loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 20:39

I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

Why do you need a second bedroom? A family in a two bed isn't any better off than you as they still have one bedroom (or less) per person. A two bed could house a family of four.

Huhuhuhu · 26/10/2023 21:37

@ByTheLightOfTheSilveryMoon@ladygindiva I do know single people who have been allocated 2 bed but that's because there weren't any one-beds. And they were actually homeless.
OP has a home already. She just doesn't like it. So very unlikely.

OP if you do get a 2-bed house it's probably because nobody else wants it. You may well be moving from the frying pan into the fire.

Pipistrellus · 26/10/2023 21:38

Could you private rent with a lodger in the second bedroom?

@loandbeholdd your comment about more druggies in flats is crap

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:39

I'm 8th of 263 this week
I'm keeping everything crossed
I'm hoping people in front may have already have others home by the time the viewings come around.
I don't think me wanting better than where I am now is a bad thing.
Obviously if someone was homeless etc -of course if they bid they should get property
As I'm in third band -I'm hoping as this goes off years on list -I get lucky

Well good luck to you then.
You may get lucky. You may not. None of us on this thread can tell you.
And as you want it so much you're not going to stop bidding on the say-so of internet strangers anyway - rightly so, it's your decision.

Just be careful that the reason you get a house isn't because it was so bad, everyone else rejected it.

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 26/10/2023 21:46

Op, if you are lucky enough to be awarded a 2 bed, this just means your current one bed is freed up for someone else.. I don't see the issue?

Alternatively your options are private renting or swapping your HA property. In your area it shouldn't be too difficult.

I think people are quick to think of a council property as some kind of lottery win, when in fact there are plenty of issues, living with ASB for the rest of your life being one.

I'll never be able to buy, can't save a deposit and even if I could I couldn't deal with the responsibility by myself (repairs, etc) im not hearing great things about shared ownership either. Just wish there was an option of secure rent.

1smallhamsterfoot · 26/10/2023 21:46

I got a 2bed HA flat as a single childless woman. It’s a lovely big new build.

In my area (north east ) everyone is entitled.
They don't discriminate because your single or unable to have children
I pay full rent on my flat

And that's the way it should be! Tendency is for people on here to think that those with kids should be top of the pile.
To make your way higher up the list you do need to justify - probably on health grounds if you can - why you need a change of area and preferably two bedrooms. I think the effect on your nental health would have to be evidenced by a GP at least. I don't think you will qualify for 2 bedrooms if you don't need someone to look after you some nights. Someone suggested ground floor with a garden and that might be nice 🙂
There are also schemes to allow you shared ownership in a property. Is it called the HOLD scheme in England? Where the government can fund so much of it. Good luck.

Gillypie23 · 26/10/2023 21:46

Unless you do a swap. You have zero chance.

Mammyloveswine · 26/10/2023 21:47

If you're in the north east and working full time you can definitely afford to rent privately.., I rented a two bed flat for £500 a month!!

Don't be so entitled!

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/10/2023 21:47

I think your best chance a swop. My next door neighbour is a single man in a 2 bedroom ground floor flat with a nice garden. Good luck

Pipistrellus · 26/10/2023 21:49

It means a bedroom will have then been lost. A bedroom could be housing for two people.

Well of course those with kids should be top of the pile. They can't all live in a shared room. A single person can. That's just common sense, I say that as someone who was single for a long time.

It's all relative. There are areas of the country where 3 bed houses sell for 100K or less. If nobody else wants to live there and there's plenty of council housing, why should people not get bigger houses?

OP wants a 'change of area' due to 'druggies in flats' but as PP have pointed out, there are nice flats. Only number of bedrooms count, not area when these things are being given out so 'mental health' isn't going to be a good enough excuse.

Comedycook · 26/10/2023 21:50

If you don't like where you are now...I don't understand why you aren't looking for a different one bed place? What are you going to do with a second bedroom anyway?

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:51

These properties are advertised and if you bid and come highest your offered it.
So if I do bid and get it ...it's because I'm higher than the other person.
So I'm not taking it away from another person.
They have properties weekly specifically for band 1 who are homeless -they never go on the website as they are allocated directly to those in need.
Loads of viewings I've been too only a few turn up
Just unfortunately they've been ahead of me on the list

@loandbeholdd
My absolute apologies 🤣
I'm using a small mobile phone (a none expensive one, cuz you know priorities)

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:52

@Comedycook as I've said I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a flat
I can't afford private rent and I don't want to risk renting private and them up and selling.

OP posts:
loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:54

@Lifeetc no problem I assumed you were one of those who didn't know the difference between the two words.
I'm typing my response on a phone with a sim only deal -you know -#priorities

OP there is nothing wrong with wanting a better place.
And viewings bidding go ahead it's your own time you're spending. If people needed it more then they should be ahead of you on the list.

It's just that. You asked. Are you likely to get one. And people say no. But every council is different. It's so opaque and really like a lottery sometimes.

Where I live people are waiting 2 years for a house so I doubt that swapping etc like this would be allowed. But some of DH relatives live in deprived areas of the NE and anyone who can moves away ASAP. Lots of housing there but no jobs or anything else.

loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 21:54

@Lifeetc do you have a spare £100,000 for me? As currently I don't have that much loose change in my pocket
