Tinned potatoes are fantastic

I used them for the first time yesterday in a soup. It was such a novelty to instantly have a small quantity of peeled and parboiled potatoes! They'll be good to add to any sort of mixed vegetable dish where I want a little bit of potato in there but not loads, like a curry, without having to prep them beforehand. I'm also imagining slicing them up and using them as a hot pot topping.

They’re good to slice and shallow fry. Yum!

BethDuttonsTwin · 31/10/2023 14:57

I don’t like them straight from the can and heated but sliced and fried with a little garlic or onion salt or roasted in the oven, they’re lovely 😋

The Sainsbury's peeled new potatoes in water, 300g for 70p makes excellent 'short notice' potato salad. They are lovely small potatoes.

They always seem very salty and have a kind of spooky texture to me... Mind you it's been 20 years at least since I tried them. Maybe they've improved!

MajorBarbara · 31/10/2023 15:13

My emergency/lazy standby - fry a chopped onion in the bottom of a saucepan. maybe some chopped or minced garlic, too, when it's brown add 1 tin chopped tomatoes, a dash of Tabasco if you like, a whole tin of corned beef cut up into bits, and a tin of potatoes likewise cut up. Maybe some water from the kettle, but not much! Keep it on the heat until it is bubbling away. Feeds 2 (or maybe 3 with bread rolls). Maybe if the tinned tomatoes are the cheaper watery kind, a squirt of purée won't hurt. Could chuck in some frozen peas I guess.

They're nice in the air fryer too, mini roasters

Mumoftwotoddlers · 31/10/2023 15:17

Drained, tossed with a little oil, paprika and a little salt & pepper, air-fried for about 12 minutes at 180°c is amazing! Or sub the paprika for thyme or garlic powder is also really good

Spooky texture? Please elaborate

Danikm151 · 31/10/2023 15:20

these have been a staple in my life for years.

floatingnoodle · 31/10/2023 15:23

They need a good rinse IME but they are good for potato salad or frying as others have said.

My life hack is tinned apple slices. They aren’t in juice/syrup so no added sugar, and they mean it’s so quick and easy to whip up a crumble - just make the topping (extra points for having a bag made up in the freezer) and bung in the oven.

IncompleteSenten · 31/10/2023 15:24

I liked them rolled in olive oil and cooked in the oven.

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 31/10/2023 15:25

I liked them sliced, pan fried until crispy and then added to a Spanish omelette, or just simply fried up with onions and garlic as a 'side'

I like the sound of that!

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 31/10/2023 15:28

Also nice thinly sliced on a pizza, my particular favourite is with Parma ham, aparagus and mozzarella

Perfect for Hallowe'en!

TwilightSkies · 31/10/2023 15:30

Can confirm they are lovely air-fried! Bit of olive oil, salt and chilli flakes.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 31/10/2023 15:31

I love them in veg curries or bean chilli, saves doing rice with them too.

Soontobe60 · 31/10/2023 15:33

I make a cheese, onion and potato pie with tinned potatoes. And ready rolled pastry. And tinned onions! 😂

I do grate the cheese myself - I draw the line at ready grated cheese!

TreesInTheMorning · 31/10/2023 15:50

I agree! A relatively new discovery for me as I don’t eat tinned food often and spuds equally as rarely but they are delicious.

HighywayToHell · 31/10/2023 16:06

I really dont like them, i think its the texture. DP loves them and had them with everything, now we have moved in together they are banned from the house. I see him looking at them longingly in the supermarket.

Butter beans would be a great addition to this.

Ooh this sounds good. Any chance you could share your recipe?

ThreeRingCircus · 31/10/2023 16:13

I can confirm they are delicious coated in oil and seasoning and cooked in the air fryer BUT mine have a tendency to explode so I think I'm doing it wrong 🤣.

They're also very good fried up with an onion, add beaten eggs and some grated cheese and put under the grill for a quick frittata.

ChimChimeny · 31/10/2023 16:15

We always had them in corned beef hash on caravan holidays when I was a kid.
I usually out a couple of tins in the food bank collection but I've added them to my shopping list to try and frying some
