Tinned potatoes are fantastic

I used them for the first time yesterday in a soup. It was such a novelty to instantly have a small quantity of peeled and parboiled potatoes! They'll be good to add to any sort of mixed vegetable dish where I want a little bit of potato in there but not loads, like a curry, without having to prep them beforehand. I'm also imagining slicing them up and using them as a hot pot topping.

have just discovered how amazing they are in the air fryer - now on my shopping list permanently

I really dont like them, i think its the texture. DP loves them and had them with everything, now we have moved in together they are banned from the house. I see him looking at them longingly in the supermarket.

Banned? Really? That's awful. Poor Dp

They’re good to slice and shallow fry. Yum!

Yes but you have to be super careful because there's so much water in them they spurt like crazy when at high heat with oil

Poor bloke

He’s not that badly hard done by, he has his dinners cooked for him now, he would choose that over tinned potatoes any day

They need a good rinse IME but they are good for potato salad or frying as others have said.

My life hack is tinned apple slices. They aren’t in juice/syrup so no added sugar, and they mean it’s so quick and easy to whip up a crumble - just make the topping (extra points for having a bag made up in the freezer) and bung in the oven.

Where do you buy the tinned apple slices please @floatingnoodle ?

BarbaraofSeville · 31/10/2023 16:32

They're very good as a shortcut in a Spanish omelette too.

I'm also very thankful to the Mumsnetter who posted the tip about slicing them using an egg slicer. It's so obvious, but I'd never thought of doing that.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/10/2023 16:34

@Soontobe60 ha, my kind of cook!!

Can confirm they are lovely air-fried! Bit of olive oil, salt and chilli flakes.

Gonna try this, how long to cook?

BoardOfMuffins · 31/10/2023 16:38

I halve them and add them into a slow cooker to make an easy one pot honey, garlic chicken (or Italian garlic chicken) with carrots and onions. So versatile and there is a lot of snobbery against them poor things.

@floatingnoodle I would also be interested in the sliced apples. I make a "pat in pan" no roll pastry base apple "slab" dessert.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/10/2023 16:41

I started using them in the camper van but now use them at home if I run out of potatoes. They are great roasted in the air fryer, sliced and used in a frittata or added to a hot pot.

They always seem very salty and have a kind of spooky texture to me... Mind you it's been 20 years at least since I tried them. Maybe they've improved!

I agree. I want to like them but every time I have them they're kind of schmushy ish

combioven · 31/10/2023 16:53

I have them straight out of the tin! Have done since I was a kid, love them :)

Lilithlogic · 31/10/2023 16:54

Cannot stand the waxy texture and wierd taste

Onevelvetmorning · 31/10/2023 16:54

Going to try these. Thanks!

Exactly this! I'm not a food snob by any means, love me a chip butty in white sliced Grin But tinned potatoes just...nah...

Cinateel · 31/10/2023 17:04

Slightly different, but I've always hated instant mash, until I tried Idaho Mash from Waitrose. Excellent!

inigomontoyahwillcox · 31/10/2023 17:04

I made corned beef hash the other day with tinned potatoes, sliced onions, Worcestershire sauce and corned beef (obvs) - it was bloody lovely (and took all of 10 minutes to make).

You can get it in Sainsbury's too. I use it for shepherd's pie.

REP22 · 31/10/2023 17:16

I agree, I love them! Nadiya Hussain did a lovely roast potato traybake with tinned spuds in one of her programmes.

Also, a few years ago I was very very unwell and in and out of hospital. When at home, tinned potatoes were an utter godsend as they were so easy to deal with.

boobybum · 31/10/2023 16:12

Ooh this sounds good. Any chance you could share your recipe?

It’s easy!
Open, Rinse and Drain a large tin of potatoes, cut into smaller pieces.
Open a tin of Lazy onions.
Grate a big block of strong cheddar cheese.
Mix everything in a bowl, season well, throw in a spoonful of English mustard. Beat 2 eggs and mix most into this - save a bit to egg wash the pastry.
line a tin with short rust pastry, throw in the above - pile it high - cover with more pastry. Egg wash then bake for 45 mins. Let it cool slightly before serving.
If I have any cream cheese, I’ll add some of that in too.

Nippi · 31/10/2023 17:28

Some good ideas here. I keep a tin in for soup if I can't be bothered to peel potatoes.
Haven't had corned beef for about 50 years (school dinners). Can it be as bad as I remember?

floatingnoodle · 31/10/2023 17:28

@bendmeoverbackwards@BoardOfMuffins Sainsbury’s!

BoardOfMuffins · 31/10/2023 18:14

@floatingnoodle excellent, thank you. That makes it so much easier than peeling apples and finding all those hidden bruises Grin

chattyness · 31/10/2023 18:21

They have improved so much in recent years. I used to thing they had a horrible tang but they don't anymore. I buy the growers harvest brand from tesco .Give them a good rinse and then use as I want, they never go mushy ,they are great for adding to a stew in the slow cooker as they stay nice and firm.
