What do you buy from Aldi?

What’s worth getting? Especially as part of a general shop

Bells3032 · 01/11/2023 11:45

the protein chocolate mousse...yum

DottieMoon · 01/11/2023 11:48

The thai kits are really good and the specially selected pestos are better then any shop pesto in my opinion

BoardOfMuffins · 01/11/2023 11:50

@Zimunya but if your answer is nothing then what is the point of writing on this thread apart from being negative about it? There are probably dozens of other threads your contribution would be helpful on.

@ScribblingPixie yes, the peanut butter! I had forgotten about that and pesto we get their pesto too. Lovely to get some suggestions of things I will pick up next time I am there mainly now jams, protein chocolate mousse and Christmas things.

Spareus · 01/11/2023 11:55

The Red Fox cheese is superb 🧀

Isoqueen · 01/11/2023 12:04

The ALDIs here in Australia are well stocked, large ,bright and just as good as all the other grocery stores to look at, only about 2/3 the price for often better stuff. Great local fruit and veg and dairy products and a lot of the meat is very good, too. I have never noticed any screaming kids and I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a ‘hellhole’. Perhaps the kids here are better behaved! I did, however, go into an Aldi when visiting Budapest and that was nothing like the Australian stores-rather dark and not crash hot. Maybe they adapt to where they are situated in some way?

Igmum · 01/11/2023 12:04

The veg and salad stuff - so much tastier than other supermarkets
Definitely the steaks
Aldi is my main shop - things are so much cheaper. Occasionally we need a Tescos top-up with things Aldi doesn't sell and I do like to pop in to M&S but for most things Aldi is excellent.
Watch out for the expensive wines they get in for Christmas. Some of those are glorious.

Samanabanana · 01/11/2023 12:09

Aldi washing pods/liquid/fabric conditioner is the best, much better than any branded stuff. Washes better, smells better!

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 12:15

@BoardOfMuffins - if Mumsnet banned all posters who said anything remotely negative it would be a very quiet place.

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 10:47

Nothing. Our local Aldi is a hell-hole, disorganised and shambolic, and filled with screaming children and yelling parents. I know it's cheaper, but Morrisons is not significantly more expensive, and at least I can find what I need there without worrying about witnessing domestic abuse in the midst of the grocery shopping.

I think this speaks more to your particular area rather than Aldi tbh. And Morrisons isn't posh either - if you want to feel superior to Aldi shoppers then you're going to need Sainsburys as a bare minimum

I've said from the start that this speaks more to our particular area than Aldi as a whole. So no argument there. I have neither desire nor need to feel superior. It's astonishing that a lot of posters are so furious that my reality of shopping at Aldi doesn't match theirs, and therefore need to attach other reasons to what are simple geographic and demographic differences.

Tripl3Jump · 01/11/2023 12:26

Coffee and wine.

I know this is a shopping list, but I've taken it as advice - thank you :)

twattydogshavetwattypeople · 01/11/2023 12:28

Nothing, but only because they don't deliver.

No you didn't. The question was what do you buy from Aldi, and your rather pointless post was nothing, it's a hellhole full of DV etc.

Is your motivation wasn't to feel superior then what on earth was it? Just own it

Breadahead · 01/11/2023 12:33

Anyway my favourite things are their rhubarb and rose handwash and their salt and pepper chicken pizza.

GarlicBroccolini · 01/11/2023 12:33

Some great recommendations, thanks!

Has anyone tried the non-bio washing liquid? Is it as good as persil?

What about the bathroom cleaner spray? My usual favourite of Cillit Bang is super expensive now but I’m so disappointed with the alternatives I’ve tried

@Breadahead - my motivation was to answer the question. That's how Mumsnet works a lot of the time - questions are asked and answered. Often by (gasp!) people with differing opinions.

@twattydogshavetwattypeople also answered "nothing". It's a perfectly reasonable response.

motherofawhirlwind · 01/11/2023 12:34

Nothing, it's all rubbish

will you lot all keep quiet about the good stuff please? Hard enough to get a parking space for my ancient grains bread, fabulous sushi, protein mousses and the Carlos fries in a box as it is.... 😁

GarlicBroccolini · 01/11/2023 12:35

Oh and if anyone could recommend a cheap wine, I’d be forever grateful. Hate Chardonnay, love a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon blanc

Coriander naan bread and sliced brioche loaf are amazing and the Jammy Jacks in the bakery section. The frozen fish, cheese, tinned tomatoes, olive oil, whole meal rustic bread, bags of half baked rolls and bread, frozen veggie pasties….

A lot of these things sell out though.

Answering nothing to what do you buy from Aldi isn't a "differing opinion" 🤣

Now we do of course know what your opinion is, which is that Aldi is beneath you. You made that clear.

But the thread wasn't asking for your opinion of Aldi, it was asking what you buy there. You don't buy anything there because you are superior, so why bother commenting 😂

Tripl3Jump · 01/11/2023 12:43

Their olive oil is a bargain but again sells out. Ditto their paracetamol, throat lozenges etc. Cut flowers like sunflowers are good value ditto compost. We find it’s getting popular with the cost of living crisis that a lot of the popular stuff gets sold out if you don’t go early enough.

Zimunya · 01/11/2023 12:45

@Breadahead - we see it differently, and that's okay. I'm happy to do that without berating people who have a differing opinion to mine.

XiCi · 01/11/2023 12:46

I like the salmon and prawns en croute, the cheeses, pates and continental meats. The Reed diffusers are good Jo malone dupes. Love the cherry liqueurs at Xmas, exactly the same as the M&S ones.

Avoid fruit and veg, always goes off in a day or two and ends up getting binned.

XiCi · 01/11/2023 12:46

Their cold pressed rapeseed oil and olive oils are brilliant value as well
