I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

@natoeave I don't want to buy
I want to rent
I'm not in the financial position to buy hence me looking for rented homes.

My NDN is a single, working woman, mid 30s,no dependent children and she has a 2 bed brand new HA property. She was in a private rented house and landlord decided to sell and she applied to HA and got a house.

Edited

I know quite a few people like that but the difference is, as PP pointed out. They didn't already have a property. They applied and got given a 2 bed as that was the smallest available. Some places don't even have that many one-beds to give out anyway so a 2 bed is the minimum.

@loandbeholdd Mines also sim only Giffgaff is my preference.

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:58

It's the 3 beds in my area that gets the most bids
And the odd 4 bed -but they are few and far between I think
The 3 beds normally get over 500 people bidding on those

People can be so ignorant and cuntish about how social housing works.

OP, you probably will be offered a two bedroom house eventually in the Middlesbrough area. I hope you are. As you know (and many posters don't!) there is lots of social housing in our area. I'm a single woman with a two bed HA flat in a beautiful area of the North East.

I bought my kids up in a three bed HA house, after they left home I downsized to a one-bed house (because it was in an area I'd always wanted to live in), realised that it was crap not having a room for family and friends to stay so started bidding on two-beds and after about 18 months moved here. I was offered two others before I accepted this, but they weren't in the area I wanted.

Housing Associations want good tenants so, if like me, you have a good housing record, no rent arrears or complaints, are working, have local connections and good references, then you WILL be considered. There will always be people ahead of you (eg homeless, medical needs) but often they don't accept the offers. I was 6 on the list when I bid for my current home. Good luck OP.

Lifeetc · 26/10/2023 22:01

I genuinely do not understand how you can work full time and have no children but can't afford the rent of £500 pcm.

Nothankyou22 · 26/10/2023 22:03

I think it depends on the area and HA, mine is HA due to lack of private rentals after a section 21 and some allow under occupancy, whilst others have to have local connection for x amount of years & need for that particular house size etc.
There were no 3 beds in 2021 when my landlord sold up, so was given a 2 bed and told to use homeswapper, I had no luck as my rent is really high so went back on the bidding system and was offered a 3 bed in two months because I was the only one who had local connection and the need for the third bedroom.

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 22:04

@Thatsafinememory I honestly hate not having a room for visiting friends etc
With my housing association we seem to get forgot about as they invest all their money in houses.
I really hope so
Hopefully this time next year

If you don't like where you are now...I don't understand why you aren't looking for a different one bed place? What are you going to do with a second bedroom anyway?

Seriously?

Because single, childfree people don't have home offices, guests, hobbies, things to store?

So tired of the opinions that only parents deserve anything decent. God knows it's people like the OP whose taxes finance all the benefits for those who take more than their fair share from society. Give her a break.

I don't see why anyone in social housing needs a spare bedroom.

EmeraldTheSeahorse · 26/10/2023 22:06

im surprised it allows you to bid. In my area you have to have at least 1 child under 16 to bid on houses

Comedycook · 26/10/2023 22:07

Unless they're disabled obviously. Otherwise you have enough bedrooms for the people in the property. One adult equals one bedroom.

It’s not the parents that deserve the room it’s the child/children!

Me neither. Visiting friends... 🙄

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 22:07

@EmeraldTheSeahorse with my housing association you just register and it goes off your date you registered
They ask for 2 forms of ID
A previous landlord reference and 2 payslips

Viviennemary · 26/10/2023 22:08

Why do you need two bedrooms. I suppose you might get one in a not so popular area.

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 22:09

I wonder those in social housing who agree that people without children should only be allowed 1 bed.
So when your kids turn 18 and move off for uni etc ... you and your partner can leave your rented accommodation house (as you don't need it now ) and move into a 1 bed flat ?
Obviously those in social housing only

OP posts:
Comedycook · 26/10/2023 22:09

It's actually laughable to say you need your social housing property to have a spare guest bedroom.

More people = more rooms surely? it's just simple arithmetic. Nothing to do with parental status . People are assuming that a family with more than 2 bed rooms... are only 'parents' but for example a family of adult siblings could live together.

That would mean, more than 2 people, so 2 beds. But not 'parents'.
in the UK it's just uncommon for people to be living together like that.

Nobody 'needs' a home office, guestroom, hobbies/things to store are a choice if you have a small house then don't pick up hobbies that have loads of stuff. Things like sofa beds actually exist.

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 22:10

@Comedycook you clearly have an issue with it
My housing association thankfully doesn't
It's just a matter of how long you wait
I'm hoping it's not much longer

Keep looking for a swap as well. Somebody might not be able to manage their garden or really want your area. Good luck

My first thought too!

You're welcome. I don't know why people get so riled up about social housing. Jealousy, snobbishness, who knows?

Anyway, I would have been using the same bidding website as you as I'm not far away and I'm in a wonderful new build with great neighbours and a perfect location (I wasn't even in the Tees Valley when I was bidding, I was over the border).

So don't give up hope, if you're number 8 on your most recent bid you've got a good chance. Try to ignore the twattish replies, they know nothing except their own prejudices.

funbags3 · 26/10/2023 22:14

Everyone deserves decent living conditions whether you're single or have a family. Unfortunately, housing in the UK is dire.
From what you've said, just keep bidding. You'd never get one in the area I live but you might very well get lucky.
