Going on holiday tomorrow and I have covid ...

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 07:36

Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

@Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic my point is why should I loose out on a £3000 holiday because I realistically have a runny nose and scratchy throat
On the off chance someone might catch it
I mean where does it end

You shouldn't lose your holiday because of it.

Your first mistake was testing at all (most people don't now) and your second was admitting to it on here where the Covid Police so often still abound.

Just go on your lovely holiday and enjoy it. Wear a mask on the plane if you feel you must (I wouldn't). Stop engaging with the Covid Police now, it feeds their hysteria and they don't like to let that drop.

Roselilly36 · 24/10/2023 12:14

@navyplaint
I agree with you, completely. Pre Covid, they were nasty colds and flu bugs circulating every year, everyone just got on with life, people went to work, school etc.

I have multiple sclerosis, I don’t expect others to protect me.

Some people’s MH has been destroyed by fear of Covid, I accept that too.

But, it would be madness to lose your holiday, just go and enjoy it the sun will do you good.

Whataretheodds · 24/10/2023 12:16

It's frustrating as I always use my hand gel after touching cash points /handles etc
Wash my hands constantly

We have known for 3 years that this isn't how it is transmitted!

Wear a proper mask on the plane.

Why are people so much more worried about covid than other infectious diseases? The reaction is totally over the top, most people aren’t testing for covid, flu, chicken pox etc… being immune compromised is awful but unfortunately people will be ill and won’t (and shouldn’t have to) stay at home because of that. We decided to give away some theatre tickets last year because my elderly df was worried at the last minute about catching covid that was going round, it was on us to decide if we wanted to take the risk, not on everyone else to wear a mask or stay at home with mild symptoms. If we had gone and df had caught it we would have regretted going but we wouldn’t have accused the other audience members of killing him! More people died of flu last year.

stayathomegardener · 24/10/2023 12:24

Look regulations say you can now fly and travel with Covid.

In my opinion anyone getting on a flight needs to expect there will be covid positive individuals and the subsequent risks.
I say that as someone who still has long covid from March 20 and every infection since knocks me back further either with autoimmune or neurological issues.

On that basis I've chosen to never fly again, at 53 as an ex air-stewardess that's a pretty big decision but on balance better in my current circumstances.

Meadowfly · 24/10/2023 12:25

I also know several people who have stayed at home for the last few years to avoid covid, eventually caught it, been fine , and now relieved to be getting on with life again.

stayathomegardener · 24/10/2023 12:36

That said I'd hope you would mask up and take other precautions to protect others whilst traveling.

TheThingIsYeah · 24/10/2023 12:42

Ignore the Covid Police, OP. They probably put condoms on their vibrators, just to, you know, be safe.

Go on holiday and have a lovely time.

mummymayhem18 · 24/10/2023 12:47

The sheer selfishness of some people and their dispicable morals. Yes everyone shouldn't stay in for the rest of their lives to protect everyone else and life has to go on BUT the fact of the matter is she knows she has Covid. Most people have elderly relatives or know someone that may be more vulnerable for whatever reason.
She knows she has Covid.
And yes you should lose the money for your holiday if you were stupid enough to buy insurance that doesn't have a Covid component to it. I mean hello, we will forever have Covid around now but if you know you have it you be responsible and a decent human being. I mean god forbid someone lost their life but you crack on worrying about your £3000.

StampOnTheGround · 24/10/2023 12:48

I would still go, you feel fine, insurance won't pay out and you're lucky you even had a test because nobody I know tests any more, so you'd have no idea!

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 12:52

Thanks everyone for all your advice
I am going on holiday and hope my runny nose is playing ball tomorrow
The weather is looking nice so the sunshine should help

Two weeks ago a friend tested positive two days before due to fly to Italy - she contacted the travel agents and insurance company.

Insurance paid out in full, minus something like £200 excess, to both friend and her travelling companion, although he wasn't ill/positive.

Changing nature of Covid: Is it just a regular winter bug now? www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-66994137

"there is plenty of evidence to suggest the virus is on its way to becoming just another respiratory bug to contend with, alongside flu and others maybe lesser known, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinorvirus and adenovirus."

Go and enjoy your holiday

prescribingmum · 24/10/2023 12:58

mummymayhem18 · 24/10/2023 11:33

@prescribingmum I clearly did. Hence why I bought it.

You don't appear to understand your own policy. You are covered if you are ill or required to self-isolate. This is subject to medical certification and an official result. The UK government (and most other governments) do NOT require self-isolation if healthy and well therefore you would not get anything back for choosing not to travel.

I challenge you to find one policy that will cover you if you decide not to travel even though you do not feel unwell

BitofaStramash · 24/10/2023 13:00

@mummymayhem18

It's not 2020 anymore

Oliotya · 24/10/2023 13:30

Anyone saying they wouldn't go is flat out lying. People harp on all the time about how other people should be less selfish, but I bet the vast majority would come up with some exception for themselves. If you're that vulnerable, don't get an on aeroplane.

Flopsythebunny · 24/10/2023 13:40

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 24/10/2023 08:10

But there will be people on the plane who might not be so lucky to get it as just a cold! There may be several people on immunosuppressants for example. It’s just selfish to actively put others at risk.
but you do you as many others would on this thread obviously 🙄

This is why I can no longer travel, go to concerts, mix with groups of people etc. I haven't even been able to have the last 2 boosters because my neutrophils have been so low.
The cev have just been forgotten about it seems

The Covid clause on travel insurance now covers you if you have covid and ARE TOO ILL TO TRAVEL. Not just if you have covid. So you can't claim on your insurance on the basis of a positive test if you are otherwise, essentially, well. So no-one in their right mind is going to wave goodbye to £3k like that.

Exactly. No one would throw away a £3k holiday for a virus that is rarely even tested for anymore

Good decision

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 11:33

@mummymayhem18 then you protect yourself
If your vulnerable don't go anywhere you might come into contact with people if your so neurotic about covid
It's not mine or anybody else's job to change our life because your vulnerable
The law is the law and it states you can go about your normal activities

Nasty! I hope it pisses down and your hotel is infested with bed bugs!

HappiDaze · 24/10/2023 13:48

Wear a mask though on your journey there though

They don't. My sister having medical treatment hasn't been able to travel. And the same people tell her she needs to manage her fear and live her life while contributing to the exact things that mean it's too risky to do so.

But I'm sure that's exactly the same as "with a mild cold", hey?

HappiDaze · 24/10/2023 13:50

@Flopsythebunny if you go anywhere you'll be served or looked after by Drs and Nurses all with Covid and no longer isolating

It's up to you if you want to leave the house or not

HappiDaze · 24/10/2023 13:50

By served I mean in shops or restaurants etc
