Tinned potatoes are fantastic

I used them for the first time yesterday in a soup. It was such a novelty to instantly have a small quantity of peeled and parboiled potatoes! They'll be good to add to any sort of mixed vegetable dish where I want a little bit of potato in there but not loads, like a curry, without having to prep them beforehand. I'm also imagining slicing them up and using them as a hot pot topping.

I don't have an air fryer so can't attest to it but have been told more than once that they're excellent cooked in one.

I wouldn't say they overly excite me but I do always have a couple of tins in the cupboard. I'm chronically unwell and lengthy cooking or using the oven has become a bit trickier for me. They're brilliant and so convenient for adding to one pot meals on the hob. I mainly use them to bulk out a favourite lentil curry recipe and they're perfect with it and a great deal easier than peeling, boiling potatoes and the washing up that comes with.

Another that loves them done in the air fryer. Especially done with garlic.

for me the two keys to making them good are to dry them off - seems to stop them popping - and not shaking the basket while cooking.

I like the sound of that!

I do too-trying to think of a vegetarian alternative, maybe soy mince or lentils.

My DP does something with them in an air-fryer, think rolls them in stock cubes before air-frying. I might try it with marmite!

This thread is making me feel hungry! 😀 I’ve got to give this a try, don’t think I’ve ever tried them before.

If I’m heating up soup, do I just pop a few in the soup pan while it’s heating the soup?

Oblomov23 · 01/11/2023 05:34

I'm not keen on them. I find the texture a bit wierd. I eat most things but I never buy tinned potatoes.

DinosApple · 01/11/2023 07:13

Fried with salt and a little chilli powder. Mmm.
Haven't had it for years but I'm adding them to the shopping list now!

HareSong · 01/11/2023 07:17

They’re really handy for a quick sag aloo, and yes, a frittata. The Sainsbury ones have a good texture and not the weird flavour I remember from childhood.

I think people mean if you are making soup from scratch.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 01/11/2023 09:15

If you want to heat them in a pre-made soup, I would slice, halve or quarter, depending on size, and just warm up gently as you normally would.

Drain, rinse, dry them off for a bit on a tea towel and then oil, salt and pepper them. Air fry for 20 mins or oven roast and they are perfectly good little roasties!

I honestly can't see the point when I have a larder with real potatoes in it.

They are real potatoes, just peeled and in a tin. If you don't like them then crack on with your 'real' potatoes

Ok I havent read the whole thread, but whoever mentioned putting them in a Spanish omelette best not be having me on!!!

GENIUS

can't believe I've never thought of this 🤦🏻‍♀️ what a hack 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/11/2023 15:42

They're really useful in slow cooker stews and curries, too!

I think I was one of a few that mentioned putting them in a Spanish omelette. I fry them in a little oil/butter first so they go a bit crispy round the edges and then add them to the omelette to heat through. I'm a 'mix everything together' omelette maker which is why I fry off the tates first.

Might have one for tea actually

Redlarge · 01/11/2023 15:50

I make potatoes and pea curry with these. Filling, cheap, and easy.

1 onion
Garlic
Ginger
Curry powder
Tinned tomatoes
Chicken stock
Tinned potatoes
Frozen peas

Spiniach if i have it.

Freezes well, too.

They are a store cupboard staple here. I like them as a base for Russian salad with diced vegetables & salami or sausage or left over ham for a quick filling lunch.
Also good in Spanish omelette, or heated through with wilting spinach (frozen spinach works for this) and a scatter of spices as a side dish with curry.

Oh i love Russian salad. So lovely on crusty bread with cold meats and pickled beetroot. We had this lots as kids.

Redlarge · 01/11/2023 15:53

I quite often fry them in chilli oil and serve over rocket leaves and sliced red pepper... try it its lush.

ElinorDashwood68 · 01/11/2023 15:59

Added to my next click and collect! I can use to make corned beef hash as have a tin that's been in my cupboard for ages

Yes you can just pop them into your pan of soup, Even if it's tinned soup. I do it😁

Ooh yes. Dead easy. X

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 01/11/2023 16:04

Interesting!

I will have to try them.

I do occasionally buy the preboiled potatoes from the fridge section. but those have to be eaten within a few days... Tinned ones would be a bit of a game changer 😃

Sgtmajormummy · 01/11/2023 16:29

When the DC were little we’d have them sliced and fried with onions in the same pan as fish fingers or sausages.
They came to be known as “punky potatoes”, not “spooky”.

I’m certainly going to try them in the air fryer after reading this thread.

DuploTrain · 01/11/2023 16:36

I have to confess to never trying them but I’m definitely going to now.
I love a corned beef hash but always hate how long it takes for raw potatoes to cook.
