I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

Rolling my eyes at the mean remarks to OP.

She hasn't saddled society with kids she can't afford to raise, so she should content herself with any scraps. But the "families " are oh-so-deserving of larger and better dwellings.

Just another example of rewarding the least prudent among us.

UpUpUpU · 26/10/2023 21:07

I think your only option is to increase your income and move to somewhere better

Greenshake · 26/10/2023 21:10

@LaurieStrode not at all. A lot of us have to make do with the ‘scraps’ that you talk about whilst in full time work and childless.

I work full time !
Unfortunately bonds etc and the private rent market which is ridiculously expensive and not assured tenancy isn't something I can do

@Comedycook to a social housing property

Really? There must be a criteria and a list. They surely don't guarantee a property for absolutely anyone who wants one. Yes a single adult could apply but it's not an absolute guarantee is it?

I wasn’t suggesting you don’t work OP, I was responding to the comments of the other poster. My partner and I both have FT jobs and are having to move area as we are going to be unable to afford our current home when our fixed term mortgage ends. We would have no chance of any social housing at all.

WednesdaysChild50 · 26/10/2023 21:18

@itsmeagainagain very true, I found out the hard way! Downsized to a nicer area in same town. Not ASB but bullying and harassment from neighbour downstairs. Went on for a few years until OH (we don’t live together) had enough and had extremely strong words with him. I’m always worried that he will start it up again.

AhhSlippedOnMahBeansRitaaa · 26/10/2023 21:19

It’s great that you’re entitled to social housing where you are. I’m also in social housing and have always paid full rent myself.
That doesn’t explain why you need a two bed because you don’t, there is only one of you.
There are four of us in my two bed.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/10/2023 21:20

No, you won't qualify for a 2 bed house as you have no need for it and there will be plenty of people ahead of you that do.

Look at a mutual exchange, see if that's an option. Some housing associations put hard to let properties on zoopla or rightmove, but they're usually the 1 bed flats in the dodgy areas.

WednesdaysChild50 · 26/10/2023 21:22

@loandbeholdd you need to appreciate what you have to be honest with you OP

myrtleWilson · 26/10/2023 21:22

You will probably be able to bid on some 'immediate let' properties that are 2 beds but unfortunately they are likely to be in areas seen as undesirable. Which part of NE are you based in - northumberland/north of tyne/south of tyne? How far would you consider moving?

WednesdaysChild50 · 26/10/2023 21:24

Well that’s a load of crap for a start OP @loandbeholdd

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 26/10/2023 21:25

Honestly your chances of a single person with no dependents moving from a one bedroomed flat to a two bedroomed house are zero . You're gonna need to private rent .

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:26

@WednesdaysChild50 excuse me ?

I'm also NE and know at least 3 single friends who have 2 bedroom HA properties. Granted the most recent allocation was around four years back, but I don't think that much has changed. They are 30s and 40s, I'm not sure younger people would be allowed 2 bedrooms though.
Good luck Flowers

ladygindiva · 26/10/2023 21:28

I'm in Cornwall and live on a social housing estate and a fair few of my neighbours who rent are single and live in two bed properties. There's a shortage of one bedroom properties, in fact there are barely any.

randomfemthinker · 26/10/2023 21:30

OP, I hear you and wow at the replies over you just asking. Society is definitely rigged against single people without kids who aren't in a position to own but want to make life better for themselves, too. People sitting from their "ivory tower" judging relative to their own benefits. I don't have the answers OP over the unfair world or I do but am not in the power to change it. Good luck! Maybe as other posters threw out, there could be a house swap set up but research fully the swap works.

cocksstrideintheevening · 26/10/2023 21:33

I own my own home, have twins in a two bed. I'd love to go on the list and get a 3 bed but you know, real life not a fucking chance.

I don't think you should get a two bed op, perhaps a different one bed but you don't need a two bed.

Diversion · 26/10/2023 21:34

You are extremely unlikely to get a 2 bed property as a single person unless you have medical needs which mean that you require an overnight carer.

Lifeetc · 26/10/2023 21:34

I don't understand why you are entitled to a two bed house?
I don't have children, Ive never felt entitled to a HA property, I house shared, privately rented and brought ( twice if that matters)
Oh and when I bought my kitchen was old,my bathroom was old,the property needed doing up..... Guess what?! I paid to change it to something better.

Lenax · 26/10/2023 21:35

In 7 years, could you not have saved up a deposit to get your own house?

@Lifeetc it's bought not brought
Also I'm not entitled to anything
I don't feel entitled to anything
I would like to one day rent and pay full rent for a house rather than a flat
