I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

@funbags3 she said they leave them now if they are clean
Nobody else turned up but she wasn't sure if anyone had rang to say the wanted it but couldn't attend
I'm assuming they hadn't
Oh I hope so
I'm hoping as the notification came through late nobody could make it

You're welcome. I don't know why people get so riled up about social housing. Jealousy, snobbishness, who knows?

I don’t think it’s either of those things, it’s people understand there is a huge shortage of social housing, many families in temp accommodation, many families bidding, there was what nearly 300 for the ops, so people think that a family who needs all bedrooms for their kids should have priority over someone who wants a spare room.

AInightingale · 27/10/2023 16:16

Surely the aim of social housing should be to let a decent chunk of it to people who pay rent, to enable the association/council to collect revenue to build more, or renovate the properties they have? Does it really matter if the OP has a spare room if she is paying thousands in rent a year? Many families pay nothing and the cost of housing them has to be met 100% by the state.

Everyone pays rent. Either via benefits or through employment or both. No one pays market value, the whole point of social housing is it is cheaper than private and for low income families/individuals who can’t afford to house themselves another way.

@loandbeholdd
Will be awesome if they leave them. One less thing to worry about.

porridgeisbae · 27/10/2023 16:34

Oooh promising OP. Please keep us updated.

lking12 · 27/10/2023 16:44

Good luck OP keep us updated!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 27/10/2023 16:45

Is it what you want? Nice area etc?

Good luck!

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 16:56

It's a really decent area
It's not in an estate either
I've just been on rightmove and two houses either side are bought houses so I'm assuming they would be decent neighbours
The house has a drive too
I'm hoping whatever these checks are I pass them
Il ring them on Monday as I'm assuming they are closed now

@loandbeholdd that's brilliant, it looks like it could actually be yours, moving is expensive so it's really helpful that they've left the good carpets etc and I bet you'll make that garden lovely - so much potential! Fingers crossed for you and I hope you'll be as happy in your new home (🤞) as I am in mine.

user1471538283 · 27/10/2023 17:27

I would assume that there isn't sufficient properties for you to get one depending on the area. A swap might work?

I was amazed that over 30 years ago my DM got a 3 bed house (that she hated) because she didn't stop keeping on and she wasn't housed.

LaurieStrode · 27/10/2023 17:38

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 15:57

The previous tenant had left all the carpets down and all the blinds up
I won't sleep now till Monday morning 🤣

Really happy for you! Fingers crossed for Monday!!

That garden has a lot of potential!

RiderOfTheBlue · 27/10/2023 17:55

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you @loandbeholdd

It's great to hear some good housing related news for once!

AInightingale · 27/10/2023 18:10

Good stuff - my social housing authority rips everything out and dumps it and it's scandalous waste. Even wooden flooring is removed. Blinds, curtain rails, towel rails, toilet roll holders! Next tenant has an outlay of a couple of thousand at least. I wonder why they do this?

MinnieL · 27/10/2023 18:37

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 07:49

@MinnieL hi no there's also a limit
A single person can only bid on a maximum of a 2 bed (1-3 person house )
So if a 2 bed (2-4 house ) came up I wouldn't be able to bid.

That’s so good! My cousin is the only person on her housing application (same authority as me) and can only bid on one bed properties. Interesting how it varies by area

MinnieL · 27/10/2023 18:39

Ooo lovely, you’ve been to view a property already? It looks promising and I hope you get it🤞🏾

Tumbleweed101 · 27/10/2023 18:44

Love your update, keeping my fingers crossed for you to get your forever home 🤞

housedramas · 27/10/2023 18:49

They'll just be pre-tenancy checks. So, affordability, checking for rent arrears, any ASB history (from yourself) - that kind of thing. Good luck! IME they wouldn't have you view it if they weren't going to let you have it! (Pending checks which sound like they'll be fine!).

Fallenangelofthenorth · 27/10/2023 18:58

Really pleased for you. That garden looks like it's got potential, and if it's that sunny in the afternoon at this time of year it looks (to me) to be south/west facing which will be lovely. Genuinely hope you get it.

TBOM · 27/10/2023 19:03

Fingers crossed for you OP!

MaidOfSteel · 27/10/2023 19:20

'..expecting us to get you....'

The OP is paying full rent for her flat and will probably be paying full rent when she finds a 2 bed property.

I'm sick to the back teeth of the snobby, middle class Tory attitude of many posters on this thread, looking down on social housing tenants, and even people who rent privately; thinking how dare these people actually want to better their lives.

I wish you all the best, OP. Our town often gets talked down; it has its rough parts, same as everywhere else. But it has lovely areas, too, and I sincerely hope you find somewhere you like.

MaidOfSteel · 27/10/2023 19:28

Comedycook · 27/10/2023 10:33

This mentality is obviously ingrained in you. I have met many people like you. People who assume that any problem they have is the responsibility of others to sort out. Hence we will never agree.

Bur the OP is paying full rent. Who is 'we' in this instance??

MaidOfSteel · 27/10/2023 19:32

Pipistrellus · 27/10/2023 10:43

With your mentality why should a woman who decided to have a child get a 2 bed house then?
SHE doesn't, there are two people requiring two bedrooms. THEY get a two bedroom house.

SHE chose up have a child she didn't have room for, though.

Comedycook · 27/10/2023 19:35

MaidOfSteel · 27/10/2023 19:32

Well if it cheers you up, there's load of women and children in overcrowded housing.
