What date do they break up for Christmas?

And was half term earlier than normal?

I'm in North Yorkshire and our schools broke up on Friday with half term this coming week.

Halloween is usually in half term so it seems to be the usual time for us but they aren't breaking up for Christmas until Friday 22nd December, which is the latest it's ever been.

Back to school on Tuesday (tomorrow is inset day) and we break up on 21st December.

Crunchymum · 29/10/2023 18:32

Back tomorrow, break up Wednesday 20th December and back on 9th January.
London.

CornishTiger · 29/10/2023 18:35

15th Dec and back on 8th Jan. exceptional inset days apparently. Not happy especially as I work Christmas. Plus we have just had a two week half term too. It’s impossible to find childcare for the extra week and over Christmas.

Hampshire, back tomorrow, finish 15th, back 2nd Jan, so much better than those years where they slog on exhausted till a few days before Christmas then can't go back till about the 8th when everyone is climbing the walls with boredom.

moleeye · 29/10/2023 18:38

Break up Weds 20th (Half day) and just realised they are back on 9th Jan!!!!

voxnihili · 29/10/2023 18:43

SE London but DD is at school in a different LA to where I work. She had last week off and should be back tomorrow. I also had last week but not back until 6th November. Both finish 20th December for Christmas but she’s back 2nd January and I’m back on the 8th. We’re then in sync until summer when she finishes on 19th July but I don’t finish until the 25th.

Orangewall · 29/10/2023 18:43

2 bloody weeks of half term here that we’re halfway through, term ends on 15th December. They really snuck in the extra week as well, it just appeared on the calendar in October…

Surprisingcomment · 29/10/2023 18:43

Meant to be the 21st but I’m keeping them off from week beg mon 18 th (will just say they are unwell) as my youngest is immunocompromised and I don’t want the worry of accessing medical care over the Xmas week so if we keep them off early we will hopefully avoid any last min germs that’ll impact xmas !

Just starting our half-term holiday here (West Yorkshire) and my children break up for Christmas on December 22nd. I love a late Christmas break-up as the countdown to the big day is not so torturous and then there are a full two weeks to enjoy pantos, cinema trips, play with Christmas toys and just generally relax. It always seems a ‘waste’ of a week if the break-up is earlier because it’s always a case of wishing time away.

TeenLifeMum · 29/10/2023 18:50

I know it’s daft but I’m a bit sad and feel robbed of the week before Christmas with my dc at home. I work between Christmas and new year so the run up to Christmas is our family time before the extended family all arrive.

Nearlyadoctor · 29/10/2023 18:52

Back tomorrow, break up 15th Dec - back 2nd Jan. we’re in Devon

PortalooSunset · 29/10/2023 18:53

Back tomorrow (dc had last week and Thursday/Friday of the week before off). Break up 1pm on 20th December. Then term officially starts again 4th Jan but due to inset days dc actually start back on the 8th.

avocadotofu · 29/10/2023 18:59

I'm back to work tomorrow and finish on 20th December which is a lot later than usual. DS has two weeks off for October half term and he finishes on the 22nd December.

NightNightJohnBoy · 29/10/2023 19:00

Back to school tomorrow after a 1 week half term.
In school til Thurs 21st Dec, which I like, as we go straight in to Christmas then loads of time after to recover, sit around and drink gin.
Not back to school til 9th - lovely, I thought, until I realised that we pay for it by being in school til Weds 24th July!! Sad

I’m in Scotland but we are back after 2 weeks off tomorrow and break up on the 22nd. Can’t imagine going back on the 2nd of January! We don’t go back until the 8th

Us too.

We call it the October holidays, or the tattie picking holidays (but no one does that now...), not sure why we never talk about half term.
We had 8 week term between the end of summer holidays and start of these holidays. There's 2 inservice days mid Nov, and it's another 8 week term until the 2 week Christmas break (for our council area, I know our neighbouring council had inservice in September instead).

MumblesParty · 29/10/2023 19:07

Half term was the week before last , went back last Monday. Break up for Christmas 22nd. This half of term will be 9 weeks long!

Iloveshoes123 · 29/10/2023 19:09

Inset day tomorrow, back on Tuesday. Finish on the 15th for Christmas and back on the 2nd.

Cyclingforcake · 29/10/2023 19:09

West Yorkshire - just finishing half term. Christmas holidays 15th December to 3rd January.
On the North Yorkshire border so plenty of families have children in both counties and are struggling.

My DCs are back tomorrow after a 2 week half term and finish on Thursday 21st.

I'm surprised how many other schools have had a 2 week October half term, I thought we were the only ones. Do you get shorter holidays at other times? We get two extra weeks holiday so DCs only at school for 37 weeks but do longer days.

Nottinghamshire so we get 2 weeks now, then break up around 22nd for Xmas I think it is (I know it's late).

Butterflytown · 29/10/2023 19:18

Back tomorrow after half term last week. Break up on Fri 15th December which seems very early, then back on Tuesday 2nd Jan which again seems very early, although easier in some ways to all be back to school and work on the same day. I’m

WYorkshireRose · 29/10/2023 19:24

DS's school (W Yorks) half term was last week and this week (23rd - 3rd). Break up for Christmas Friday 15th.

Couldn’t disagree more! Late break-up is an absolute nightmare if you work term time and is particularly frenetic for us as DD is a church chorister. The panto is pretty much the only festive attraction to continue into January. Everything else around here finishes at New Year. That second week of the holidays is going to require some very careful planning. I’d much rather have a leisurely week at the end of Advent to decorate the Christmas cake / make family cards and wrap their presents / bake mince pies and build the gingerbread house / generally enjoy the build-up.

mamaduckbone · 29/10/2023 19:34

We've been back for a week already and don't break up until the 22nd. 9 weeks!

Same here. Broke up last year on 23rd December. Loved the time after Christmas and New Year. Going abroad after New Years again this year
