Tinned potatoes are fantastic

I used them for the first time yesterday in a soup. It was such a novelty to instantly have a small quantity of peeled and parboiled potatoes! They'll be good to add to any sort of mixed vegetable dish where I want a little bit of potato in there but not loads, like a curry, without having to prep them beforehand. I'm also imagining slicing them up and using them as a hot pot topping.

I've been brought up having tinned potatoes on caravan holidays. I still use them a couple of times a month. As other have said sliced up and fried in a bit of butter with some garlic salt and pepper they are delicious.

Another benefit is because they are pre cooked and cooled is that they are high is resistant starch so will spike your blood sugar less than regular potatoes.

Always chuck a can into beef stew and kids love them. Even DD who doesn't eat potatoes eats them in a stew

I use them in my air fryer, sprinkled with fresh parsley and thyme, sea salt and black pepper. They make a lovely side to chicken or steak. Oh and are cheap as chips in Asda!

Unless they have changed in 50 years, they are weird. Texture of a sponge and odd flavour. The idea takes me back to rainy campsites in 1970.

I have a friend who swears by them for roasties. I have also discovered the delights of tinned carrots for cream of carrot soup. I bung in with the water it comes in in the tin and then add copious amounts of nutmeg and a little cream. It makes the most delicious soup IMO

I think they must have changed, they're not spongy. Can't do much about your memories of rainy caravan holidays though.

I have chronic illness and can't cook much anymore and I'm surprised at the things I've tried that I used to be snobby about. They really are pretty fantastic.

AdoraBell · 31/10/2023 20:15

I don’t like them but they are handy, haven’t tried them in a soup though. Maybe I’ll try them in a soup or stew.

I'm another tinned spud fan. They're always in the cupboard but I only really use them in corned beef hash.

It's a shame really as my nan used to give them to us as a treat. I've no idea what she did with them but they were delicious in her Sunday dinner.

I want corned beef hash now.

AdaColeman · 31/10/2023 20:37

They are a store cupboard staple here. I like them as a base for Russian salad with diced vegetables & salami or sausage or left over ham for a quick filling lunch.
Also good in Spanish omelette, or heated through with wilting spinach (frozen spinach works for this) and a scatter of spices as a side dish with curry.

Cooked with lots of salted butter until browned and crispy on the outside I bet! Even better that way than in soup.

Sorry @junbean , meant to add sorry to read about your illness Flowers

I haven't had them for decades, and there's a reason for that. I can't cope with their texure for some reason, and they are one thing that I happily consigned to the 'I'm never eating them again' list as soon as I moved away from home in my early 20's. Butter beans are on the list as well. Grin

NancyJoan · 31/10/2023 20:49

My mum was mad for them in her Slimming World era in the late 80s. I think of them as hard, pallid waxy little lumps, but sounds like they have moved on.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 31/10/2023 21:08

Love em!! Feels so wrong but so right!

Justtootired55 · 31/10/2023 22:25

I love them in a frittata. Good hot or cold.

Drain, rinse, dry them off for a bit on a tea towel and then oil, salt and pepper them. Air fry for 20 mins or oven roast and they are perfectly good little roasties!

I'm in the US so availability is different I'm sure, but I've been impressed with the quality of all the canned veggies I've tried. There's one brand that's a bit more expensive and considering they're pretty cheap to begin with it's worth it. Some come already seasoned Southern style like cabbage, mustard greens, etc. so all I have to do is heat. They go really well with cornbread, but I realize that's all very regional. I've also discovered that instant potatoes are really good if I get the kind that has added ingredients like cheese, bacon, etc. and I use milk instead of water. Plain instant are easily jazzed up in a similar manner if the varieties aren't available. You can also make a nice potato soup with them, just add some sautéed onions, garlic and milk. I think frozen veg might be a little better in quality, but I have stomach issues so the softer texture from canned is perfect for me.

Bigcoatweather · 01/11/2023 00:18

I’ve always thought they taste like plasticine….

AutumnFroglets · 01/11/2023 00:28

I've always had them (reheated) with my quiche and salad in the summer, with salad cream drizzled over them. So lovely

Um, really? Compared to a proper new potato?
