Tinned potatoes are fantastic

I used them for the first time yesterday in a soup. It was such a novelty to instantly have a small quantity of peeled and parboiled potatoes! They'll be good to add to any sort of mixed vegetable dish where I want a little bit of potato in there but not loads, like a curry, without having to prep them beforehand. I'm also imagining slicing them up and using them as a hot pot topping.

I always do two cans a week for the food bank. Apparently food banks get lots of pasta and rice but not nearly enough tins of potatoes

A quick store cupboard lunch I make with tinned potatoes is a potato salad with pickled herrings (rollmops). It's a good way to use up any leftover veg like broccoli or carrots.
I drain and chop the fish, then mix it with something creamy, plain yoghurt or tzatziki or sour cream & chive dip etc.
Add any vegetables, or avocado or beetroot or lettuce etc. It's good served with rye bread, another store cupboard staple.

If you decide to try it, remember that the pickled herrings have to be stored in the fridge.

Yes you can just pop them into your pan of soup, Even if it's tinned soup. I do it😁

Thanks - they are going on my shopping list!

I think I will try @AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras ’s tip of chopping them up smaller too.

@MindfullyAmazedHorse chopping them up helps them cook better so definitely do that but I guarantee you'll love it 😉

WetBandits · 01/11/2023 20:04

I definitely don’t eat them cold straight from the tin….Blush

I honestly can’t see the point in joining a thread with a post like that

Oh I see. And there was me thinking it was a public forum and anyone could post whatever they want. Confused

menopausalmare · 01/11/2023 22:19

They remind me of guide camp, especially with marrowfat peas and mince.

Um, really? Compared to a proper new potato?

Yes. I dislike new potatoes immensely. Much prefer using the old jackets or tinned.

Maddy70 · 01/11/2023 23:34

They really are disgusting. They taste different, have a different texture etc. Can't believe anyone is thinking they're OK?
Tinned potatoes are camping food

I didn’t say you couldn’t. I said I didn’t see the point in it. Two very different things. As you say, anyone can post whatever they want, including me.

SpringingJoy · 01/11/2023 23:53

We've always got a tin or two in the cupboard but only ever used in omelette.

I've tried them before in soups and stews and once with gravy over but those were a hard nope from me. In omelette though you literally can't tell the difference and its sooooo much easier.

Hellers · 01/11/2023 23:57

I don't think you can buy tinned potatoes here in the Republic of Ireland (at least I haven't seen them) which is only right as if the spuds don't spring forth to us ripe and delicious from God's great earth then we want nothing to do with them (we're still slowly adapting to frozen mash, for example, tinned is surely the work of the Devil).

WellDuh · 02/11/2023 00:02

This has brought back memories! When I was a kid, my mother would take us (3 kids) on caravan holidays but would take a weeks worth of food with us. One meal would always be: tinned potatoes, tinned mince in gravy, tinned peas and tinned carrots! As a student I made the same meal almost weekly. Not had them in years!

Zonder · 02/11/2023 07:02

I love them cold straight out of the tin! Or heated up just as they come.

MadamVastra · 02/11/2023 10:10

Thank you @Sexlivesofthepotatomen

I bought a tin of daucy after work (no own brand!) but still only £1.20 so not too shabby.

I can confirm that Spanish omelette with tinned potatoes is just as lovely as with a fresh potato! At least 25 mins saved and I am very happy with that 😃

mindutopia · 02/11/2023 11:14

😂There was a thread on this a few years ago and it reminded me at the time how much I love them. And this has reminded me again. As a child, I ate A LOT of tinned potatoes. A LOT of tinned veg in general actually. God only knows why, as they aren't the cheapest way to eat a potato, but my mum couldn't cook, so I suspect boiling or roasting a potato was actually a stretch (no, I cannot actually remember ever having mash that wasn't from the box or a roast potato at home in my entire childhood). I got them a few years ago on holiday because we needed something for dinner from a teeny petrol station in the middle of the mountains in Wales, and it was like the taste of childhood!

Deathraystare · 02/11/2023 11:36

I found them very useful when I was unemployed. I still like to keep a tin in though. There is only me (though I share a kitchen) so really no room for fresh ones. They do taste 'tinny' though.

Don't eat them then?

I think they are OK, more than OK, as do practically all of the other people on the thread...guess we're all wrong then. Weird that you'd come on a thread with the title "tinned potatoes are fantastic" to say how disgusting they are, why not just scroll on by?

But then a lot of your posts are snippy/unnecessary/goady

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm going to try corned beef hash with them next, probably with poached eggs on top
