Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

What do you want to ‘get through to us?’ To be terrified of each ‘new strain’ like you are?

The only people who sound scared and in fear on this thread are you and @ttcat37

I go about my daily life without giving Covid a thought now.

Anyway. Pleased OP didn’t lose £3k and is feeling better (after a mere few days) and hope she has a wonderful holiday!

Don’t embarrass yourself. I am not terrified or remotely bothered but I do feel for those that haven’t caught the new strain yet and esp vulnerable people. I have no idea how the nhs will manage! I leave you guys to your ritual of denial. Ciao 🍸

Ah I shall await the news reports!

Still unclear what you are wanting from us all? To not leave the house? To be scared of this ‘new variant?’

Not sure where any of us are denying Covid? Just, you know, getting on with life and the myriad of viruses we have to content with…

‘Ritual of denial’

But that would be that it’s not circulating. We know it is

I thought you were leaving the thread earlier?!

The only person who’s embarrassed themselves is you. You genuinely don't have the faintest idea how clueless you are about interpreting data, the difference between raw data and opinions on data or how a virus mutates. You are unable to separate assumption from facts. You can’t even acknowledge that dying of Covid and dying with Covid are completely different things and treat statistics of both as the same outcome. When you don’t have a valid argument, you sink to personal insults on other posters.

Thank you - you’ve done everyone a favour by discrediting yourself

The NHS are telling staff not to test for work purpose. They are also requesting staff continue to work as normal unless they feel unwell. These are the staff you encounter at midwife appointments and the gp surgery. As this thread has shown, there are many who will have it with minimal symptoms and not realise and the chances are you will come into contact with them no matter what ‘your world’ of social contacts do.

No one is suggesting turning upto anything poorly, just that if you feel well enough, life continues as normal

A couple of posters seem to think their small sample of people who have had Covid with severe symptoms represent the general population. Newsflash - they don’t!! The official statistics clearly show there is significant asymptomatic spread - this is how it spread in the first place and we ended up using lockdowns to try limit it.

@prescribingmum - exactly! Only on MN do I hear from people who know so many others who have had severe covid.

sangriapeople · 26/10/2023 14:53

If you had mild flu and you were going on holiday 5 years ago would you have gone?

Would you have considered the possibility of killing a granny? Would you be concerned about infecting people?

Of course you can go.

There are some cruel replies on this thread. The lady is asking for some advice and what "you" would do! Why the nasty comments? Covid isn't "just a cold" for some people. It has killed millions, it has caused serious long term health issues in millions and flippant comments on here comparing the after effects to a cold are wrong! Yes, still live your life but have some compassion for the people around you, who can't afford to pick up this virus because of serious underlying issues. Think of the pressures in hospitals with NHS staff off sick and under resourced because of Flu and Covid. And lastly...Be KIND!

Piss off with be kind!

No one would sacrifice a 3 grand holiday for sniffles... no one.

This thread has got an air of 'you wouldn't know them, they go to a different school!' about it - anyone who disagrees with the hysterical are met with 'oh, you haven't had this brand spanking new deadly virus yet that incapacitates your eyeballs - good luck!' 🙄

Some posters seem to think viruses were invented in 2020 - people get ill, people die, it isn't a new concept. And no, this isn't from a place of fear, some of us thought the hysterics in 2020 were ridiculous too.

Look after your own health, do what you're comfortable with and leave others to do the same.

funbags3 · 26/10/2023 19:52

Why ask if you were planning on going anyway?

QueenBitch666 · 26/10/2023 19:53

I'd go. But I certainly wouldn't have tested before a plane journey 🙄

I suppose these posters are all lying and being dramatic. I am coming off this thread for good, because it’s idiotic and full of covid deniers and weirdos that seem to think covid is now just a cold?!

The Washington post sums it up nicely. Covid fatigue is a thing and yes you might be sick of it but it’s still here and making people seriously ill best case. Worse case killing thousands.

All that article states is that the new variant may be more infectious, and vaccines may not be as effective. And that thread is full of people who never actually tested positive, and who are oh so shocked to be poorly in the autumn, as if that never usually happens...Statistics are up to date and freely available if you ever feel like taking a break from anecdote

Blimey! That’s some flounce.

I must have missed something, because I haven’t come across any Covid deniers on this thread at all. We all know that COVID is still about, and it’s inevitable that people have different views about how we should be dealing with what is now just another part of life.

And insulting those whose perfectly reasonable views differ from your own diminishes rather than strengthens your arguments and potential to convince others. Such tactics may actually make posters who employ them look like enormous bellends.

@Oliotya precisely. The article also says that this new variant doesn’t make people any sicker either.

But they are saying they don't have Covid! There are so many viruses going around - many of which can make you feel more ill than Covid. That is our point. There are viruses, nasty colds, flues etc all in circulation - like there always has been. Yet some people hear the word Covid and freak out. I have had Covid 5 times and not had more than a sniffle. I ended up in hospital last year with a nasty virus and ended up with pneumonia but countless tests suggested it wasn't covid. COVID's around, but so are many other viruses. If you feel really I'll, stay at home, otherwise we have to crack on with life.

Inastatus · 26/10/2023 22:40

@GroanWoman and @Oliotya

Exactly - for those who haven’t read the article that @Lastchancechica has linked but erroneously summed up, in a nutshell the 2 key points are -

‘Experts say the rise of BA.2.86 is more of a subject for scientific scrutiny than public panic’

And ‘The latest variant does not appear to make people sicker than earlier iterations of the virus; antiviral treatments should still work against it’

Scientists have to modify the flu jab every year to protect against new variants, the same will happen for covid.

prescribingmum · 26/10/2023 22:42

And she’s back again with yet more unsubstantiated claims, random links and no real evidence.

The link posted says the following
The latest variant does not appear to make people sicker than earlier iterations of the virus; antiviral treatments should still work against it and tests should still detect it
Does not even vaguely resemble the picture you paint about a killer variant hospitalising all the young and healthy in sight 🙄

Keep going with your nonsensical links - as I said before, you’re doing a marvellous job of discrediting yourself

GroanWoman · 26/10/2023 23:58

Well, ever was it so (since ≈ March 2020, anyway) that there will be a new report. About a new variant/mutation. Which is twice as contagious as before...

We've been here before. More than once. And things never did get worse, did they?

Since the outset of the eruption of COVID, some of the reporting has been sensationalist to say the very least. And where it has been fair and balanced, it's been wildly misinterpreted and misconstrued.

cornflower21 · 27/10/2023 17:13

DiaNaranja · 26/10/2023 11:29

People working in healthcare and other people facing roles (supermarkets etc) are being told to carry on going to work even with a positive test if they feel well enough, so people are likely to catch it anywhere now, not just on a plane. I had to work alongside two people who tested positive last week, as they were told they wouldn't get paid if they didn't go in, and they didn't feel ill enough to stay home. It is just being treated like any other virus now, and like others have pointed out, no one would forfeit a £3000 holiday for a cold, unless said cold, had rendered them bedridden.

Exactly this.
Some people are still very naive...
