Going on holiday tomorrow and I have covid ...

Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

You’re going to go anyway no matter what anybody says, so if you’re going to do that it would be kind of you to wear a mask on the plane. It won’t necessarily stop other people
from catching it but it will reduce the risk of it at least.

Your main issue once you’re there is that the rest of your family may come down with it after catching it from you and they may feel a lot more unwell with it than you have.

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 08:01

@QueSyrahSyrah funnily enough my dads had it twice (in his 80s ) and felt worse with the cold than actually what was covid

The problem here is that you've done a test. I wouldn't have. I would have assumed it was a cold and gone. I would probably have worn a mask on the plane.

But now you KNOW it's covid, the advice is to stay home. But it's not law. So now it's a moral dilemma.

I got covid last year while I was away. I called my insurance company and my airline and they told me to travel home as normal. I wore a mask. I took their advice as I would have been stuck in a foreign country but I was panicking about whether there'd be someone vulnerable sat near me.

Well it started late Saturday night /early Sunday so by Wednesday night I'm nearly passed the 5 days I'm contagious
So I'm hoping that and a mask and hand gel will be okay.

Please don't go. If you do, please wear a proper filter mask on the plane and in the airport. I'd be devastated if you ruined my holiday or gave me long covid so i can't care for my kid (as has happened to my friend).

Archymum · 24/10/2023 08:04

Agree that it sounds like you are planning to go regardless of what people say here. You may be looking for reassurance that it's fine to do this. Please wear a good mask on the plane. FFP3 (3M aura). You are likely to be infectious and very likely to share your COVID with several other people on the plane, thus ruining their £3000 holidays.

SlashBeef · 24/10/2023 08:04

I'd be going on my holiday, no question. I wouldn't have tested though so 🤷

honeypancake · 24/10/2023 08:04

If you feel pretty ok - go with a mask on. Most people don't even bother with tests anymore. Unfortunately this is how it is now. Half of people around on transport sneeze and cough, same at workplace. Stay home if you have fever or feel really bad as you don't want to have complications being on feet if it is really bad.

heretohelp241 · 24/10/2023 08:05

I have just had covid and felt horrendous BUT if I had spent that money on a holiday, and felt well enough to be on a plane, go abroad etc, I would 100% go. There is no requirement to isolate, people are just as likely to pick up COVID from the supermarket or any public transport - especially as lots of people aren't testing any more and just assume it is the flu/winter cold. Go and enjoy your holiday.

Quarantino · 24/10/2023 08:05

People just need to stop testing if they don’t want to know they have covid. My friends child is in hospital on oxygen following covid, many people are experiencing it as far worse than “just a cold”- v and d for days and aches, pains and temperatures

How can you say people shouldn't test when you've seen kids on oxygen?! The more people who test and take sensible precautions, the less it'll spread.

Whu · 24/10/2023 08:06

You are set on going.
I couldn’t go on a plane knowing I was positive for covid as I know it would spread through the plane and at the best ruin others holiday and at the worst make someone seriously ill abroad.
If you are going wear a N95 mask.

IceCreamSundaeCat · 24/10/2023 08:06

@navyplaint same here, 80yo parent had covid recently and had a headache and fatigue. They didn't pass it on to me. Others get it far worse of course.

Shitty timing but if you feel OK I'd take all the usual precautions like face mask etc and go.

Bouledeneige · 24/10/2023 08:06

My colleague just had it and had barely any symptoms. A very mild cold.

Tailfeather · 24/10/2023 08:07

Most people don't bother with tests now as we're at the point that we are living with it - like a cold. Some people freak at the word 'covid. Most don't and are continuing with their lives as normal.

Maddy70 · 24/10/2023 08:08

The advice is to carry on as normal if you feel well enough
I would wear a mask on the plane to reduce rhe risk to others but I would go

You only know you have it because you had a test. You would still travel with a cold

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 08:08

It's frustrating as I always use my hand gel after touching cash points /handles etc
Wash my hands constantly
Yet still caught it
It's playing out same as a cold for me
Scratchy sore throat
Yesterday tickly cough
Now today that's gone and my nose is running like a tap

But there will be people on the plane who might not be so lucky to get it as just a cold! There may be several people on immunosuppressants for example. It’s just selfish to actively put others at risk.
but you do you as many others would on this thread obviously 🙄

Archymum · 24/10/2023 08:11

OP, we are 3.5 years into the COVID pandemic. I hope by now you are aware that using hand gel and washing hands does not stop the spread of COVID. It's an airborne virus. What helps is ventilation and masks.

FrenchandSaunders · 24/10/2023 08:11

I’d go. I wouldn’t have tested but even if I did I’d still go if I felt well enough.

Wear a mask. Others on the plane are just as likely to catch it from others en route to the airport, at duty free, having lunch etc.

We also need to drop this assumption that one Infected person means the entire plane will inevitably catch it. I slept next to DH and didn't catch it when he had it. I shared a water bottle with my niece and didn’t catch it.

Penguin34 · 24/10/2023 08:13

We just arrived home from Tenerife.
Lady behind is coughing in the plane all the way.
My husband 2 days later felt like he had a bad cold, couldn't really sleep but that was it, was a bit knackered so had afternoon naps.
On last day he did a test because we passed a pharmacy and thought wonder if it's that? and he's had it the whole time,, we didn't know so carried on.
Oh and we GOT ON THE PLANE to come home!
However whenever I feel like I 'have a cold' I won't be testing

I went to an amazing hotel, very kid central, like one big nursery full of gems. There was hand foot and mouth, chicken pox and sickness bugs from what I heard but we all took out kids and life goes on and they all had a blast

Emmacb82 · 24/10/2023 08:13

A) Don’t bother testing if you are going to ignore the result.

B) Don’t start a thread on Mumsnet if you’re hoping that everyone will tell you to go!

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/10/2023 08:15

We also need to drop this assumption that one Infected person means the entire plane will inevitably catch it

Even in the height of contact tracing it was only the people sitting immediately beside someone on a plane who subsequently tested positive that were being contacted, due to how the ventilation on an aircraft works. My friend's husband got contact traced as the person directly behind him tested positive. His wife and daughter across the aisle did not get contacted.

(None of them caught it by the way. Same as my DH didn't when we were sleeping together - both senses of the word - while I had it).

dicedicebaby · 24/10/2023 08:16

Flipping heck, loads of people have colds/covid at the moment. Guaranteed even if you don't go on holiday, the plane will have dozens of other people aboard with one virus or another!

Wear a mask if it makes you feel better, pack some decongestants and paracetamol and get on with it!

Lagirl20 · 24/10/2023 08:17

Quarantino · 24/10/2023 08:03

Jesus stop being so dramatic. I’m assuming due to this fear of long covid that you don’t go anywhere at the moment? You’re housebound? You do realise that you can also get post-viral fatigue from lots of different illnesses. Get a grip.

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 08:17

@MrsElijahMikaelson1 there's no legal requirement now to isolate -who is going to loose £3,000 because they have a cold
