel, Steve Lookner, is certainly no volcano expert! But good for a close up:

I'd turn off the voice, he is really irritating me LOL.

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:29

Oof look at all the SAR people just parked on the road. What is the point of being there, it's too late to do anything!

Puffinshop · 08/02/2024 10:31

DH reckons they're just enjoying the view, probably right to be fair.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/02/2024 10:32

Lava flowing so fast!
