Is there any chance of a single woman getting a 2 bed housing association house ?

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 20:39

I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

Do they still do the bedroom tax for spare bedrooms?

You could apply for a 1 bed house instead (probably aren't that many about) or a ground floor flat (they are probably reserved for the elderly or people with mobility issues though?)

Hace you spoken to HA?

loandbeholdd · 28/10/2023 11:52

@looking4pup bedroom tax isn't applicable if you pay full rent
Bedroom tax is if you claim benefits

@MinnieL Ah ok. I'm in Birmingham and there are some HAs with their own application process.

Yes sorry I've only just read the rest of the thread. Noticed you may have got a house. As you say if others had bid and needed it more than you they would have got it.

Shocked to hear it be said everyone is guaranteed a social housing property in Middlesbrough. So not true from my work and personal experience. There is a lack of housing and the issue is rising! There would be little chance of a single person being given a 2 bedroom place they would likely be stuck renting a room in a shared place. And unfortunately many of the council housing estates are full of people with issues sad but true.

no, actually that’s not what I’m saying but I see this as a bad faith argument so I won’t even continue explaining what I’m saying.

@Rollwiththepunch
its what I was thinking & probably ithers that just ignored it.

perhaphs you just worded it badly, but it did come across the way @porridgeisbae just said.

AnotherEmma · 28/10/2023 21:00

You say you're in Band 3, OP, but from what you've said, it doesn't sound as if you meet any of these criteria? I guess maybe the list isn't extensive and they haven't listed everything. Seems weird there is no link to the full policy.

@Rollwiththepunch A bad faith argument would imply I have an ulterior motive for saying what I said. I have none. It's actually bad form to imply people have an ulterior motive/are acting in bad faith.

@AnotherEmma Could she comes under 'tenants of the Tees Valley Lettings' ? Whatever that entails.

It says those tenants to be under occupying by 1 bedroom so no,

Orr perhaps you interpreted it poorly? This place is like Twitter sometimes with the virtue signalling lol

I maintain what I said - I could have signed up for disability and I didn’t. Period. If you want to interpret that as being a slight against other people who do claim disability benefits for any of the many valid reasons there are - crack on.

Tbf don’t think you can speak for others who haven’t said anything, but anyway I suggest you stop dragging it out or…carry on..whatever…because as I said, I’m not engaging. And no longer following this thread after this apart from OP’s updates .

good luck Op, I’m rooting for all the single women!

umm who is dragging it out??? You're not engaging?? Not following the thread??

im a single woman, you're not rooting for me.

Cheeseandlobster · 30/10/2023 09:59

I really hope you get the house op. All those being snarky on these threads with their lovely homes complete with shock horror, a spare room, need to ask themselves honestly if they would be able to afford what they have without a dual income. And if they could not afford anything other than a 1 bedroom flat in social housing in a bad area if they were single, whether they would hand on heart not go for a 2 bed house in a nicer area with a garden if they were allowed to. I bet most would if they actually had to walk a mile in your shoes

Crumpleton · 30/10/2023 11:05

Good luck today OP.
Hope it's good news.

@Comedycook as I've said I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a flat
I can't afford private rent and I don't want to risk renting private and them up and selling

I don’t understand why if you work full time you can’t afford to privately rent or even take out a modest mortgage. Middlesborough is one of the cheapest places to live in the UK. The average house price is £57,000. I imagine a 2 bed would be cheaper?

StmMary · 30/10/2023 11:26

Hi, go on right move and look up Yorkshire housing association.. They put places up for rent.. All over.. You don't have to do what you do with the council.. You show intrest. Right move send it to them and they send you a small application to fill in. They will ring you if they've got the property for you to view. There very good company to deal with. Rents are good as well. If your on housing benefit, they'll take you. They do check if course to see if you are who you say you are. They want bank statement and driving licence. Ect.. His look and hope you find somewhere to live that's better for you..

LaurieStrode · 31/10/2023 15:19

Hope you got some good news, OP!

Carpediemmakeitcount · 31/10/2023 19:30

@AnotherEmma she is either living with high medical needs or she was meant to tell us she is in band 4.

I rang the council over 20 years ago to find out what could happen to a man if he was homeless. A man would be last in the queue they prioritise women with children and vulnerable adults first.

porridgeisbae · 31/10/2023 22:52

@Carpediemmakeitcount He could be a man with a disability. In which case his points would be the same as a woman with the same level of disability. Or a homeless man with no income- his points would be the same as a non-pregnant homeless woman with no income.

If someone has an income and no disability then obviously there doesn't tend to be seen as the same duty for the council to house them.

There, fixed it for you.

It was over 20 years ago when I spoke to the council. A male relative was going to be evicted I tried to help him. He found something luckily. I was in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago and all I could see was men on the streets begging no women only men.
