What do you buy from Aldi?

What’s worth getting? Especially as part of a general shop

OP posts:
shivawn · 01/11/2023 12:48

We do the bulk of our grocery shop in Aldi so buy most things there. We do a special run to Lidl every month or so to stock up on their flavoured water.

dingit · 01/11/2023 12:52

It's my main shop. Their 4 pack of fresh salmon fillets this week was delicious. We also like the fajita kit over El Paso.
Follow Cardiff mum on Instagram she has great recipes

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 12:45

@Breadahead - we see it differently, and that's okay. I'm happy to do that without berating people who have a differing opinion to mine.

Patronising much 😂 honestly the thought of you going round MORRISONS thinking you're a cut above is killing me 🤣

fitflopqueen · 01/11/2023 12:55

Love our Aldi, use for main shop, wine good, face cream great, some things may be trial and error, I top up at Tesco or M&S eg needed black treacle and preserved ginger this week.
Use local butcher for meat etc and make own bread/cake.

skilpadde · 01/11/2023 12:57

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 12:15

@BoardOfMuffins - if Mumsnet banned all posters who said anything remotely negative it would be a very quiet place.

The OP posted a question about what people buy from Aldi. There are replies discussing favoured purchases. It had the potential to be a lovely positive thread. And yet...

If another OP ever posts "Do you shop at Aldi and if not, why not?" then some negativity is to be expected. Jump right in there with all your criticisms.

But for this thread, perhaps your "nothing, because reasons" just wasn't answering the actual question.

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/11/2023 12:58

As contrast, the local Morrisons here is in the town centre and the one time I went, was the most appalling shopping experience I’ve had.

Aldi, on the other hand, has polite and friendly staff, most of the things I want and a speedy shopping experience. I’d like a bigger variety of desserts and I wish there was some gluten free bread, but otherwise, it’s fine.

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 13:10

Breadahead · 01/11/2023 12:30

No you didn't. The question was what do you buy from Aldi, and your rather pointless post was nothing, it's a hellhole full of DV etc.

Is your motivation wasn't to feel superior then what on earth was it? Just own it

Mumsnet question: What do trick or treaters get at your house?
@Breadahead's answer: Sweet FA

Just own it indeed.

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 13:11

@skilpadde - I take your point about this having the potential to be a lovely positive positive thread, and I apologise for my part in derailing it. I won't revisit it.

CanIPetThatDawg · 01/11/2023 13:16

There is a 'what do you buy in Aldi?' thread at least once a week. I'm sure the OP will cope.

bendmeoverbackwards · 01/11/2023 13:16

Can’t believe no one has mentioned the choc chip brioche loaf yet! Put a slice in the toaster and the chocolate goes all melty, yum 😋

That's rather poor form, searching and quoting other threads.

And I think there's a distinction actually. If you don't go to Aldi, you don't go to Aldi, so you don't need to tell us you buy nothing there. If trick or treaters come to my door, that's an actual situation, so saying they wouldn't get anything is a reasonable answer.

Bacarach · 01/11/2023 13:18

Our main grocery shopping apart from frozen that we buy from Farmfoods next door!
Aldi steak is amazing as is their chicken, pork chops and sausages.

We also buy toiletries from Aldi and their dark fruit cider to make pork in cider which with their nice pink lady apples is amazing in itself.

Their cold pressed rapeseed oil and olive oils are brilliant value as well

I agree. I also love the fact that they are sold in glass bottles.

As previously mentioned, nuts (almonds & walnut halves mostly) are also excellent. I'm going to try the dried fruit as well.

Sliced fruit loaf is superb and a kind colleague gave me a fantastic bottle of Aldi Zweigelt wine last year, which I look for every time I'm in but have never seen again. ☹

Are the florentines located in the bakery section or the cake/biscuit section?

Lastly, if any of you have an American Express credit card there is currently a cashback offer of 5% on all purchases at Aldi (and also Next & Currys) up to a maximum of £10 until 25 November. You need to 'add' the offer to your card via your online account.

Oh don't!!! 🤩

ScribblingPixie · 01/11/2023 13:36

...rhubarb and rose handwash

Ooh!!

Slidingsocks · 01/11/2023 13:37

Their Lacura caviar face cream is amazing. It's supposed to be a dupe for La Prairie. I used to use Decleor a £90+ a pot, but this stuff at about £12 is just as good. Also the Rose Facial Oil. And you can buy these online, which is great, as they don't always have them in.

Edited

Sometimes they have the caviar face cream 'under the counter' or in a back room and you have to ask for it. That's been the case in two stores for me. I'm going to try the same with the rose oil, which I would love.

PawsisShady · 01/11/2023 14:16

I do my main shop there
At the minute I would recommend the Christmas snacks like apple stollen etc and these biscuits. Also these ice lollies! I've just got back from there
Whipped cream cheese is lovely if they have it, the s'mores desserts in the fridge section (like GU ones, microwave)
Fresh pizzas specially selected
Cheese is good
San pelligrino fruit can dupes

TBH I've never had anything I'm not keen on

PawsisShady · 01/11/2023 14:17

Oh I forgot
Metro bread rolls
Pretzel chocolate

HappyAsASandboy · 01/11/2023 14:33

I do my main shop there, so everything unless I can't find it and have to go elsewhere!

Things I deliberately don't buy anywhere else, I wait for Aldi are;

Cheap chocolate spread
Passata
Soup
Milano salami
Porridge pots for camping
Wine
Norpak spreadable butter (closest to Lurpak by a mile!).

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 01/11/2023 14:37

Not a massive fan of ready meals but Aldi do a fresh chicken & tomato pasta bake, just need to add a little cheese to the top but it's pretty tasty and does 4 meals

SM4713 · 01/11/2023 15:01

OP- You asked about wine. I buy from various shops, so can't always recall which were good. I 'think' these were good though:
Cambalala Sauvignon Blanc 75cl | ALDI
Specially Selected Chile Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 75cl | ALDI
Freeman's Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 75cl | ALDI

ManchesterLu · 01/11/2023 15:27

I grab cereal as it's so much cheaper than what I used to get. Also get microwave rice and tinned veg/fruit etc.

I've never done a full shop there but I do go and get a basket full every now and then.

BIWI · 01/11/2023 15:32

GarlicBroccolini · 01/11/2023 12:35

Oh and if anyone could recommend a cheap wine, I’d be forever grateful. Hate Chardonnay, love a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon blanc

@GarlicBroccolini

This is a current favourite and only £4.09!
