Do you find extremely muscular men attractive?

I see a lot of stuff about body acceptance for women, some insanely popular instagrams featuring very large women and clothes, etc. This is great, and I support representation of all body types. I then wondered about men, how they don't ever seem to glorify or share images of being larger bodied. Only muscled bodies.
So I presume men are less accepting of themselves as 'fat' whereas women are becoming more progressive and accepting?

It is obviously a very popular trend for men to build excessive muscle, perhaps way more, in the general sense than any other time in history, but i have wondered how many women like it? I guess this is objectifying the male body, but I am more interested in it as a trend.

I personally prefer a Bruce Lee or yoga toned type male body to a 'built' one, and can't relate to the whole bulging muscle thing. As a straight woman who is attracted to men, anything more than natural kind of turns me right off, sexually, although of course not as a person.

What do you think?

Not personally - I'd be dwarfed.

I was attracted to one once but that was because he did something exceptionally kind for me (got me home safely after an accident)

Do men not have varying taste?
It’s a trick question; of course we do. Out of my group of male friends we all have very difference preferences.

Women very much have imposed a certain preference in looks on men, but you’re not likely to get an admission of that on here!

I genuinely don't care even slightly about men's opinion on this, so it doesn't matter to me whether women "admit" to something that only exists inside the heads of men.

@rantinglunatic

Have you stood close to one!?

I have, plenty of times, and it did nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Just like standing close to a brick wall.

I have and I just felt a bit intimidated! Like I might get accidentally stepped on. Not the guy’s fault at all, he was just standing there minding his own business. But I’m short and he was massive and the discrepancy didn’t feel great.

I have loved the Rock as a character since his WWE days (he has always done a great promo) and like Chris Hemsworth etc as actors/celebrities, but they do seem a bit like Action Men - completely sexless.

Of course muscular men are hot.

Agree with PP re primal feeling... But also there's something sexy about the level of focus needed to achieve it.

I want a man who could protect me in an apocalypse and I'm afraid dad bods and scandi glasses aren't going to cut it

JL690 · 03/11/2023 09:11

No not at all. I think the large muscly guys tend to be all show and it restricts their movements. I much prefer the swimmer type body, not overly muscly and very supple, and my ultimate is the gymnasts body, strong and very flexible.

Frostine · 03/11/2023 09:17

I am short , 5ft and like the average size man 5.10 ish so not very , very tall and a little on the chunky size as they are nice to cuddle and receive a bear hug from.
Whilst a very well toned , 6 pack man is great to look at , I think of all the time he is down the gym working on those muscles whilst you are sat at home or waiting for him to come back home !

Needhelp101 · 03/11/2023 09:18

Yes, to an extent.
But not to the roid-fuelled, veiny extent.
Zac Efron in Baywatch is the latter, not a good look.

But joining in with the Rock and Momoa love!

Sounds like a very sensible approach.

With one important distinction: muscles built only in gym are pretty much useless in a real life-threatening situation - only good for visual effect.

A muscular body resulting from sport or a job requiring lots of physical effort - that's the real thing.

Also, who would want be around people taking steroids? (see roid rage ...)

Icefoot · 03/11/2023 09:41

I prefer a man to look obviously "fit" like he takes care of himself, plays sport, is active but not like he spends his life in the gym.

However, when DC used to do gymnastics, I did find the adult male gymnasts attractive in away that similarly muscular men working out with weights in the gym aren't. What's thar about?

I saw a man on the station yesterday in teeny tiny shorts and thighs so huge (muscle, not fat) he couldn't walk properly, he had an odd waddle because he couldn't bring his legs together. Why would he do that to himself?

Manadou · 03/11/2023 09:48

I know someone who regularly wins/won body builder competitions. There were rumours about what he had been taking, plus he ate all these weird lunches and made shake drinks out of powders. He's not 45 and he's had 3 heart attacks.

Finlesswonder · 03/11/2023 09:54

Some men actually just have natural six packs. My ex did, and his mother was also very naturally toned. She was tiny and super skinny but even at 70 she had proper little biceps. I think some people just have good muscle definition.

GOODCAT · 03/11/2023 09:54

My husband is muscular but that is because of his job which involves a lot of heavy lifting 10 hours a day so he does way more than someone just going to the gym for a few hours. His body shape is very different to men who work in an office but go to the gym regularly.

In terms of attraction I think physical looks are far less important than personality.

CanIPetThatDawg · 03/11/2023 10:10

Extremely muscly men are not a bit sexy to me, but I do like some well-defined muscles. Athletic muscular rather than massively beefed up. The steroid popping look is an instant fanny clencher.

The thin Jarvis Cocker types who are all knees and elbows aren’t really for me either, although Jarvis himself has many thousands of people lusting after him so I doubt he’ll be worried.

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 03/11/2023 10:12

Yeah - I just find them scary rather than sexy. I've been overpowered more than once and I don't think that amount of muscles are nice and have no bearing on sexual prowess or stamina (I imagine 😂!)

KimberleyClark · 03/11/2023 10:23

No I prefer lean and hard to bulging muscle.

SallyWD · 03/11/2023 10:32

No. I've never liked really muscly men. To me they look slightly thuggish and unintelligent.
I do like a man with a nice chest and strong arms but not overly muscular.

SirChenjins · 03/11/2023 10:41

The ones with arms that are so muscly they can't put them down by their side and thighs that are so overdeveloped they can't walk properly just look ridiculous - esp as they're usually squeezed into tight clothing that make them look like walking sausages and usually have tattoos. Bleurgh.

I like fit and toned with a bit of defined muscle on the upper arms and shoulders, but that's about it. I prefer men who are more on the bookish side.

Mammyloveswine · 03/11/2023 10:48

I like a tall, broad teddy bear of a man! With dark hair, beard and a very hairy chest!

mindutopia · 03/11/2023 10:55

No, it's the only 'look' on a man that gives me serious ick.

Growlybear83 · 03/11/2023 10:59

Loulou599 · 03/11/2023 06:15

Reading through the comments isn't it what we would have called "shallow" or "bodyshaming" in men?

I think you can say you don't like muscles without being disparaging.

I also don't believe women don't like muscles, it's what separates us from men. Maybe it is a confidence thing? Maybe if you aren't in shape yourself a muscly man would just make you feel insecure

I think that's a very strange comment. I've got to the age of 65 and have never ever found a muscly man remotely attractive, whatever his other physical features may be. The more muscly a man is, the more off putting I find it. It's nothing to do with whether or not I'm physically in shape or my own security/insecurity. In my youth I was very fit and was always told I was very attractive but I still found very muscular men repulsive. My body may have changed over the years, but my tastes haven't 😆😆

I can completely accept that many women like men like that, but there are many more who don't.

TheCadoganArms · 03/11/2023 11:20

Down my gym there is quite clearly a divide between the blokes out to achieve the roided up Love Island look and the guys training to compliment their chosen sport (rugby, hockey, football etc). There is a difference between being sport fit and just 'big'. Sure thr big guy can arm curl a 30kg dumbell but he probably could not do park run without stopping.

BrimfulOfMash · 03/11/2023 11:23

Men work really hard to attain that bulked muscular look, it is an active choice. It isn’t being negative about a physical characteristic that they can’t change So I don’t see it as body shaming to say you don’t find it attractive, that is also simply a difference of opinion in aesthetics.

I am not attracted to men with that very bulky muscular physique. I find lean, fit and wiry to be attractive.

But if I fell in love with someone who was a bit chubby or muscular… so be it. I would love them just the same. (Wouldn’t want to live alongside the gym / bodybuilder diet lifestyle though).
