loandbeholdd · 26/10/2023 20:39

I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

Nobody seems to have noticed the obvious link on this thread. Saying that HA should only be for the most desperate and yet scratching their heads when the OP says a lot of her neighbours are druggies.
There is a hell of a lot of cognitive dissonance going on around this narrative. e,g ive seen posters on here saying that the minute a tenant earns above minimum wage they should buy or go into private rental and let someone who really needs it have the chance to rent their social home. Then the SAME posters moan that they wouldnt buy a property anywhere near a housing eatate because its too much like a ghetto When its what they were bloody insisting it should be 🙄

porridgeisbae · 27/10/2023 21:47

I suppose a Housing Association is different from the council housing list. It's a private company and often they do try and get a mixture of tenants, some of whom would be able to private rent etc.

Not everyone not earning is druggie/ghetto to be fair. I'm not able to work and got my place due to being made homeless, but wouldn't begin to know how to act ghetto or become a heroin addict or something. Smile But yes some of the HAs by me have a mixture of tenants, I think for the reason that otherwise it was thought the blocks were getting too intense.

1/3 of new builds have to go to housing associations. You can buy a £500,000 house and not know who who your neighbour is. We have a mixture of people around us.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 27/10/2023 22:00

A lot of new builds that house HA tenants are handing back the keys they can't afford the rent. They move themselves and their children back home to mum and dad.

In my area, people apply to the list for social housing and that includes both council and HA properties. It all goes through that system. People are allocated a priority band (based on their circumstances) and within each band, the priority is based on how long they've been in the band.

There is no way to skip this system and rent directly from a HA (and rightly so, that would be unfair).

newnamethanks · 27/10/2023 22:26

Zero. 2 bedrooms are for those who need them not for those who fancy a bit of extra dusting.

Ah ok. Are you sure about this? I have a feeling that, at least in my area, there's quite a list of different housing associations you can apply for separately if you like. I suppose it might depend on how large an area is, how many HAs they happen to have.

Yes, I'm sure Smile

It's because I'm in a upstairs flat
I hate it
Doesn't feel like home
I would love a house
Through housing association is the only way I can ever afford it

With how in demand social housing is now, you haven't really got a chance without DC. Sorry

You mean they are for those who have bred children but cannot provide housing of their own for? I see no reason why those with children should dominate HA and council lists. You can all rent privately or buy.
Seriously there is NO reason why a single tenant's circumstances cannot be considered alongside a family. This poster may go on to want a child with or without a partner living in.

Shittenshite · 28/10/2023 05:05

DaftQuestionForToday · 26/10/2023 20:53

Why should you?

private rent if you don't appreciate the HA property you have.
there aren't enough properties for families as it is. Families in B&B's or worse.

I've no idea why you feel it would be justified??

Why? Because the OP is entitled and selfish.

So many families struggling with no money in uninhabitable conditions and need a safe place with just enough room.

But no, OP thinks they should get a (rare) 2-bed house just because she wants one.

Cananyonehelpplease · 28/10/2023 05:09

Good luck op..it looks nice😀

TerfTalking · 28/10/2023 05:57

Good luck OP.

Im sure a lot of people saying you shouldn’t have a two bed don’t know Middlesbrough, and are completely ignorant of the high unemployment and how deprived some areas are. They find it hard to believe when living in London or the SE what other parts of the UK are like but wouldn’t pack up their belongings and move 300 miles away for your two bed house.

DS went to uni at Teesside and I’m fond of the place, and most of the people are particularly lovely.

fingers crossed for you 💐

loandbeholdd · 28/10/2023 07:47

@Shittenshite well if they had bid on the same property I did -they would of got it as if they were in urgent need they would be ahead of me
Clearly not

Not sure where you’re based but this is definitely the case in SW and SE London. HA no longer have an external housing register. Everything goes through the council’s bidding system each week and that includes any available HA properties

Unicorntearsofgin · 28/10/2023 09:38

OP hoping you get this place but if not I’d recommend looking at maisonette’s as they can be less desirable. You could probably get a one or two bed with a garden as well. Wishing you luck either way.

MrsAnon6 · 28/10/2023 09:42

As a single person it's extremely unlikely you'll get a 2 bedroom as these are given to tenants with children.

@loandbeholdd when I see posts like this one above it makes me even more hopeful that you get your offer. Please remember to screenshot your offer as well as take loads of photos of it once you've moved in. It will be worth it just to see all these nasty, spiteful mumsnetters spontaneously combust.

Lifeetc · 26/10/2023 22:27

£100,000 for a two bed house could be a reality for a lot of people who work full time.

This makes me actually gasp. We live in, I think, the third most expensive city in the country, and you'd be paying over £350,000 for something like that. And the wages aren't better - certainly not for ordinary jobs. It's madness!

MyCircumference · 28/10/2023 10:42

pretty sure it will be allocated to a couple or a single person, with a child

9outof10cats · 28/10/2023 10:52

There is a big difference between a 'want' and a 'need' and 'needs' should, of course, be prioritized.

However, if you are the only person bidding on it, then of course it should go to you.
